We found this gem through TripAdvisor. Friendly staff, they hooked us up with a guide for a nite walk, to see nocturnal critters (like a fledgling owl and stick bugs). Covered pool with two jacuzzis was great at the end of a day zip lining. Facilities are in top condition. Did not eat at the restaurant, so cannot comment on the food. Very reasonably priced for a family of four on a budget. Got a discount as it was the low season.

Great place to stay. Enjoyed the pool and hot tubs. There was also a stray puppy there that my kids loved. Food at restaurant was good but pricey. The rooms were very spacious and beds were very comfortable.

Quaint and quiet little hotel nestled in the tropical mountains of Monteverde. The hotel is comprised of 42 rooms conveniently laid out through the grounds, all within a short walk to the restaurant and swimming pool.
When we entered our room (#3), we saw a large space with older furnishings. Had all the things we expected, but nothing special. It was just what we were looking for, a non-assuming room that felt at home in the cloud forest.
The restaurant serves a rather inclusive menu, covering all of the bases. We found the food to be well prepared with a nice presentation, and not overly priced. Breakfast is served in the Gallery Restaurant, which has large windows to view the feeding birds outside, and was, well, just ok. The staff did have a bit of trouble refilling the food containers due to the heavy customer traffic the second morning.
While we did not use the covered swimming pool, it was quite large, and has two spas adjoining.
Fonda Vela is conveniently located to many eco-tourist attractions.
And yes, it was raining upon our arrival, rained the entire next day as we scoped out the local attractions, and was raining when we left. Just what we were expecting.

Room Tip: While our room was nice, (including a side porch that went unused), we did not have the best view...

I loved this hotel. Going to Monteverde the goal is to be in the mountains. When I was driving to the center of town (which is small) I was disappointed to see that some hotels were right up on the town. I was worried that Fonda Vela was going to be there as well, I wanted to be a little bit more isolated. Fortunately, just beyond the paved roads of the town, maybe another 5 to 8 minutes by car you reach Fonda Vela.
It's close enough to town that it's no trouble to drive in and pick up anything you might need but just far away enough that you feel separate, a little isolated in the lush green mountain.
Despite being in the woods the rooms are incredibly clean and there wasn't a single insect in the room. The room had hardwood floors, a spacious bathroom and the beds were very comfortable. There was no A/C but we never really needed it since it's a little cold up there. The room has a very large window with a good screen. So you can open it and get the fresh mountain air without letting an bugs in. It works just as well as an A/C. In fact, we had to close it at night because it got too cold.
My only complaint about the room was that not all the windows had curtains, so if you need darkness to sleep, like I do, you are pretty much getting up as the sun rises. But in a beautiful place like that, sleep isn't really a priority. Another issue I had, was that the rooms don't have wifi, not a huge deal on a vacation but it's an amenity that most places have.
The hotel's property is huge, very well maintained. They have a trail that is fairly easy to travel and takes you along a dry river bed. It takes about 20 minutes to walk. There are tours all over the place for hiking, but the trail at the hotel was nice for a quick walk, we saw, a frog, a snake, different caterpillars and lizards on our walk on the trail.
The staff was very friendly, very helpful, I only had the breakfast at the hotel but it was very delicious. The staff isn't very visible, which I liked, you feel like you are alone with your significant other, but if you need someone they are easy to find and are very willing to help.
Overall, the place was beautiful, the room was great, it was all very romantic and cozy. I would recommend it to everyone.

Room Tip: Bring a tall 4WD car. The road to Monteverde is rough and this hotel is past the paved roads of the...

what a charming location the rooms are set in beautiful grounds with sculptures and fountains, it is delightful. The rooms are big, king size and queen size bed with views over the grounds.... bathroom also well appointed. We enjoyed a very pleasant evening meal..... but breakfast was a disaster... very poor quality, no staff about and what a shame to let down a very pleasant 24 hours......
Its quite windy and cool in Monteverde at this time.

Room Tip: in the 31-35 block the views are attractive.

Definitely for someone who wants to be away from it all. Awesome views out over the jungle to the Nicoya Bay (when the clouds aren't in). Extremely quiet and surrounded by jungle.

Our group was in rooms 12 (standard room), 8 (junior suite), 4 (standard room) and 3(junior suite). We stayed here for 3 nights.

The high points were:

- Great staff. Most of our interaction was thru Allen and he was fantastic. I could not recommend someone more. Gave us lots of impartial ideas on places to see and things to do. He was very knowledgeable and always very pleasant.

- Amazing views from our room's balcony. Lots of bird viewing directly from your room.

- The upper rooms (12 and 4), with a balcony, had slightly better views. The lower rooms (8 and 3) were more spacious.

- The grounds were a beautiful mix of manicured areas with wild areas.

- The pool was one of the nicest we'd been to in Costa Rica and having it as a covered pool was a real bonus - you could swim during a torrential downpour.

- The restaurant on the ground was very good. Great dinners and breakfasts, and very good bar in very nice rooms. A number of choices for dinner rooms. Great balcony for sitting out and having drinks. I rate the restaurant highly.

- All of the buildings and facilities were very warm and quaint feeling due to their hardwood construction.

Negatives:

- You were isolated. Definitely needed a taxi to town (easy to get one - Approx $10-14 depending on direction). We did walk to the park entrance - that wasn't too far.

- In the upper rooms (standard room), the bathroom setup around the sink was very tight and very inconvenient (see picture). You needed to walk thru that area to get to the toilet and shower.

- You had to go to the reception area or restaurant to get WiFi reception.

We stayed in the buildings that are north of the reception area. There are additional buildings to the south. We didn't get a chance to see what they were like.

In summary it was a very enjoyable stay in beautiful surroundings. It was extremely relaxing. I would definitely go back there again.

This hotel sits in its own extensive grounds on a hillside with a good view of the surrounding area. We were able to sit and watch the bird life from a bench in the hotel gardens. The gardens include a dry river walk, where we found plenty of birds including a toucan. Other toucans could be seen in the distance flying around.

The hotel has paths that are stoney and not made up. This meant that if you carry your case ( as we did on checking out) it is rather difficult to use the wheels. The room we had was spacious and had a nice view of the gardens. Part of the fun of the place was finding a large cockroach in the bathroom- this may not be the opinion held by all! The hotel is on the edge of the cloud forest.

We did not need to travel very far for a guided tour of the cloud forest. On arrival within an hour the friendly reception staff had organised an afternoon trip for us to a local tourist farm to view coffee, sugar cane and the production of chocolate. Down in the town, which is about 2km away, there are extensive tourist facilities.

The hotel boasts local art from its founder. The staff were friendly. The service good. My only complaint was that at all meals the bread was limited to one roll. The served breakfast was OK, but not of the best, the choice was limited to 3 different styles, and you got what you were given.

The reasonable sized swimming pool was rather cold ( we were on a hillside in the mountains), the hot pool was essential after using it. There were no staff around the pool and it was difficult to find where the towels were kept, eventually some kind, non English speaking lady guest, went into the gents changing and within some of the lockers were towels!

Room Tip: Choose one overlooking the hillside view
