We stayed for 5 nights in the Lanna bungalows and throughly enjoyed our stay. We had been to Ko Mak 10 yrs ago and was pleseantly surprised at how little it had changed, all of the changes were for the better. We were lucky enough to discover the Ao Kao White Sands Resort after staying 2 nights on the other side of the island. From the beginning we were welcomed by all of the staff, a credit to them and the manager Mr Chain. The hospitality of everybody was above and beyond what was expected. We had a mini concert on our last night and the whole resort turned out, great fun was had by all. We are already planning our return.

We stayed at Ao Kao for 3 of the 6 nights we spent on Koh Mak and loved it. The beach is gorgeous (no rubbish in sight and who needs a pool when the water is this inviting), the bungalow huge, decorated well and very comfortable and the staff lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed our time, what more would you want??

We came over to Koh Mak for just one night from Koh Chang and really loved the place. The manager mr Chain was extremely helpful and set up some extra beds in the rooms and wished us warmly welcome even though we made the reservation just the previous evening before our arrival. We stayed at a fairly big hut called Ayutthaya and got one extra bed (for two kids) which fitted nicely at the room. Our friends stayed at the next door hut with three kids and didn't find the hut too small even with two extra beds. The bathroom was huge and nice, the room was comfortable and the terrace was really big and nice.
The surroundings are pretty and the beach was fantastic: white sand, crystal clear water and lots of fish in the water, so make sure you bring your snorkeling gear with you!
We ate three meals at the resort restaurant and were very satisfied. The service was good even though mr. Chain seemed to be the only one who speaks English (and he speaks it amazingly well) and the food was delicious. The breakfast was nothing spectacular but enough good: pancakes, french toast, bacon, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, thai food and cereal with coffee/tea and orange juice.
As we stayed only one night we didn't have time to explore the surroundings, but the hotel rents kayaks and mountain bikes. There was a big trampoline by the beach which the kids loved of course.
We will definately come back soon and stay for at least a week this time :)

I stayed the first week in May together with my spouse and adult daugther at AoKao. We enjoyed our stay at this place very much ! The bungalows, at least the ones we stayed in (Ayuthaya) where large, confortable and bright - not luxuary but relaxing. The large balcony is fronting to the sea site and bigh enough to follow the shadows move over the day till sundowner.
The food at Ao Kao is really great, we have been since many years for vacations in Thailand, but seldom find a place offering a wide range of really great local dishes on a resonable price. So ther where no reason for us to dine out some where else.
How ever, Koh Mak is a place where relaxing is on top and hotels are not on the 4 start up level. We did not seek for a luxuary place, but for a nice one where we just can relax without needing bars, large pools, discos or what ever.
For does complaining the beach was not clean or the hotel have no pool (I know the guys complaining about it, as I have seen them there) I just whant to say - yes right, but that the hotel has no pool is not hidden in any adverticement. The beach has the usual stuff floading daily in - but it was not just at the Ao Kao beach, it is a problem all over the long beach. The hotel staff cleaned daily the beach part in front of the resort. May they cpould make it better, but we are not at a 5star place and still in Asia where things are not that stricktly.
The sunbeds on the beach where a bid in bad shape and shall be replaced for the next peak season.
How ever, this is a place where you can and shall relax - It is a place with exceptional nice food and a very nice view over a huge and long really white beach !
I can agree with some comments of other guys here at Tripadvisor, that Chain and his team shall take a bid more attention on some maintenance issues (it was low season at our time there, so actually the time to make this things happen), and then it will becomes just one of the best spots on the island.

By the way, if you are a diver, close to the resort is the Koh Mak Dive Centre (just the road up 10 min walk). Marion and Steve from the dive shop are great persons and their team make your diving at Koh Mak just perfect.

We would go there again without any doubts !

Went here based on the other reviews, really not sure how they can be so positive. The beach is pretty but that's what Thai islands are meant to be like. Everything very tired, its like someone has stopped caring as you can see that once it probably was really nice. The beach has broken sun loungers, no cushions, very uncomfortable, no parasols, but evidence of stands, so they must have had them once. The bar/restaurant area tired looking, very back packer, I thought this was all normal at first as knew generally the island is less advanced that more built up ones, until we rented scooters and saw other resorts, with stylist bars, lit up trees at night, cut grass, and neat pathways, AND swimming pools. I like to swim in the sea, but the beaches are shallow, and there is a terrible litter problem, (coming in from the sea), so hanging by a pool is very nice. We had to move from here after a few days. The price was 2500 a night, which was very expensive for what you are getting, basically a beach hut with air con and a restaurant, on a beach that wasnt kept very clean, as the washed up litter needs removing every time the tide changes. We were there 4 nights and I didnt see a single person do anything to do with the upkeep of the place and you can certainly tell. Dont go.

Was here before in 2004. End 2010 everything looked even better. Ao Kao Resort had a nice upgrade. Huts are spacious including enormous bathrooms. We only paid 1200 THB since we did not use the airco. Breakfeast (great buffet with proper espresso, fresh pressed orange juice, hot and cold dishes) is included. The view and the bay are spectacular. Although we did spend most time on the best next door at Lazy Days Resort.
