“3 night stay”
Reviewed 11 April 2014

If you go here with a voucher there is nothing to complain about but would not pay full price.
Whole place needs updating just some stain on the doors of the stable rooms would make such a difference as it looks very tatty when you arrive.
The bathroom was clean with nice towels and plenty of hot water. The sheets etc were good although we did not like the old fashioned blanket.
A three course evening meal was included and this was delicious.
Breakfast was just o..k. Not very hot and the cold plates did not help also the fruit juices should be in glass jugs so you can see what they are.
As this place does not seem to be very busy why don,t they do bar meals so people do not go elsewhere (as we did). When staying 3 nights or more you do not want to eat and pay for a 3 course meal each evening.

Room Tip: Room 7 was nice as it had 2 windows

Stayed at the Blazing Donkey with a 1 night dinner bed & breakfast offer which was really good value and included a great 3 course dinner which was excellent. Couldn't fault the food and service. The bar/restaurant area was really nice and cozy.

The stable room was fine but needed an update and paint particularly the entrance door which was in need of a good lick of 'stain'. Breakfast was not particularly great - the scrambled egg was pretty awful.

Whilst it was an ok hotel, I wouldn't want to pay the full price unless it was updated.

I could not fault our bedroom which overlooked fields. The evening meal which was included in the price was delicious. There were two negative things of note. One was the lack of any visible person in charge. Nobody was around to welcome us or take in our keys at the end of our stay. We handed them into the waiter. The second thing was the breakfast on both days was cold. It was pre-cooked and put into heated containers. The price for two nights plus evening meal was very good so I was not expecting a 4 star hotel.

Not sure where to start with this place!!!?? I think maybe the word "arrogance" springs to mind! Its a very standard venue! I think the other reviews on this site say it all!!!! for instance "Our break began with a greeting from a totally disinterested man" If this was the same man we dealt with then there is only one word from him!!!!! RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RUDE!!!!!!!!!!
Very unhappy!!! I will never return to this venue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had a one night dinner bed and breakfast deal for only £69 - for both of us! You could not fault the food or service, the only thing we needed complain about was that we were cold (along with others in the restaurant). Despite several log fires being in the building when we asked for them to be lit we were told there was no wood - even though we had spotted a pile of it outside.
The rooms were comfortable and adequate although a little outdated with blankets and quilted bedspreads.
All in all, great value for money, but with the cold the evening lacked warmth and atmosphere.
My 4 stars are really given for the food and value.

Room Tip: Car needed - in the middle of the country so nowhere else to go. Having said that, great cycling ar...

We've visited this hotel twice before and the first time in 2012 was fantastic, however, it has gone down hill since then. Presumably Emily has left too but other changes have been made that have been a mistake. Sadly we will not be returning.

The break began with a "greeting" from a totally disinterested man. Room 4 had a view that consisted of a Laurel hedge about a metre from the window. Tried to get a different room but the one offered in the main building (room 20) was barely big enough to fit the double bed in and should not be being offered as a room. The evening meal was also disappointing the white wine was warm and requests for ice for the bucket took too long to arrive. My starter was ok but there wasn't enough toast to go with the parfait my wife had ordered (although I accept that this is a common problem). The vegetables with the main course were very hard, the lamb was acceptable but I've had much better. They didn't have the local cheese board selection, didn't offer coffees and didn't have any sambucca or amaretto. And then assumed the change was a tip. I later discovered that the rather limited menu had been in place for all of February and March and was now being continued into April (so was even more relieved that we hadn't decided to book a second night).
The double bed consisted of two single mattresses that were of different thicknesses resulting in a small but noticeable physical barrier.
Breakfast was completely self service, poorly replenished and the cooked breakfast was cold as the storage receptacles had nothing to keep them warm. You had to guess what the juices were (made harder by putting one in a brown jug so you couldn't see what colour it was).
The disinterested man took the key back barely acknowledging my presence, didn't bother to confirm that there was nothing to pay, didn't ask whether we had enjoyed our stay although that might have been because he already knew the answer.
Fortunately we had booked this through one of the voucher deals that are commonly available so hadn't paid the full price but had to smile at the irony that the deals are intended to encourage people to book again.
If you haven't booked don't, if you have cancel if you can but if you can't keep your expectations low and good luck.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 1 to 6 and 20 to 22

We had a one night stay on a dinner bed and breakfast voucher deal. We were highly delighted as soon as we entered the hotel, a type of barn conversion which had some age. Dinner was excellent with an inventive/innovative menu and we were looked after by a very pleasant, cheerful waitress. The accommodation is built to resemble a stable block around a square alongside the main building. Very novel and quality good, much like a motel but better with our car parked outside our room. Buffet breakfast had everything one could want in the way of hot food and was equally matched by the selection of juices, cereals, cakes and pastries. The only suggestion I would make is 'hot plates please' !
Looking forward to another stay. WELL DONE.
