“TREYN holiday on Lake Garda”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

The hotel was chosen by TREYN as their centre for our 8 day package tour. The hotel is nicely situated within the small town of Maderno and only a few minutes walk to the lake-side ferry booking office. The hotel itself is a grand old lady who is probably past her best. The staff were very friendly, drinks reasonable priced, although it is far cheaper to walk 5 minutes to the local supermarket too stock up on water. A nice swimming pool and pleasant gardens, with friendly lizards and geckos to keep you amused. Rooms are adequate and you take pot luck as to whether there is a bath or just a shower. Beds are quite hard and my wife had to put the blanket under the bottom sheet for extra padding. Tea/coffee facilities would have been nice.

Our package holiday food was very disappointing, "meat and one veg". Members needing gluten free options were catered for, although erratically.

Not the hotel's fault, but we found that Maderno itself is a bit of a backwater and far more difficult to get about on the ferries than we have experienced further north on the lake on a previous holiday. For example only 2 visits from the "rapid" ferry (early morning and late afternoon) in both directions. The ferries are now getting quite expensive also.

Sept 2013 Just returned from a two week stay at Hotel Maderno. What a great place to stay, super staff, good food and great surroundings. Two minute walk to Lake Garda where the boats whisk you around the lake and enables you to visit all the towns in the area. Maderno being centrally placed on the lake makes visiting both ends of the lake much easier The hotel is a small family run establishment and you cannot fault the service, nothing is to much trouble The guests are a mix of travellers from a number of countries e.g Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Italy & UK. It was a joy to eat the dinner in the beautiful dinning room with full waitress service. We even had breakfast ready for us at 6am before we left. We really enjoyed our stay & look forward to returning. A very beautiful area.

I have just returned from a vacation in Italy where I stayed at hotel Maderno. The hotel and staff were fantastic. Every member of staff I met on the trip was extremely helpful and made me feel at home. The food was very nice and the breakfast offered a little more than the usual continental spread expected in Italy, with eggs, cheese, meats and fresh water melon offered in addition to the more commonly found cuisine. The hotel is directly opposite the promenade and the fry stops 2 minutes from the hotel, making it perfect for getting around. I stayed in a single room as I was travelling by myself. I did not have a great view from my window as my room backed onto a building, however this did not bother me much as I was not in my room very often. There is air conditioning in the rooms and a large lounge area. There are two aspects that let this hotel down. The first is the outside lounging area: The sun beds need replacing as do the cushions and while the pool itself is clean, it could serve some refurbishment. Nevertheless it stands on beautiful grounds, surrounded by flowers and trees. the second is the price of drinks in the restaurant. I do not drink alcohol and only drank water with my meal, yet water was sold at 4 euros per bottle which I found a little steep.

We have just returned from a week in this hotel in Maderno. The hotel is extremely clean and the food is, on the whole, excellent. Breakfasts are buffet/continental style with a good range of drinks, bread/croissants,cheese/ham and watermelon! The evening meals were really nice with an appetiser, pasta, main course and cheese or dessert.
We cannot express how friendly and helpful the waitresses (and other staff) were, making sure that everything was ok and we also had an early homeward flight and they ensured breakfast was ready for us.
The rooms are clean, basic and ours overlooked the main road which is noisy but we had air conditioning so the windows were closed most of the time and it didn't really worry us. Rooms were ensuite with a shower, a TV and safe.
It is also ideally located for ferries and buses. The pool is a decent size but does need some attention and they definitely need new covers for the sun loungers.
The town has a few bars/restaurants along the main road opposite the lake but you really do get used to the road and the traffic generally moves slowly enough for it not to be a problem. The beaches are pebbly and there are snack bars further along towards Toscalano. We visited many other villages - Salo, Malcesine, Gardonne, Sirmione, using the ferries which although expensive are a lovely way of seeing many other towns. Don't take any notice of the bus timetables!!
I was a bit trepidatious about this hotel but the hotel and staff were just fine and we really enjoyed our stay - the weather did help though!!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have balconies but are over the main road, rooms at the back overlook the town/mo...

We have just returned after a weeks holiday at the Hotel Maderno. The hotel is in an ideal location, a couple of minutes walk to the ferries. We received a warm welcome on arrival, not only from the staff but also from the weather - 38 degrees!! The hotel was clean and very comfortable, set in shaded gardens in which to relax. It was quiet and everything was in walking distance (e.g. shops/restaurants). We opted for half board and the food was excellent and varied. Our waitress was delightful. Luciano, was so helpful and went above and beyond his duties, getting us breakfast at 5.30am due to our early pick up on the day of our return and waited up late for us when we had been on a trip which returned after midnight.

We would really recommend this hotel and would like to thank all the staff for their friendliness and attentiveness. We would go back tomorrow!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony.

If you are looking for a sleek, swish hotel with modern facilities, then keep on searching as Hotel Maderno doesn't offer this. Thank goodness! There are many hotels offering that the world over. What Hotel Maderno does offer is a warm welcome, fantastic service from every member of staff who couldn't do enough to make our stay pleasant and a taste of real Italy. You will also get an insight into a bygone age when Churchill, Mussolini and other heads of states visited the hotel to dine and discuss ways to end the war. The hotel is family run by father Pietre Luigi and son who are incredibly proud of their hotel and did all they could to make your stay special. Although it is past its former glory in many ways and the rooms are basic, this can be forgiven by the elegance and Edwardian style throughout the hotel and the service in the dining room. We booked half board for the first time ever and didn't regret it as the food was delicious, on the whole - although we did chuckle at some of the meal translations and still wonder which of us at 'smooth hound' for dinner! Some people will always find things to moan about but we embraced the experience for what it was and loved it. We never got away from the feeling we had travelled back in time or were accidentally starring in an episode of Poirot or Miss Marple!
The only negative point was that the bed was harder than we normally like but it was a small price to pay for such a great experience.

Maderno itself is set in a beautiful, sweeping bay and has narrow, winding streets to explore behind the restaurants. However, it doesn't have the drama of Riva, Sirmione or Malcesine so doesn't attract as many tourists. This was a blessing as Maderno was a peaceful oasis to return to after a day exploring the other lakeside towns. It has a handful of restaurants within a minute of the hotel and a long promenade dotted with shady, water side bars to escape the sun and sample a long, cold drink. We had lots of fun people watching as we 'promenaded' each night with the locals. It was a truly fabulous holiday and we will definitely return!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony if possible

The Hotel Maderno should not be rated 4 star and anyone who thinks it is should visit a real 4 star hotel and there are some excellent ones nearby........
Yes, the Hotel is in a prime position and has beautiful grounds and a clean swimming pool and the resturant staff are attentive but thats where it ends sadly.
The hotel has not been recently renovated as suggested by Thomson, it is dated and to be frank shabby. The rooms are basic and there are no special touches like soft towels or toilettires ( we had three small containers of shampoo - no soap or shower gel !!) and the bedding is old.
The breakfast is very poor with coffee served in thermos flasks which is stewed (such a shame for a country of coffee drinkers) and there was a limited selection of cereals, yoghurts, pastries and toast. The evening meals also leave a lot to be desired - we ate in the Hotel twice and that was enough we opted to go to the excellent local cafes and resturants where we got a real taste of Italy.
Suggest that you think carefully before booking to stay at the Hotel Maderno and read all the reviews dont go there if you are used to quality.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else......
