Wild Coast Sun Hotel

We had a weekend break and travelled as parents with a 6 and 3 year old. All excited to see the new water slides, we were quite disappointed that most of the slides were of the extreme variety and intended for adults only, with kids less than 1.2m not allowed, not even if accompanied by an adult.

Back at the hotel, we stayed in a garden facing family room. This room type is about R 200 cheaper than the equivalent sea facing one. The garden view is drab and depressing to say the least. No landscaper has been to this "garden" in the last decade.

The room was comfortable, clean and well equipped. A recent renovation was obvious, however the lowest bidder obviously won the contract.

We had a late check-in at 22h30, and Ishmael who checked us in was exemplary in his friendly and efficient manner. A late night meal was order from room service, we waited nearly an hour and the food was average at best.

Breakfast and dinners were enjoyed at Chico's. It is buffet style.
Food quality is decent, variety and quantity is poor.
We were faced with long queues every time we went to Chico's
Dinners are unfortunately marred by stage music that makes dinner conversation impossible, making you wish you were back in your room. What happened to a quiet dinner and music/dance afterwards. The restaurant was clean and service prompt.

There are plenty of pools in and around the main hotel, strangely though, none of them are heated, we saw very few people in the water.

Our kids spent an enjoyable hour in the kids club, which was safe, and well supervised. Paid R 40

The waterslides is easy accessible by shuttle and entry to hotel residents only R 10.

Check-out is 10am and was simple.

We had a family weekend and never ventured into the casino or onto the golf course.

This resort is fully booked nearly every weekend and has lost it's exclusivity. It caters for the average gambler seeking an above average gambling experience.

An alternative would be Suncoast and Ushaka in Durban.

We won't return to the Wild Coast Sun Resort

Have stayed many times at this property over the last 20 years and have made many special memories. During our recent stay it is apparent that the property is aging and whilst room renovations are underway one gets the feel that you are staying in a property now decades old.

The room was comfortable as was the bed. We enjoyed the pool area and the dining outlets although we miss The Commodore as a fine dining establishment. Chico's was great for the breakfast buffet.

We hope renovations restore this beautifully located property to its former glory!

We stayed there for two nights. Because it was during the week, we really enjoyed our experience. There were no lines for check in ( we did see the lines on saturday morning as we were leaving) , the rooms were clean and comfortable. ( Two monkeys were playing on my balcony so be careful about leaving the door open). Room service was good and we had a good sleep on the beds. We stayed on the fifth floor which did have cigarette smoke lingering in the hallways.

We LOVED the WILD WAVES which is free if you a guest of the hotel. 100 rand if you are not. It was empty. Staff were friendly, it was clean and super fun.

We ate at the hotels restaurant CHICOS and Squire. The variety was good. Wish there were more options in places to eat at the hotel. I enjoyed the buffet breakfast at Chicos and the staff. Interior needs some modernism.

Overall, a great getaway.

Room Tip: Beach view

The hotel is reasonably clean, not spectacularly so. Nothing stands out as being particularly good. There was a queue 11-people long at check-in with one person checking us in at the lobby, while five hotel employees lounged around at the front desk - unimpressive.

One thing I found particularly odd in this (ahem) 4-star hotel, is that you can't get a drink (I mean a soft drink!) at night without ordering room service or heading out to the neighboring casino. No minibar in the rooms, no vending machines at all in the hotel. The response by the receptionist - "sorry the shop is closed - walk down to the Casino and buy one from the bar" - of course the bar in question won't sell you a closed one for the fridge in your room, so it's verging on a self-catering arrangement.

Food here was OK.

If you're looking for a special coastal vacation, I would suggest heading for Zimbali on the North coast instead.

Room Tip: even numbers are sea-facing rooms.

Stunning location.
Conference facilities were great, but I guess most people visit for the casino experience - nothing unusual or different from the other casinos in teh Sun-group's stable. Food was excellent.
The hotel is old but in very good shape, and rooms have have refurbished and are on par with very good hotels. The gardens and beach are easily acessible. This hotel is a great choice for a stop-over when travelling from Durban towards the south.

Room Tip: The rooms with a garden view were great (more private). Keep the windows closed when you leave so th...
