“Beautifuls rooms well integrated in a charming seaside location”
Reviewed 16 January 2011

The hotel is beautifully built and decorated, with wide price range from shared bathroom cabanas to stilish big rooms and villas, including one made from an ancient boat. All rooms are different and well integrated in the beautiful surroundings. Our room was one of the most expensive, it had full sea view, very nice private verandah, hige bathroom, mosquito nets everywhere. The hotel is located on the northern side of the island, the beach is tiny and not sunny and it's very windy (which is from my point of view an advantage since it's never too hot). Free transport is provided to the more attractive Southern beach (15 min. uphill - downhill walk). Your sleep may be disturbed by extremely noisy little frogs, apparently protected species, which have found a home in the little decorative ponds in front of the rooms (we had them one night on three).
Staff was nice and helpful. Only negative point the breakfast, poor and not varied, if you don't want egg you are left with bad toast and poor quality jam. Coffee particularly bad (soluble). We did not use the restaurant (many nice places available on the Souther beach). Place ideal for families and those looking for quiet.

We looked at a few places on Koh Mak and found that the Cococape Resort really was the most beautiful place to spend the few days we had on the island. Cococape is made up of several different huts and lodges, we stayed in one of the tree house style huts which was wonderfully rustic (and really quite cheap) - just what you look for when travelling around Thailand. We were initially booked into one of the water side huts (hut on stilts partly in the water) but it was quite windy for a couple of days and the very helpful staff upgraded us as they thought we would get a better nights sleep in one of the tree house huts. The Thai food at the resort was also amazing. We cant speak highly enough of the staff and the resort as a whole.

We stayed at this resort for 3 nights in one of the 3 Baan Thai Suites. The view over the bay is great, but to have the view you need to climb many steps to get to the room, which leaves you out of breath at the top. The staff had surrounded outside the room with ant powder and this kept them away.
The Thai food was very good much better than the western breakfast and quite good value for money for being on an island. We walked to Koh Mak resort just around the bay they had a more extensive menu but they include service charge where as Cococape do not.
The sandflies where not to much of a problem although we did get bitten once.

We hired a kayak and visited the nearby island Koh Kham, you have to pay 100 bht each to land there, but you do get a free can of drink. The sea is really flat and great for snorkling here. We then kayaked to koh pee (ghost island) which had some fantastic coral surrounding the island..

The walk into the centre of Koh Mak from the resort is up a very steep hill and took around 15 mins but there was a shop to buy drinks half way. In the center there are 5 or 6 restaurants available although we where there in the low season and only 3 were open.

Next time we visit we would hire a motorbike to tour round the island

Remember when you visit the island that they do not have any ATM's to withdraw money from.

We had five days available and decided to head off to Koh Mak. Did a bit of research on available accommodation on Koh Mak and decided on the Cococape resort.
We took the lowest accommodation which is the Baan Talay straw huts on the water’s edge with shared bathrooms. All was very clean and neat. The breakfasts are simple, you have a choice of 4 set menus, one of the days they had a buffet breakfast. For the evenings their restaurant menu is great and inexpensive but we also went and tried out other places on the island like Aimmys Food (a must when you are there). The staff speaks very little English but with a bit of patience one gets through or just ask for the receptionist.

The good thing about Cococape is that they have good facilities, stunning pool and the pier is great to swim off, tan on and to do some snorkeling off. Free WiFi and great Thai massage next to the pool. They don’t have sandy beached directly in front of the accommodation but there are sandy beaches next to the resort. If you are conserved about litter (which we didn’t find a lot of, just old logs and old coconuts) the Koh Mak resort next to the Cococape clean their sand beach everyday and fumigate. Other things we did while we were there was explore the island on a rented scooter and kayak to Koh Rayang Island and around the coast.
What we discovered by traveling around the island and looking at all the other resorts is that the south-west section of the island is where all the restaurants and ‘action’ is, that is up until about 10am when the whole island pretty much shuts down. The north and east tips are very secluded and good for those who really want to get away from it all,… really private. The north-west coast is more sheltered from the wind and good for families with small kids as the water is calm and shallow.

I moved here from Monkey Island. For an extra 500BHT I got a much better standard of room, service, location. So here for three nights and really liked it. It's at the very end of the northern beach so not right on it, but only a walk away. They have their own pier stretching out 100m into the sea which is the best seat in the house. The sea breeze keeps you cool and the sunset from here is gorgeous.
Room was good size, separate bathroom and toilet - although slightly open air a mozzie coil seemed to keep them away.
I must must must warm you of the sandflies though. They are a real pain and left me totally covered in bites. Even with inspect spray!
Free wifi and really friendly staff make this a lovely place to stay.
The nearby Koh Mak resort has a lovely cafe on the beach that does high-quality lunches.
The menu at Coccape is not the biggest for a selection but the small village is only a 15 min walk away.
Koh Mak is a real hidden gem (apart form the sandflies) and gives you a taste of how parts of Thailand must have been before the tourist revolution ruined other islands. Rough Guide says this beach isn;t as nice as it's southern alternative but I totally disagree.

We stayed here for 5 days, and had properly moved, if we had not paid for the 5 days the day we arrived. The food in the restaurant where expencive and not very good. Breakfast was terrible. Our aircon in the room was broken when we arrived, but they fixed it... after a couple of days the aircon broke again, and we complained. They tried to fix it again, but it never worked properly so we complained again, and the girl: "Bun" at the frontdesk, went angry and told us that we had broken it ourselves, and besides they had also given us a discount on the room!! We finally got an other room with a working aircon.

After 2 days we didn't eat any more meals at the Cococape restaurant, but went to some of the other restaurants on the island with much better food at lower prices.

I booked to stay at Cococape for myself, my girlfriend and another couple for 1 week over christmas 2008. I spoke to the manager guy on the phone and booked online and they seemed very professional. On arrival the "compound" looks impressive and well manicured and the restaurant/games area looks good. The pool area and rooms are lovely, but there is NO beach, although a short walk led us to a perfect strip of sand had it not been for the rubbish that was washed up there. The breakfast was TERRIBLE...cold eggs, soggy toast, and very little thai choice...cold noodles and eggs again. The staff didn't have a clue what they were doing, a Thai guy who was running the bar told me most of the staff are first years from a catering and hospitality college, so they tend to smile and be curteous but can't understand a word you are saying. The manager lady was rude and the standard of food was average. To top it off on the day that we were leaving, we had booked a speed boat back to Ko Chang with Monkey shack(on the other side of the island). One of the guys who could'nt speak a word of English, suddenly started talking like the Queen by saying "excuse me sir, but the speedboat is cancelled due to bad weather, we have a boat leaving later on, we will put you on that" He then passed me his phone, and a guy on the other end said "Sorry, Boat cancel" I went to Monkey Shack to check and the boat was running as normal...on my return to Cococape, our helpful friend suddenly forgot how to speak English and at first refused to take us to Monkey Shack(Boat pick up point), eventually we got there with 2 minutes to spare. I know there is a scam around every corner in Thailand, but you don't expect it after spending a week at the same place...The other side is totally different..Poms place was nice and he was very helpful..AVOID Cococape.
