“Great comfort, super personal assistance, wonderful nature!”
Reviewed 11 January 2011

My boyfriend and I spent a few days at Mariposa, from December 27th to January 1. We had the best time, a deep nature and Maya experience! The owner, Sharyn, had always been extremely efficient, accommodating and caring with us. She organized all the activities we had there and she took care of our next stop accommodation, in San Pedro, on the Ambergris Caye.
We enjoyed very much all the excursions in Cayo, like zip lining and caving, and in Guatemala, Tikal. Sharyn’s stuff guides are very nice and prepared.
I loved food at Mariposa, exquisite local specials and a lot of fruits and vegetables, tasty and healthy!
Sharyn made sure we have every day what was suitable for us and she was very accommodating in making possible changes. I personally love plantains (a green banana) and she made a “special sandwich” as a snack for me, with that and peanut butter, delish!
The cabanas are comfortable, well-groomed and charming. No noises, just jungle mysterious sounds.
In the Mariposa property there is also a bird watching tower, where sometimes Sharyn makes great sunset dinner parties. We had been the first people sleeping the night over there with sleeping bags…the New Years Eve night! So special, listening at the jungle night sounds and waking up with birds singing and flying over our heads. I will never forget that experience!!

Since my grandson(11) wished to show me what he had learned about the Maya, I chose Belize for our special one on one trip. Never having been to Belize, I was more than delighted with the help in creating a kid friendly plan which then had all kinds of flexibility. Ian and a local boy became "friends" so market trip and night canoeing became a kid friendly trip. Cave tubing, zip line, and a side trip to Tikal. were tops with Ian. Having been there in June, I am envious that there will be a pool soon to complete each days adventure. It was hot in June, but school demanded that we be there then. Also Sharyn planned for us to get to Caye Caulker, so really, it was most relaxing for Bessi (me). Damien and his brother and Nelmarie became friends. Oh yes the bird watching/picnic tower . Super!!

Our stay at Mariposa was short- 2 nights- but we felt right at home the whole time. Sharyn, the owner, is very accommodating and her whole staff is wonderful. The meals were good and tailored specifically to our needs. The food and drinks were very reasonably priced and the grounds are beautiful.

We did one day trip to the ruins at Caracol arranged through Sharyn and led by her staff. It was awesome and the day trips through Mariposa are cheaper than anywhere else you’ll find in the area.

Funny thing is, we thought we were staying somewhere rustic when we booked Mariposa. While you are definitely surrounded by nature in a very secluded place with the sounds of nature everywhere, the cabanas are so nice and the beds were so comfortable. It's luxury meets nature.

The roads out to Mariposa are very rough but doable and part of the adventure. Make sure you are in an SUV though.

Our recommendation- stay at Mariposa and stay for at least 4 days- it is well worth the trip. All-in-all we could not have been happier!

We called Mariposa when we had an unexpected gap in our itinerary while in Belize. Based on the other trip advisor reviews, we called and spoke with Sharyn and Mariposa and decided to stay there for a few nights. We were not disappointed with our choice.

Cabanas- We loved our room- Puma. It was clean and comfortable and just what we were looking for after roughing it for a bit elsewhere in Belize. It had two beds, complete with mosquito nets. I have to say I did not believe Sharyn when she said there were not many insets and mosquitos, but she was right. At night, even with the light on, we never had a mosquito in our room. The room also had a screened in area with chairs and a hammock. I loved this. It was great to read, bug free, while enjoying the view!

Food- The lodge also has a meal plan that one can purchase. We did buy the lunch and dinner option and again were not disappointed. Nelmarie, Issa and Selma all do a fantastic job in the kitchen creating unique meals, Belizean and international, that are tasty and fun. I also really enjoyed the breakfasts- especially anything that had Issa's refried beans that had garlic and onions in them. Best breakfast burrito that I have ever had.

Staff- All the staff is wonderful. In addition to the ones mentioned above, there is Damian and Augusto who are the drivers and guides for many of the excursions. I went zip lining at Calico Jacks (short distance away) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Both are intelligent in regard to the nature surrounding the lodge and excellent drivers on what are not the best roads!! We also did cave tubing on the way in from the airport- which we enjoyed quite a bit.

Overall, we had a great trip and would recommend Mariposa to anyone that would like to stay in the jungle- without sacrificing comfort and beauty- while being fed great food and surrounded by wonderful people

After a part of our trip fell through, we went looking for a new place to settle, and Mariposa sounded like a great option. We emailed Sharyn, the owner, and she returned our correspondence immediately to let us know there was room for us the very next day. We stayed a total of 4 wonderful nights in the wonderful lodge in the middle of the jungle, and enjoyed amazing homemade breakfasts and dinners that were tailored to our specific interests and food preferences. Sharyn and the staff did a wonderful job helping me eat amazing and healthy meals despite my food restrictions, and they even let me watch their fabulous cook Selma make freshly-made tortillas as well as informing me how to make the traditional belizian staples we ate later that evening. While the lodge is fairly far from attractions, the staff is more than happy to help you with transportation. The cabanas are incredibly clean and the large beds come equipped with mosquito nets, though there are surprisingly few bugs where they are in the jungle. The price is right in the middle between bare-bones and opulent, but delivers fabulous ammenities with beautiful bathrooms, a cute sitting room, and a comfortable lodge with internet, lots of books to read, and a larger TV than in my own home! Also lots of options for affordable sights and tours. They were putting in a pool when we were there that should be ready by the new year. If you want a get-a-way with beautiful scenery, this is the place!

This review is long overdue. Last March my friend and I stayed at Mariposa Jungle Lodge and had an unbelievable experience. We were expecting to stay in a rustic hut but we were surprised by the cabanas. On the outside, they blended into the jungle environment with tasiste palm (a term I learned there) exterior and thatched roof. But the inside was the real surprise. We’re young and had never stayed in a luxury hotel. The size of the room, with king size canopy bed and separate sitting area, seemed huge. And that was in addition to a spacious screened-in porch with our own hammock and chairs, overlooking the jungle. The bathroom was large, tiled and modern, and even had a beautiful hardwood bench to sit on or whatever.

The hostess, Sharyn, and her staff were lots of fun and gave us good advice about what to do. We were able see and learn so much in our 5 days there. Caracol is a must-see Mayan ruin. Big Rock Falls is an awesome place to swim in the natural pools of the falls. We had a picnic lunch there when we arrived by horseback and liked it so much we returned another afternoon. ATM is incredible. We loved the hike, crossing a river a few times, climbing rocks to enter the cave, swimming and wading among awesome stalagtites and mites, and finally reaching the treasures hidden in this former ceremonial cave. Another day we tubed down the river and, thanks to the guide, spotted several camouflaged iguanas in the trees and lots of tropical birds. Mariposa has a fantastic birdwatch tower built in the jungle. We used it in the daytime to read, watch for birds, drink beer, and hang out. At night, we had a gourmet BBQ under the stars. (This was not your typical hot dog/hamburger BBQ. It was spiced and skewered shrimp, chicken and pork tenderloin, along with ceviche, gazpacho and a great hot dessert.)

Sharyn helped find us bargain accommodations on Caye Caulker and a great condo deal in San Pedro, so we were able to experience three different places. On the way from the Lodge to the water taxi, our usual Mariposa guide, Damian, took us to the Belize Zoo, which we enjoyed more than we expected. The water taxi was cheap and fun.

Overall, our first jungle experience was exciting and unforgettable and we thank Sharyn and the Mariposa Jungle Lodge staff for making it possible. Obviously, we highly recommend staying there.

My husband and I spent six lovely days at Mariposa Lodge in August 2010. The place is everything the website promises and more. The owner was very helpful and communicative before we arrived and arranged a series of wonderful excursions for us helping us maximize our limited time. Her staff (she was not on-property during our stay) could not have been more gracious, accommodating or helpful. Our cabana was everything it should be and a wonderful place to come home to after a long day of caving or other excursions. And the meals were uniformly delicious and served in grand style. The sunset meal on the observation tower was a special treat!
Damien our Mariposa guide was unfailingly charming, informative and patient with us. Thanks to him we learned a great deal about the history, flora and fauna of not only the area around Mariposa but also of Belize. And we really enjoyed his informative tour of Caracol and the Belize Zoo. The guides provided for our excursions to the ATM and Crystal Caves and for our trip to Tikal (Guatemala) were also amazing. We highly recommend those trips to anyone visiting Belize. And, of course, our horseback riding and ziplining day (just down the road from Mariposa) were a blast as well.
In sum, if you’re looking for a warm atmosphere, good food, and lovely comfortable accommodations, Mariposa is the place for you!
