“Pleasant surprise after reading reviews”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2012

If you are looking for reasonably cheap, basic accomodation near Gare du Nord this place is ideal. Never had any apprehensions about walking around the local area in the small hours, plenty dirt cheap cafes/bars and fast food outlets nearby. Perhaps not so good for a romantic trip, but, it served our purposes well for somewhere to crash after a day on the beer!

After booking, we glanced the reviews from trip advisor and prepared for the worst. As we entered Brussels via the North station, we noticed that we were going to get off in an area that resembled Amsterdam's red-light district, only a lot less touristy...

The hotel itself was okay, the staff seems to have forgotten how to smile, but that was ok. The room was heated from an unknown source and you have no way to regulate the temperature. The only solution is to open your window to the street and endure the downtown noises.

The breakfast was average.

The first impression of the nearby neighborhood of the hotel was quite unsafe and once arrived at the hotel, the room wasn't clean enough and smelt tobacco in a non-smoke room, it hasn't enough ventilation at the room, really noisy with thin walls so you could hear other rooms close my room. I had to ask for a change room but still I didn't feel comfortable and the breakfeast was quite poor for what I paid. I don't really recomend you this hotel although it is a 2*, with this category I found better hotels.

Close to the North Train Station, Hotel Bentley is too expensive for what it offers. Really small rooms and not clean enough, old and weird, this hotel would be a decent choice for a 1-night stopover

My office booked this hotel for me, so I had to stay here (even after reading the reviews). OK so I think it was not as bad as some of the reviews, but it was not good at all.

Very noisy - I could hear people in at least 3 rooms on my floor, the walls are very very thin. I could hear trams and traffic on the cobblestone street outside, there was no double glazing. Also police sirens. I did not sleep at all.

Did not feel safe - the door to my room was very thin, i think it could easily have been pushed in. I could hear groups of men talking in the other rooms, so I did not feel safe (female travelling alone).

Location - DO NOT WALK AT NIGHT. The trip from Gare du Nord to the hotel was a nightmare, the taxi brought me through small streets in the red-light district. I did not feel safe even in a taxi.

Wireless internet did not work. Hot water was not hot for very long. I did not have breakfast. The lift was good though.

REYHAN C (TURKEY)

VERY VERY BAD
The hotel as others say was very very bad in all aspects. I was in Bruseels for a meeting and have to stay two nights in this hotel.I recommend name for this Hotel."The nightmare of Brussels" The rooms were overpriced for the condition of the hotel. The staff was very very rude.Everything in the hotel is very dirty. I thing it must be closed.I have never stayed such a bad, dirty ,bad smelling, bad managed hotel before.NEVER STAY HERE.

There was a conference taking place when I needed a room for a business trip and this was the only hotel with a vacancy - the last available room in Brussels for that night (and not for good reason). I don't know the star rating in Brussels but I would be surprised if it has any stars unless the allocation system is a generous one. It qualifies as a 'hotel' but no more than that.

No one at reception on arrival - the receptionist had gone out. Two persons on reception duty on departure (neither spoke English) but credit card check out system failure for three consecutive guests - they wanted to take me to the bank to withdraw cash! The lift and plumbing are old. The room was spartan - it's a place to crash for the night but best avoided if you have an alternative. There is no restaurant and the breakfast room is unimaginative with a limited buffet selection. I noticed the manager smoking as he passed through the dining area (where a small wall-mounted TV plays Greek stations continually), and into the kitchenette where food is prepared.

If I could not find another hotel again next time, I would try changing my travel dates before staying here again. It's not that it's dirty or unhygienic and it's fine once you've climbed into bed and turned off the light; it's just not a pleasant experience. I would score it 0/5 but the TripAdvisor site does not permit a zero score.

  • Liked — It was the only room available in Brussels. Free (but unsecured) WiFi access to internet
  • Disliked — Generally a low standard of service and facilities.
