Alexandra Holiday Park
Reviewed 5 August 2014

My girlfriend and I visited here as part of our NZ tour. Really there is very little to do in Alexandra other than the Otago Central Rail Trail which we were there for. We chose this place as it was the only listed campervan park in the town in the free Jason's guide we had, though we now realise there was another park nearby...oh how we wish we had gone there.

I first started to feel weird when I met the owner, she was nice but was a little too intrusive about my relationship with my girlfriend, its none of her business if I am married or not. Then we drove into the park, it was like a campervan/caravan graveyard. Honestly, it wouldn't have seemed out of place on The Walking Dead. The buildings had a delapidated scout camp feel about them, all concrete floors and sheet metal doors, I half expected to meet an axe murderer when leaving the showers one night.

It's also weirdly up to date in some places (taps which have no handles and work via touch sensors, automatic doors), which when contrasting it with the dated decor and toilet block which feels like a slaughter house is highly bizarre. To be fair the place was clean, tidy and cheap but its still felt a bit backward and the both of us had a strange sense of 'end of days' about the place.

In conclusion it was cheap and tidy but not exactly comfortable. My suggestion, at least have a look at the other campsite in the town before you come here.

Here we were - a travel weary group in need of a warm comfortable place to sleep - and we found it. If you want luxury, 5 star accommodation with all the trimmings, then this place is not for you. If however, like us, all you need is a warm cosy, quiet place to doss down for the night, then this place is perfect. We chose one of the Lodges they have, the Courtney Lodge and we were very happy. This has all bedding, 2 heaters and kitchen facilities. It was modern, clean and well presented. We slept soundly and left refreshed the next day. And all at a very reasonable price.

We were quoted a price when booking, the charged $30 more for our stay. It was an extremely quiet time of year and the management made us feel like it was an inconvenience to have our business. We were a large group and had to request to have the heating left on through the freezing nights (we had a number of small children in our group). This is not our first negative experience, we will never stay or spend any money at this camp again as the management are unhelpful and downright rude.

We had a powered camping site for two nights and while there were plenty of people staying at the time, we still had a big choice of campsites and chose a very peaceful site surrounded by trees but still handy to all the amenities. On site store which also doubles as a takeaway bar and model car enthusiasts will be please to see the huge range of model cars for sale!

While the facilities may be getting a little bit dated we found them to be clean and tidy during our visit. And really...does dated matter??!

Not sure we would like to stay in the height of the summer but only because it would be way too busy for our liking. Definately a great place for families though and we would happily return ourselves in the off season again.

We stayed in a tent here, and had a good choice of where we could go. We got a friendly welcome. It is getting pretty dated - the seats in the TV rooms are circa 1970 I would say. There is a small supermarket 10-15 mins walk away. Showers were nice and hot. It was clean, but I got the impression that the owners are just running out of steam with it in terms of maintenance and wanting to be there.

Our family are staying at Labour weekend.
The Park has other families staying and the kids are all having a ball.
Think we'll come back at Christmas time if there is room as I believe it is pretty much booked out over the New Year period according to people we talked to..
Looked all over the Park and could not find this bedroom the bedrooms like the living area are all modern. Really loved the fridge/ freezers in the units great for the summer - plenty of room for icecreams, and BBQ meats etc.

Room Tip: The river is great for fishing - but you must watch the children

This worn down and outdated camp ground is really not a nice place to stay! Amenities are old and outdated, although they do have a fresh coat of paint. A classic example of owners who think they can rip off their customers by litterally letting them camp on a huge piece of land, and do nothing to make their stay a good one. Surprisingly there are many regular campers here. They must be used to bad service and amenities that were modern 100 years ago! One of the worst in New Zealand!
