We stayed at the Mercure Grand in Granville, France for 5 nights in August 2013. The staff was very welcoming and spoke more than enough English to be able to communicate with American and UK guests. Even though it was just my husband and myself traveling, we booked a family room which had a separate living area (with bed couch) so that we would have a little extra room to spread out. It worked out perfectly in terms of space, the only problem being that the master bed was in a loft area which meant we had to trek down a set of stairs to use the bathroom when nature called in the middle of the night. Not ideal for our over-40 bladders, but we managed.
The room was very clean and the shower very generous. The bathroom area, in general, was what I would consider quite large by European standards and sort of high-average by American. Our view from the balcony was part city and part ocean. Just perfect...even had a little table and two chairs. Granville is VERY hilly. Be prepared with proper footwear to walk up and down some very steep hills and stairs. The views will make it all worth your while. And also, you won't feel quite as guilty after eating the delicious Moules Frîtes and crêpes.
While there, we did not eat at the hotel for any meals, but we did use the parking garage and wifi services. If you are driving a larger vehicle, the parking garage is perilous. Thankfully we had a car that was fairly small, but either way you still have to be very cautious as well as skilled at backing in and out of small spaces.
The wifi is annoyingly slow. Vaguely OK for checking email and weather, but fairly annoying if you are trying to research travel ideas, load maps, etc.,...or god forbid watch anything on youtube. I understand that this is a vacation destination and we weren't there to be using our computers, but after dinner and before bed, my husband wanted to watch a few guitar lessons on youtube to wind down, and was continually frustrated. I was trying to research information on Mont Saint Michel and Saint Malo and was also becoming exasperated with the time it took for even simple web pages to load. Not a deal breaker, but I expected better service from a large hotel chain.
The one other con was their new air conditioning system. There was some sort of issue with the one in our room which required them to continually have to reset something down at reception, where they have the ability to control all cooling in the hotel. With the heat of the day rising, the loft of our room was fairly warm a couple of nights, as it was summer, and it was quite aggravating to have to keep calling down to the front desk to have them turn on the a/c because it kept shutting off. They need to address this glitch. I spoke with someone at the front desk on the third day and they supposedly addressed it, but the next day it continued to turn off on its own, after being on for five minutes. I would turn it on again and get the settings correct and it would work for another five minutes and then shut off again. I spoke with the front desk person upon check out and she assured me that they would look into the issue for the next guest.
That being said, the positives far outweighed anything negative about the wifi, air conditioning or parking garage. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends. They had a key for beach access which was very nice...for all 5 summer days it's actually warm enough to swim in Normandy :) They also had a mini-fridge in each room (very tiny), which was perfect to fit a little cheese, wine and foie gras that we got at the market on Saturday morning. I already mentioned the nice size of the bathroom and I also was pleased with the fact that the toilet is separated, as they normally are in Europe. The elevator proximity to the rooms and garage was very convenient and storage in the room was more than adequate and the complimentary tea set up was much appreciated and used. Overall, we had a wonderful stay and really got our exercise in. Granville is a nice jumping off point for so many spots in Normandy & Brittany (under two hours to: Saint Malo, Mont Saint Michel, Bayeux, Omaha Beach, Rennes, coastal drive to Jullouville, Honfleur, la route du Cidre, Deauville) and you won't be disappointed with the Mercure. Enjoy!
