“A place to be”
Reviewed 16 January 2012

We loved the quiet place with airy bamboo bungalows. We didn't even need the AC. Everthing is in a splendid condition and it's good to return from one of the beaches to Bamboo Hideaway to enjoy the clean pool and the relaxed atmosphere. Martyn and Katie are wonderful hosts doing a great job and very caring about everthing. We loved the long nights at the bar with cool drinks and hot discussions.
We will come back for sure!

This has taken a while to get round to writing, possibly because I came back from this holiday so relaxed! The Bamboo Hideaway is an amazing resort. We stayed for ten nights in November 2011, and enjoyed every single minute.

The week we were there, Martin was hosting alone, and he was absolutely great with us. Although we were disappointed not to meet Katy... who had been so helpful in booking our transport from Bangkok to the island! Martin and his staff made up for it though, by providing a five star service, whilst at the same time giving the place a homely feel where we were totally at ease, and could really treat the hideaway as our second home.

The resort is stunning, especially when you know that Martin built every stick it himself from the bamboo, even the furniture. The rooms are well presented, practical, and clean and tidy! The bar area was comfortable and welcoming, and the pool was stunning!

The food was fantastic, probably our favorite part of the holiday. When we arrived on day one, we just asked to eat Thai food. After that, we genuinely didn't look at the menu for the whole ten days and everything was perfect! We ate like kings the whole time! Thanks must go to our chef for the week, Pe Toi, who was not only a genius in the kitchen, but was possibly one of the nicest guys I've ever met!

We had such a wonderful time in Thailand, and that is mostly down to the beautiful island of Koh Mak and the amazing Bamboo Hideaway, which I cannot recommend strongly enough! Perfection!

Stayed here for a week in January 2011 and it was great. Katie, Martin and Smith are impeccable hosts and we felt heartwarmingly welcome from the first moment.

Bamboo is not set right at the beach but up on a hilltop in the "jungle", some might see this as a setback but we found it really nice! We enjoyed scouting around the island on motorbike and coming back to this quietly set resort to chill in the bar, eat in the restaurant (great food) or just hang by the pool. We enjoyed many evenings and afternoons chatting with Martin and Katie who where always up for some interesting conversation :-)

The bungalows are nice and clean, we honestly didn't spend much time in it, just sleeping...
We really enjoyed our time at Bamboo and hope to come back soon, miss you guys!

Katy and Martin do an excellent job of maintaining an overall excellent retreat. They are engaging hosts and it is evident that the well-being and enjoyment of their guests is their #1 priority at all times of the day. They went above and beyond in fulfilling all of our requests and will no doubt do the same for you. Moreover, it is evident that a lot of love went into designing the bungalows (Martin is a carpenter) that are inhabited by guests: they are extremely comfortable to reside in for extended periods of time. They provide this comfort while also managing to maintain a rustic and adventurous feel. The restaurant/bar is also great: the head chef (whose name escapes me at the time being) is very talented. It's very easy to spend the majority of your time on the island at the Bamboo Hideaway. It's a great place for a family trip. It is also an excellent place for a couples' getaway.

Still travelling back - flight to Wales cancelled because of high winds. But carrying some great memories in our minds. 'Bamboo Hideaway' sounds a bit pretentious perhaps, but it is everything that anyone - and I do mean anyone: couples of any and all persuasions, families, lone travellers, groups - might want. It doesn't have a beach immediately to hand, like so many other places on the island but this made up for, and almost over-compensated, by the gregariousness and helpfulness of Martin and Katie. Nothing is too much trouble; everything can always be explored, worked through and worked out. If you want to go there - anywhere on the island or indeed further afield - Martin will sort it out, get you there and pick you up when you are ready.
The island itself is magnificent, with a range of great beaches and wonderful sea. We hired motorbikes for a day and that was enough to see all corners, though beware some of the maps where what look like roads are little more than footpaths. And those that are roads need careful navigation a lot of the time.
But you have to be tempted away from Bamboo Hideaway - the pool, the company, the excellent and well-priced food all make it rather easy just to 'hang around'. It’s almost too easy to stick around for one more beer, whether at lunchtime or later in the evening.
Criticisms? Well western Europeans don't really like having to put used toilet paper in a bin (as people have to do everywhere on the island), so one that is covered would be rather more pleasant (or should I say less unpleasant) than one that is open. And a laminated menu with a plastic spiral spine doesn't quite fit with what is otherwise an aesthetically fantastic environment - after a few hours, we thought that the term 'perfect combination' captured everything: a sense of being somewhere exotic and traditional, but with all the facilities 'needed' (expected) by the 21st century tourist. Except the menu!! Make it out of bamboo. Nearly everything else is, or some other form of crafted wood – Martin is a carpenter and his craftsmanship and vision shines through (though he probably wouldn’t want us to mention it).
Martin and Katie are both (very different, but complementary) characters who provide wonderful hospitality and with whom it is very easy and comfortable to relate, even with a bit of backchat and witty repartee. They are very welcoming to children and those without kids didn't seem to mind them being around.
Funny - though we were only there for six days, there was a real family atmosphere. Fantastic setting, where a bunch of strangers had a brilliant New Year’s Eve, and even a Kiwi didn’t always manage to have the last word!

Room Tip: There's only eight bamboo huts, so not much to choose from. They do have different outlooks ove...

With only 8 comfortable bungalows, the resort is a perfect hideaway. We stayed for six nights and we really enjoyed this cozy place. The use of natural material provides a peaceful and positive atmosphere with all the facilities. The restaurant and the swimming pool areas are very pleasant.
The resort doesn’t grant a direct access to the sea and is relatively isolated. But, as the island is 8 km wide, by renting a motorbike or a bike you can easily reach everything you’re looking for.
One of the reason we enjoyed so much our stay is the availability of the charming owners. Katie will give you all the tips you need and organise whatever you want. Martin will take care of yours “in resort” needs and desires. With both of them it was a pleasure to have a talk.

What a fantastic place after visiting all the other resorts on Koh Mak by Moped, this is defiantly the one to stay at!!!!!!!!!!!!
Martyn, Kati and Pe Toi couldn’t do enough for us and all other staff are very helpful and friendly.
We gave Pe Toi who was like our personal chief free rein on our meals for the time we stayed at the Bamboo Hideaway and enjoyed the best Thai food we had eaten in our 3 week stay in Thailand.
This resort is not directly on the beach but has a fantastic pool and only a few minutes away to any beach on the island, easy to locate with mopeds (on hire from the resort) or Martyn will drop/pick you up when required.
As the name suggest the 8 bungalow are individually built by hand with eco friendly bamboo and recycled driftwood (all with A/C and hot/cold fresh water, large beds with mossy nets(Never used).
These guys will book you all forms of transport to and from Koh Mak we booked a taxi from Bangkok to Trat and the Speed boat over to the island also other trips like snorkelling and fishing etc
My wife and I will defiantly return to the Bamboo Hideaway resort when returning to Thailand.
