We stayed at Cococape during christmas and New Years and left the island and hotel with mixed feelings. Having been to Thailand ten times (always going to different places) we had high expectations upon arriving. The staff at the hotel is very friendly, always smiling and making us guests feel comfortable. From the pier, the sunset really is amazing on a cloudless day!
During the first week, we stayed in the "Moonlight" room which was really lovely with a big balcony. During the last couple days of our stay we had to move to the "Happy Boat" which unfortunately was a disappointment. First of all because of its location, we were all bitten by mosquitos at night and found it hard to sleep. The room was in general run down and with no "cozy feeling" like many other rooms.
The New Year celebration at the hotel was excellent, with a delicious buffet, lovely decorations and many great activities organized by the staff. The food being served during night in the restaurant is also very good. In regard of the breakfast, this really was a huge disappointment. The selection was very small, with e.g. only white toast bread and one type of egg. Many times they would run out of different things and we generally had the impression that very little attention and creativity was put on this. Considering the price of staying at the hotel, we found that many guests were surprised and overall unhappy with the breakfast!
Koh Mak as an island is a really nice place to come and just relax. Even during high season, you won't find many people on the beach. Before coming to Koh Mak, we heard that there were quit many sandflies on the island. As we usually never really get any type of bites when traveling, we didn't think this would be a problem. Well, just after a few days on the beach, we all had bites all over. Coconut oil made it a little better, however we were many times recommended to not stay at the beach to avoid the sandflies. Once you get the bites they are itching and the beach is no longer so attractive!
Koh Mak could be a very nice get away for a few days if you are planning on renting a motorbike, going around the island, relaxing on the pier and eating very delicious food. For a longer beach holiday, I would however not return.
