Les Pres d'Eugenie
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 August 2012

I was given a two-night stay at Les Pres d'Eugenie as a 70th birthday gift. I worried a bit that as someone one used to great luxury, I might feel out of place. But no! The staff was unfailingly warm and courteous, to ALL, not just to one percenters.

The spa, by comparison, was rather unfriendly.

In all of our wonderful experiences throughout France never could anything past or future compare to Michel and ChristineGuerard's Les Pres Eugenie. I cannot begin to explain the level of service you receive, all in perfect harmony and the appearance of complete effortlessness. The food, both from the minceur(diet) and gourmand menu was the best, most exciting tastes we have ever experienced ...completely deserving of every star and more. The spa was complete tranquility and relaxation. The grounds and salons are filled with art and antiques ...almost too much to take in. The auberge du grives also on property should not be missed!!! It is a completely different experience, but also unequalled in its rustic quality cuisine. I could go on and on. Don't let the location deter you...just go.

michel guerard and his wife christine have created a retreat that anticipates and meets your every need without it seeming forced or fussy- like being invited into someone's beautiful home with a restaurant that has stayed creative and innovative with service that was friendly but highly attentive. We went to Eugenie for a 40th wedding anniversary trip and loved every minute- only bad part was leaving.

Room Tip: the hotel has a very good website that showed the rooms in sufficient detail so we got a fabulous sp...

If you ask how much is 24 hours at Les Pres d'Eugenie you probably can't afford it. Otherwise, this place is perfect. From the very polite proffessional staff to the beautifully appointed public areas to the vast gardens to the great room with perfect bath, this place is a gem. And when you enter the restaurant (we did both lunch and dinner) you are transformed to heaven. Everything in this place is 3*. The food, the drinks, the wine list and the staff. Summary- this place is pricey but worth a journey.

We stayed at the Convent (I would highly recommended the suite upstair facing the courtyard even though the lower ones are bigger and have patio but not the inside one upstair). You felt like you are in your own private summer home and you are truly treated like that with their service from the moment you arrived to the time you left. While the three star rest. is well worth it, one should try the country kitchen set up by the Guerards. It is just fantastic. I would also recommend the Huchet cottage (even though it is another 2 hrs drive west).

10 years ago this month for our 25th anniversary we booked a week here but my wife was unable to fly from the US to join me in Europe because of 9/11. So we canceled and decided to recreate that journey in 2011 for our 35th. It was worth the wait. We stayed in Le Couvent des Herbes, an 18th century convent and girls school that is one of the smaller and more private lodgings on the property. We loved our room, so spacious with a nice bath and fireplace, and a private patio overlooking the gardens and greenhouse. Our housekeeper was an absolute delight, preparing a gourmet breakfast for us on several mornings. We found the rest of the staff to be very friendly and helpful and attentive to every request we made. The food (particularly at the less expensive Fermes Aux Grives restaurant was great, and the one night we ate at the gourmet restaurant it was fantastic (although very pricey.) We were perhaps a bit disappointed in some of the spa services as they were designed for people who may have various ailments and were somewhat less interesting to the hale and hardy types (such as the massages, which were basically relaxing rubdowns instead of more classical Thai, Swedish, deep tissue or other common techniques.) But overall, we are glad we spent the week there and found in quite convenient for exploring this lovely part of France including the Cote D'Basque and the Pyrennees.

Room Tip: Le Jardin Secret in Couvent des Herbes - check it out on line.

We recently came back to Les Prés, our 4th stay after 5 years absence. The property keeps getting better with the imaginative renovation of the three salons in the south wing. Think of a big park with a real spa (with waters that are purported to cure almost everything) and several buildings in which to stay, from affordable to ultimate luxury. As before, we stayed in the "Convent" (a real old convent) on the property, 100 yards from the main building. The room was exquisite, even though the bathroom fixtures need to be updated as they are quite anachronistic with the style of the building. Updating the bathroom with an upscale shower would be nice, too. The Grande Cuisine restaurant is unsurpassed, with dishes that are of a complexity of savors that we have not seen anywhere else - and this is why we keep returning every few years. There are several menus to choose from, including the "base menu" (Le Repas Gourmand des Français) that has some of the main signature dishes and good wines from the property. At almost each visit, we have had the then variation of "L’Oreiller Moelleux de Mousseron.." and "Le Gâteau Mollet ...", which are both exquisite and whose memory occupy our long gastronomic winters in the US. On our last night, we went to the restaurant "La Ferme des Grives", also owned by the Guérards, and which is to deliver country style cuisine. While we enjoyed the building itself, we were not very impressed with the food, perhaps because of the comparison with the two previous dinners in the gourmet restaurant.
Needless to say that the service was impeccable, friendly, cheerful and never obsequious as could be feared in such establishment. Again, we were not disappointed and we will be back. A "MUST VISIT" for all amateurs of the grandest cuisine...
