“Family travelling across Costa RIca”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2013

Our travel company suggested my family stay in this hotel. It was not a great choice.

This hotel is a good 10 minutes drive outside of Monteverde. It had a pervading smell of varnish which was very off putting and the reception desk on arrival did not seem to know we were coming, and once our booking was acknowledged, they had no idea how long we had booked for!

The choice at breakfast was extremely poor, and although the hotel was nearly empty what was on offer for breakfast kept running out. Meals were overpriced and the one dinner we ate there was accompanied by stone-cold vegetables. We did complain but the staff did not seem to care.

We went for dinner a number of times into Monteverde. Some lovely eating places in the town. The taxi fare cost $10 each way (there were 6 of us so we needed a large cab). We reduced the cost of this by asking our excursions to drop us in town and we had a late lunch/early dinner, only needed a taxi one way back to the hotel and then we did not have to eat lunch or dinner there at all.

The rooms were large and clean, the beds very comfy.

Closest hotel to the entrance of the Monteverde NP. Very nice hotel. Big comfortable rooms with free wifi. Good restaurant for lunch and dinner. Choices at breakfast rather limited. Make sure you have 4x4 when drinving up in rainy season, because rough road to get there. I would recommend this hotel very much to families travelling with children too.

We loved our 2 night stay at Trapp Family Lodge in Monteverde. What a delight to wake up and look at the clouds on the mountain and hear the music of the numerous birds that live in the forest. Well worth the long bumpy ride to Monteverde. We had dinner the night we arrived and it was delicious but a bit pricy. The breakfast was okay -- not the best, but satisfying and fresh. We especially enjoyed the yummy marmalade. The staff is well trained and provided excellent customer service. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We wished we had stayed longer and will definitely stay there again if we return. We recommend it -- if you like nature - you won’t be disappointed!

Room Tip: All rooms have a wonderful view of the forest.

Been going to Costa Rica since 1990...and for last 10 years. This place is nice and I would recommend it. Beautiful setting and wood floors and ceilings. Of course mountain suites are nicer than regular rooms...we stayed in regular rooms. Don't like policy of charing per person even for kids. Should be charged for room with 4 people maximum. Breakfast was good but did not eat other meals there due to very high prices. I suggest they lower the prices on that. Tons of tour places in Monteverde, but couldn't hurt to have a little desk set up in hotel as it is kind of secluded...but that makes it great too! Bring a 4 x 4......

Room Tip: if you can afford get the mountain suite

This hotel is located just outside of the cloud reserve. It is secluded and far from town. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The kitchen staff however were a bit less accommodating. I went to make reservation for dinner at 8(the latest we could eat) and his expression was that of disappointment. He requested that WE eat earlier because it was a slow night. This was very unprofessional to me. During dinner they rushed us while we looked over the menu. I would say this is my only complaint. The rooms are large with a nice sun room patio. As I stated before you will be far from town so if you drove you will be fine.

Upon arrival, we were happy to relax in our room, but were surprised to realize that there weren't many people there. The lodge was also in the middle of a lot renovations.
The staff were very helpful and polite. They helped us book all our tours and gave us advice on what to do in the area.
You must go to the Biological Cloud Forest reserve. It is stunning and only a short walk from the lodge. A definite plus for the lodge!
The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. The view was beautiful. Especially in the morning when the skies were clear.
The only downside to the room was that it had a strong smell of varnish. It was clear that they had done the floors just before we had arrived. I know these things must be done and I appreciate them maintaining their property, but it still wasn't very pleasant. Since we were the only ones in our area, everything seemed very cold and uninviting. Walking out the door, you came across cement being poured and a lot of work being done around you.

Pros: The staff
Cons: off-season construction

I do recommend the Trapp Family Lodge, however I'd be sure that they weren't doing construction and that you weren't alone on the end of the property.

Room Tip: the views are wonderful. You won't have a problem getting a good room.
