“Beautiful bird watching”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

We stayed for three days at the Cala Lodge and found it to be a very peaceful retreat, which attracts birds. The owner, Francisco took us on a birding tour, where we saw the male and femal quetzals! The staff were very accomodating and the small kitchen allowed us to also prepare food. It was beautiful lodging, with a large balcony looking into the rain forest.

Cala Lodge was built on three acres of property or 1.2 hectares of forest right next to the world renowned Children’s Eternal Rain Forest which has an area of 52.800 acres and it is the largest private reserve of Central America.

What I really love about this place is that even though it is a short walk from town, it’s still in the cloud forest and feels like it’s out in the bush miles from anywhere. The views are amazing and we saw hummingbirds, toucans and other birds on the property. The staff are really nice & helpful! Rates are very reasonable and you get a choice of cooked breakfasts in the morning, nice pancakes!

We went to Curi Cancha Reserve and I managed to find a Resplendent Quetzal on my own (all the guides had gone home for the day)!

My wife and I are elderly S Africans .In terms of value for money it was far better than anything else we experienced in Costa Rica .The lodge is very well located in the forest but within 10 or so minutes walking of most of the attractions in the town. The accommodation is spacious,we had a suite, quiet, and comfortable. The owners are most helpful and organisedour entire touring activities in the area

We stayed two nights at Cala Lodge and left loving the experience. This is a great escape run by a lovely couple who work very very hard to accommodate every need. In fact it's worth going just to meet them. If you are a birder (which I'm not), or "a ticker" which is a birder's birder then this is the place for you. Monteverde is an animals watchers mecca, and this is a great resort to retreat to after a day's activity.
The rooms are small but nicely appointed. if you can get the rooms on the 2nd floor of the lodge they are nicer... we know because our hosts kindly moved our family of five to the second floor on our second night because we didn't:
BOOK EARLY: we booked 5 months in advance but that was not enough to secure the 2nd story rooms, and you need this, because the one great flaw to this lodge, to which others have posted here, is that if you are on the first floor you are essentially in a drum head... every footstep from above reverberates below... and with all the birders getting up at a 6am and getting in late from apres-birding parties it is hard to sleep on the first floor... we pointed this out to our hosts and they moved us... again they are awesome people... SO a full five stars, for a beautiful setting, lovely breakfast included and day long coffee with very knowledgeable and helpful staff... Thank you so much for making our Monteverde stay wonderful!!

We really enjoyed the breakfast room and common deck, especially watching the colorful birds feasting at the fruit feeder. Jossie at the front desk was extremely helpful and kind, setting us up with a wonderful naturalist tour of the cloud forest, recommending the nearby butterfly garden--an interesting place within walking distance--helping us change our coffee tour to the afternoon so that we could visit the cloud forest in the morning, when animals are more active. She also called our attention to visiting wildlife, including a group of coatimundis. Our room--upstairs in the main lodge--was spacious and had a very nice view but was lacking in amenities. There were no towel racks or comfortable chairs. The sitting area outside the upstairs rooms was very uninviting, as well, and the stairway leading upstairs had paint splatters. I felt as if I was in someone's in-progress renovation. But we were hardly in the room--too busy with activities and spending time on the lovely deck downstairs. So overall, a very pleasant, peaceful & quiet stay.

Spotless Suite, very tastefully decorated, comfortable beds and pillows, A TUB, beautiful balcony surrounded by lush green cloud forest, birds, monkeys, families of raccoons (or similar) all seen from our balcony. Fully equipped kitchenette with everything we needed. Francisco, the owner, spoke perfect English, gave us helpful advise with maps and tips of places to see. We plan to return to this area and will most definitely stay here again. Wonderful breakfast included. A bit tough to find, but that's what makes it such a nice quiet hideaway. Well worth it.

My husband and I stayed at the Cala Lodge for three nights and we absolutely loved our time there. We came to Monteverde from Arenal and hadn't booked any activities yet. Jossie at the front desk was more than helpful with telling us about different activities and showing us where restaurants and attractions were located. She helped us book a night walk, ziplining at Extremo Park (which was amazing!) and a suspension bridge tour at Selvatura Park. We were really grateful for her knowledge and her willingness to help. We also met the owner, Francisco, and he was very friendly as well. It's obvious he cares a lot about each guest having a good stay.

Our room was just perfect. It was spacious and we felt at home right away. It was more like an apartment than just a room, with a great little balcony where we sat in the mornings. The bathroom was large and the shower always had hot water and good water pressure. The maid left us lovely towel decorations with flowers. There was a short hiking trail ('Agouti Trail') en route to our room that we walked one day, and it was a nice way to see more of the property.

Breakfasts at Cala Lodge were delicious. I tried all three of the different breakfast options and was more than satisfied with each one, although the pancakes were probably my favorite. The coffee was also great! The owners put fruit out on the terrace railing for the birds every morning and we really liked watching the different birds. The lodge serves tea and coffee every afternoon as well, which was a nice touch.

The lodge is also nicely situated. It's close enough to walk to downtown Santa Elena, where a lot of the restaurants and shops are located (it's a steep walk uphill to get back to the lodge, but a great way to get your exercise). We had dinner at Don Luis one night, which was great, and tried Johnny's Pizza another night and liked it there as well. Our favorite restaurant was probably Morpho's, which was beautiful and had some of the best desserts we have ever had! Jossie gave us a map with all of the restaurant names on it so we never got lost or confused about where anything was.

We will definitely be recommending Cala Lodge to anyone visiting Costa Rica. It's a wonderful place run by great people!
