Interns and fellow guests entertained and educated us at the ecolodge. When you arrive, somebody sits you down and helps you plan your time, including onsite nature tours and reservations for nearby attractions. We saw an armadillo,,agoutis, a,kinkajou, and several tarantulas on site hikes, enjoyed conversations at the group meals, and gotmamguidedmtour of their neighbor's 1-man coffee business. They also scheduled a,chocolate tour, a magnificent tour at nearby Curi,Cancha reserve, a,zip line, and a horseback ride. Everyone was friendly but low key. The Cabina rooms were simple and very pleasant. Highly recommended.

This was the perfect place to begin our Costa Rica trip (Mom plus 14 year old boy). The staff was excellent and the volunteers very helpful. We toured the grounds and learned about the ecosystem, plants and animals, and saw coati, paca, many birds, an enormous leaf-cutter ant den and much more. In the morning, monkeys and in the afternoon gorgeous countryside. The food is plentiful and excellent, and they pack lunches and serve early breakfasts on request (do not pass up the hot chocolate). My only recommendation is that you have a car, as the taxi to and from activities can get pricey.

Room Tip: The cabins are great -- and the walk to and from always interesting (bring a flashlight!)...

First of all, you need to understand what kind of a place this is. Its run by the University of Georgia as a place for education & research. Its not a hotel or a resort in any normal meaning of those words. The accommodation is not luxurious. There's no swimming pool, sauna, bar etc, you get the picture. You come here to stay at the edge of an incredibly diverse rainforest and have an opportunity to learn about and experience that habitat, as well as to learn about conservation and sustainable use of the rainforest.

We came in July, stayed for 3 nights in the cabinas, two adults & two boys age 14 and 16. We were in one room, it was tight but fine. You won't be spending much time in your room anyway. BIG solid safe to keep all our stuff. Shower good, bathroom in good shape. Nice shared verandah that made you feel like you were perched up in the trees. Fantastic ground Costa Rican coffee for us to brew in our room each day; I'm not normally a big coffee drinker, but if it was like this everywhere I would become one!

Food was cafeteria style, nothing fancy, but good hearty, typical Costa Rican food. They made a packed lunch for us when needed. Staff always ready/willing to answer any questions we had. Only tricky part for us was finding it! We arrived by driving the dirt road from Tenorio through Tilaran, and didn't realize exactly how late it connected onto the standard instructions, so we spent 30 anxious minutes worrying if we might actually miss dinner. Asking at Monteverde Reserve sorted that out. Make sure you have printed out the map so you can figure it out on the ground. GPS was invaluable!

We were a bit surprised when one of the naturalists sat down with us before dinner the first evening we were there to work out our complete schedule, but it was great to have that all done and be able to sort out how it would all fit in. The way it worked out, we ended up with Kate seeming to be our personal guide for almost all our activities, which was great, because she was excellent. She really knew her stuff (I have a PhD in a biological discipline, & my wife is a Masters botanist, so we know she wasn't giving us [--]).

On campus we did the night hike (well worth the time), the tour of the medicinal garden, 1 hour talk on birds (good), the rainforest hike on the Camino Real trail. Off campus we did the chocolate factory tour (good, worth the time, very interesting and some free chocolate), a guided tour at Curi Cancha nature reserve with Esteban (fantastic - sloth, toucan, quetzals, bellbirds, many other birds; find him on trip advisor by searching for Esteban, Monteverde) and zip lining at Selvatura (great!). We also did our own exploring around campus and saw many more birds, butterflies.

Truly a beautiful place. Can't recommend it highly enough. Might seem pricy, but given you have all meals paid for and you are living in comfort in the rainforest, its CHEAP for a major life experience.

Three generations from age 10 to 74 - all had a great experience. Even though it was our 7th time to Costa Rica, we all learned so much. We highly recommend it for families - or anyone - that is visiting Costa Rica for the first time. Very educational and very safe. Lots to do on campus but also nearby. Great place to home base out of if you have a vehicle. Pura Vida

My husband is a UGA alum, so when I accidentally came across UGA Costa Rica while researching where to stay near Monteverde, I knew we had to do it. We had one of the cabanas with three adults and three children. It worked out fine for us. We loved the night hike and milking the cows in the morning. It was a great experience for all of us! And seeing what all the volunteers and students are doing there was very interesting.

Here is my ONLY complaint and warning to others: You will have some bugs in your room, especially if you leave a light on while you go to dinner. We came back to a room full of moths and various other flying bugs and our bathroom was covered in ants. The screens have holes in them, so while I think some of the bugs would have been there anyway, we made it worse by accidentally leaving a light on.

We were only there for one night and had to take off after breakfast, but the nice kitchen staff laid out lunches for us to make and take with us. What a nice touch! It is pretty hard to find. We had a GPS and the internet instructions, but were not on the same road they take you in on, but managed to find San Luis and saw the tiny UGA sign by the road.

The roads leading up the mountains are treacherous, so please be careful if driving yourselves. Don't even try it without a 4x4. Worth the trouble of the roads to get there however! As are the views on the way up!

We flew into Costa Rica and went straight to the San Luis Ecolodge. We did a guided nature hike, the night hike, watched the video and visited a local coffee farm and the medicinal garden tour with the staff from San Luis. All our guides were passionate about the forest and the area, knowledgeable and accommodating. It was a really great introduction to the plants, animals and Costa Rica in general, we are grateful we started our 3 week adventure at San Luis. Would also recommend a guided hike at Curi Cancha.

This was our 5th time to stay at the Ecolodge with our 7th and 8th grade class - and we'll be back! The accommodations are perfect - comfortable and simple. The food is good - a nice variety of local foods. The staff is exceptional - friendly and helpful. We arranged the program in advance via e-mail and that worked well. I asked for certain types of activities and the program manager got back to me with lots of options.

And then there's the setting! So beautiful as it's nestled up against the continental divide with the cloud forest above.
