Friendly staff, great setting in the woods. Rooms were very clean and well furnished. Our son loved the pool. Good location for exploring surrounding sites: Caracol, Barton Cave, Pine Ridge, 1000 foot falls, etc.
The only negative is that compared to other options around, the food, albeit good, was very pricy. It would have about right in belizean dollars instead of USD.

My family stayed at Mariposa for the second half of our 9-day spring break vacation. The jungle setting is beautiful, and the staff made sure we had everything we needed, including lots of information on our outings. They were always there when we needed them, but never intrusive.

The cabanas are airy and comfortable. All the furniture and cabinetry was made by local artisans, as were the artwork on the walls and beautiful Guatemalan blankets on the beds. The beds are comfy, but be sure to retire early -- around dawn the jungle bugs and other critters start making an amazingly loud cacophony.

The food was delicious! After making our reservation, we received an emailed list of foods for each family member to indicate their likes and dislikes. We have some food issues -- one dairy sensitivity and two with gluten intolerance. The chef made great meals that suited both adults and kids (early teens) and that everyone could eat!

The location is near (in Belizean terms) many cool outings, including ATM cave and Caracol. The kids especially loved holding iguanas at the Iguana Conservation Project in San Ignacio. Tours can be arranged through Mariposa using tour companies they know and trust. It's also no problem to arrange your own tours, in which case the staff will confirm everything with your tour operator and go over all the details with you so you can dress and pack for your outing.

The kids enjoyed the swimming pool. We also had a fun hike on the grounds of Mariposa. There are interpretive signs for many of the jungle flora. We hiked up a big hill and, at the top, saw lots of stones and remains of stone walls -- we were actually hiking up an ancient pyramid!

We were sad to see that they've replaced some of the thatched roofs with fiberglass roofing. But, since there is not an insurer in the entire country that will insure thatched buildings, the change is understandable.

Nelmarie, Eric, the chef (whom we never met -- he was too busy cooking!), and the friendly and helpful servers are all part of our happy memories. We loved our stay at Mariposa and left for home feeling that Nelmarie is now part of our family!

We drove out to this little resort nestled in the jungle,, not knowing what to expect. Upon arrival we were met by Eric one of the staff and he you must be Barb and Ian we dont get many self drives here. You see this resort is in the jungle near a little town called San Antonio in Belize, away from the town and bright lights of anywhere. 6 Cabanas sit on the property, up its own path through a rich garden of local jungle plants orchids and bromeliads are everywhere. Each of the cabanas is laid out so that everyone gets their own view of the mountains or jungle off there own screened deck, I spent a lot of time updating the days events and cameras. Each cabana has its own hot water source so you dont run out. Local arts and colors decorate the interiors making they comfortable and inviting, all the windows are screened and we didnt have any problems with insects of any kind in our room which was the Orchid. The main lodge has a small gift shop, a TV room, a small sitting room for watching nature right out the window and of course the main dining area. There is a set menu, each day that you arrive to with a custom menu on each table with your names. The food was great the flavors local and fresh, one nice thing was the allergy requests, they can accommodate virtually anyone if they know in advance. There is a nice pool big enough for the number of guests and a pool side bar and louge area with huge hammocks that were just great to lay in with a cold drink.. It might a little off the beaten path but once you are at Mariposa you dont have to go far for adventure. With 20 of the top tourist adventures on their doorstep you can be on the first of everything because you dont have to travel an hour into the jungle to get here. you the smart traveller are already here. We were amazed at everything that was possible within a very short drive. The staff here can make virtually anything happen for you and or your family. the staff are friendly and the resort is well run and maintained will we go back .. you bet as a matter of fact that will be in 2015 when we go back for our 5th trip to this great country of Belize .

Room Tip: they all seemed to be about the same, they are all appointed very similarly we had the Orchid and it...

TripAdvisor did us marvelous- again! Mariposa came out #1 on our select list and here's why: small, catered-care, quiet, great staff, good food, beautifully tended grounds, comfy cabana. We spent 3 nights. ATM cave was arduous but fun (vine snake on trek in and foot blisters on trek out but hey...) Night canoe with Andy simply awesome- we saw many kinkajous, a beautiful owl as colorful as a tropical fish, a small fox. The Macal river was swift under a bowl of crystal stars. The not so great-- a pall of smoke over the entire country, concentrated in this agricultural valley- can U say "slash and burn"? Every visit to inland Belize we've encountered the smoke (we tend to travel in April & early May) and Never More- we'll stay on the cays. At least Mariposa is at an elevation where most of it blows out. Still. The road in will wrench the strongest back, shoulders and neck- it really beats you up traveling that road, which is sprayed down with petroleum to further insult the sinuses. Further-- no "rain forest" here, this is the piney uplands among agriculture. Dogs bark, rooster crow but no tropical birds call, no typical wall of jungle sounds at night. It is dry and dusty. Get down to a river to see any wildlife. If you want a true "jungle" experience you must leave the lodge area.

A Shout Out to Nell-Marie-- I would hire her in a minute, she is simply a buttoned-up, detail-and-people-oriented manager who is worth her weight in gold. And she comes complete with one heck of a chef-hubby :)

Room Tip: All are equivalent and situated in a semi-circle facing each other but plenty of space between, priv...

After arriving at the airport you will breeze through customs and someone will be waiting for you. We had Eric waiting for us and on route to the Lodge he was very informative about what we were seeing. The drive on paved road was 67 miles....the next 9 miles to the lodge is on rough road.
We were greeted by Nelmarie. This beautiful young lady took excellent care of us for the whole week. Our servers were Shamira, Eilda and Sharlene....sweethearts all !!! Melvin was tentative at the bar and makes an excellent drink. Esau is the Chef and takes great pride in making all meals, every meal was very good to excellent.
TRIPS
The ATM trip is a must !!! You'll leave at 8:00 am and return around 4:30 pm with a wide smile on your face.
My wife and I were the only ones to take the Village Culture Tour and may I suggest that you consider this tour. You will be very humbled by how these beautiful people live without electrical power and hot running water. They grow, raise and harvest all or much of what they consume.
Agusto was our guide and I must thank him for allowing us into his community to experience an amazing tour. I am not going to tell you too much about it....an experience you will never forget.
We had a great time !!!
Thank You Sharyn for hiring these beautiful people who pampered one and all !!!

My wife and I spent five nights at the Mariposa resort with another couple. The resort staff took excellent care of us with personalized service. The meals were exceptional and the staff pampered us. In one case a member of our party dropped their wallet in the parking area. A staff member found it in the dark and returned it to the owner with all the money intact. This incident highlighted the high integrity demonstrated by all their staff members.

The resort also provided us with a guide and vehical. He took us to several archeological sites and other local attractions. He was very knowledgeable and this sgnificantly enhanced our adventures as well as gave us an escort for local and Guatemala trips. We would highly recommend this service for anyone staying at the resort and travelling in the area. There is is so much more to learn from their local guides than you can gather on your own. It is also wothwhile considering their assistance with transport over the local logging roads that afford access to many sites and activities.

Jim and Sharyn took a personal interest in our comfort and the quality of our stay. They also worked wonders with their staff in arranging trips and outings on short notice. They were warm, welcoming and engaged in making our stay the best it could be.

By now you may notice that we don't have any negative critism. The accommodations were comfortable, clean and well appointed. The service was exceptional and personilzed. We visited several places in Belize and the Mariposa turned out to the highlight of our trip. It was most memorable.

If you are going to Beluze you MUST stay at the Mariposa!

Room Tip: All the rooms are equivalent and private since they are individual cabins.

Here are SOME of the problems I experienced at the Mariposa Jungle Lodge:

-Expensive for what it is.
-Falsely advertised the proximity to the city. Driving time to San Ignacio was something like 45 minutes to an hour for something that was mileage wise supposedly close. Therefore, we had to use their car service often and spend a lot to get into the city.
-The beds had stains on their sheets, which were either from bugs or other guests.
-There were stains all over the comforter, similarly from bugs or other guests.
-There were holes in the bed sheets.
-Stains all over the towels.
-Mosquito net was not thoroughly cleaned before our arrival, therefore there were dead bugs atop the bed.
-The door for the rooms was not built properly, so there is a gap between the door and the floor. This let in random bugs and other creatures. I was told that several guests had tarantulas, lizards, etc. visit them in their rooms. I understand I am staying in the "jungle", but it shouldn't travel with me into bed.
-Mosquitos and gnats all attracted to the bathroom. You can't take a nice normal shower without there being bugs.
-They use FIVE GENERATORS! These generators were broken for four of the five days of our stay. Because this happened during Christmas, they couldn't get anyone to fix the problem, therefore we often had no light, or hot water, or had to wait for our meals.
-Internet only works in the common area by the kitchen, but the common area computer did not function, so you could not check your email unless you bring your own computer.
-Meals are "tailored" to your preferences, but if you stay for more than a few days the meals are redundant and lifeless. I'm pretty sure I got sick from eating some of their quesedillas for one lunch and had to miss one of our excursions. The chicken they cooked one night was super tough to eat.
-The pool picture they post is super deceptive, as it is tiny and is cluttered with bugs and leaves.
-There are three or more dogs on the site. If you are not an animal lover you will not enjoy the dogs roaming around the area, especially the kitchen. ick!
-The owner of the property is kind of scary. She wasn't super nice when we checked into our rooms.
-They also did not warn us that they were moving us from one room to the next, so when we got back from our excursion they had already moved our stuff without our consent.

Despite all of the bad I mentioned above, there was some good:

-They were able to do our laundry!
-They acquired some swim shoes for me at the last minute.
-Claim they will remove any insects or animals from your room if you have any.
-Rooms are nicely ventilated if you keep your windows open and ceiling fan on.
-Fly swatter is included with the room. You will certainly need it!
-They have a random CD playing every night during dinner. The mix included Michael Bolton covers of let's get it on and sexual healing! HIGHLIGHT OF THE STAY!
-They did make some picky New Yorkers kids hamburgers on demand, because the New Yorkers were being obnoxious!
-They will try to reschedule excursions that you could not make.
-We learned about the CHICKEN POOP game!
