Well, after reading the good reviews here my partner and I decided to give it a go. I will try and be brief: If you are a couple or seek tranquility, DO NOT come here. Kids screaming everywhere at all hours, it's worse than a kindergarten. There is NO wifi INternet in any of the bungalows, but this is a problem in many Koh Mak resorts: what you have to do is basically do your Internet work at the restaurant. I am sitting here right now to write this review.

The beach is AWFUL if you want to swim. Too shallow and far too many razor-sharp rocks scattered everywhere in the water. It's ok if all you care about is sunbathing.

The bungalow itself is fine, basic but clean. The restaurants is ridiculously expensive if you compare it to the many scattered restaurants along the 'main' road, for example. They do let us have bikes for 150 baht per day per person, which you will need if you want to find a better beach or a more affordable restaurant.

I would say it's ok if you are a family and want a place for your kids to run around. I would also say Koh Mak is not suitable for couples or those seeking peace. It's very family-oriented.

Room Tip: go for the thai style bungalows, they are the nicest and largest, with a nice wooden deck... we would have enjoyed it if it weren't for the screaming kids running around at night.

I was really looking forward to getting to Ko Mak after a few days on Ko Chang and from the minute we climbed into the pick up taxi I had a massive smile on my face.
The island is not big so for either of the boat drop offs it is only 10 minutes to Ao Kao. It's such a great place - The beach is just picture postcard perfect - not crammed with sunless and fruit sellers. There are a few places adjacent to Ao Kao if you don't what to eat there or in the evening when the tide is out you can walk 20 minutes up a moon lit deserted beach to get to another cluster of places to eat either on the beach or cutting up to the road to The Garden Cafe folowed by a bit of music at the Monkey bar. Just magic.
The room we had was the Talao Day style - we had an extra bed for kids and still had plenty of room. It has air con and fan etc. - this is not luxurious top end but it's really very pleasant and clean if a little dark. it had character and a large balcony and was beachfront so really for the money whats not to like?! It was nice not to have a pool for a change as it's always a struggle to get the kids away from it and off on adventures.
The breakfast was good - nice enough selection, everybody was well fed and happy and the coffee was decent. We only had a couple of other meals there and they were really nice - freshly cooked.
We hired motorbikes (from up next to the thai massage place on the road up the path from Ao Kao as they were cheaper) and spent our days zipping around empty roads and finding empty beaches. The island is just gorgeous - all rubber tree plantations and coconut plantations - NO strip malls and starbucks. There is a seafood restaurant (called Ko Mak seafood ) that we biked up to in evening on 3 consecutive occasions as it was so good - I think it warrants it's own review - it's well worth a visit.
We checked out a lot of other places as well but I still liked Ao Kao best in terms of location - there are lots of fancier joints but they were a bit cut off and for us Ao Kao struck the right balance. There is loads to do here - from archery (!) to volleyball - kayaks and bikes And even a big kids trampoline- all free. The girls who do the massages here are also really pretty good - much better than the average beach massage. They have a really nice family run philosophy here - there were a lot of families with kids and extended families when we were there as it was Christmas and I think this is who this resort is best suited to. A great family resort.
Incidentally the thai massage place on the road is also incredible, it's next level Thai massage and not for the faint hearted!!!

We stayed for 5 nights in the Lanna bungalows and throughly enjoyed our stay. We had been to Ko Mak 10 yrs ago and was pleseantly surprised at how little it had changed, all of the changes were for the better. We were lucky enough to discover the Ao Kao White Sands Resort after staying 2 nights on the other side of the island. From the beginning we were welcomed by all of the staff, a credit to them and the manager Mr Chain. The hospitality of everybody was above and beyond what was expected. We had a mini concert on our last night and the whole resort turned out, great fun was had by all. We are already planning our return.

We stayed at Ao Kao for 3 of the 6 nights we spent on Koh Mak and loved it. The beach is gorgeous (no rubbish in sight and who needs a pool when the water is this inviting), the bungalow huge, decorated well and very comfortable and the staff lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed our time, what more would you want??

We came over to Koh Mak for just one night from Koh Chang and really loved the place. The manager mr Chain was extremely helpful and set up some extra beds in the rooms and wished us warmly welcome even though we made the reservation just the previous evening before our arrival. We stayed at a fairly big hut called Ayutthaya and got one extra bed (for two kids) which fitted nicely at the room. Our friends stayed at the next door hut with three kids and didn't find the hut too small even with two extra beds. The bathroom was huge and nice, the room was comfortable and the terrace was really big and nice.
The surroundings are pretty and the beach was fantastic: white sand, crystal clear water and lots of fish in the water, so make sure you bring your snorkeling gear with you!
We ate three meals at the resort restaurant and were very satisfied. The service was good even though mr. Chain seemed to be the only one who speaks English (and he speaks it amazingly well) and the food was delicious. The breakfast was nothing spectacular but enough good: pancakes, french toast, bacon, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, thai food and cereal with coffee/tea and orange juice.
As we stayed only one night we didn't have time to explore the surroundings, but the hotel rents kayaks and mountain bikes. There was a big trampoline by the beach which the kids loved of course.
We will definately come back soon and stay for at least a week this time :)
