Plubpla Koh Mak Retreat

Certificate of Excellence

We stayed for two nights at this beautiful resort, likely to be the best on Koh Mak island. The standard is very high and the excellent staff will do everything to make your stay as pleasant and enjoyable as possible! The lovely owners work hard to maintain the high standards and it really pays off. The value for money is incredible and the retreat is perfect if you are looking for a quiet getaway. You do need to hire a motorbike if you want to move around on the small island as there is hardly any other transport. However, on arrival the staff will happily pick you up at the ferry pier free of charge as well as drop you off again on departure. The resort is fairly small and consist of around 18 beautiful villas, a wonderful beach and an infinity pool. There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy the included breakfast (not buffet but a choice from a small breakfast menu), lunch and dinner. In the restaurant area there is free WI-FI. The restaurant closes at 9 pm and most people retire to their villas at that time for an early night. We can highly recommend a stay at this resort but a few nights are enough as there is little more than sunbathing/snorkeling and relaxing to do.

We arrived to Koh Mak with a prepaid accomodation at another resort. The other resort was OK but we wanted something different, so we went to the computer and logged in to Tripadvisor. At once we found Plubpla and the reviews were so fascinated that we immediately took a taxi and went to check the place. We didn't need long to make up our minds; we changed resorts the same day although we had paid for the first night at the other place!
Plupla in short: very friendly staff (family owned), beautiful rooms, superb pool (at least 15 m long), nice beach and views, great design and architecture. If we ever come to Koh Mak again, we know where to stay.

Travelling around the island on our motorbike we found this lovely, lovely place. It immediately raised a 'zen feeling'. We almost drove futher after a nice coffee shake, thinking this place would be far beyond our budget, but what a price/value! So we decided to move here the next day for one night only... And here we are, 7 nights further (with a short 3 nights brake on Ko Chang). Yes, we even came back to this paradise. Plubpla makes you feel special and it's the ultimate 'anti' burnout program. With special thanks to mister Chang en all the staff (especially you Beer!). One of us got sick (after visiting Koh Chang) and the staff was ultimately kind & caretaking. We can recommend this place to anyone who wants lovely food & peacefulness.

Excellent resort!! The best we have found so far on our trip to Thailand. Most personal care by the friendly staff, really laid back atmosphere, beautiful maintained gardens, stylish bungalows to stay in, great cooking by an inventive chef who finds his way also outside the menu when it comes to vegetarian dishes…what more could we have wished for? Real recommendation if you want to get away from it all....

Perfect place if you want to relax and take it easy for a couple of days. Its beautiful and VERY clean, friendly staff. But if you are the kind of person who wants 24 hour entertaintment and loads of things to do all the time this is not the place :)
You get very high quality, for a good price!

We went to the Plubpla for 5 nights. Booking was done easily through internet. And arriving there we were not disappointed, everything was perfect. The place is modern, quiet, very well designed and the food is very good. The rooms are spotless. Beach in front of the resort is rocky...but you've at your disposal the most beautiful swimming pool of Koh Mak and with a rented motorkike any place/beach of the island may be reached in less than 10 minutes (no traffic/safe roads). We had really wonderful time there and every wish/special demand was possible due to the strong and constant personal engagement of Mr Chang and his family. Our 7 years old boy was threatened as a little prince. We highly recommend you the peaceful island of Koh Mak and the lovely Pubpla Koh Mak Retreat. We will keep great memories of the place ...and of its people! Greet, Manu and Antonio (Belgium)

Beaches around Koh Mak are quite rocky. So if you plan to have spend lots of time swimming and around the beach, look elsewhere. Be also aware of Gnat or sea mosquitos that are all over in the water.
Koh Mak situates roughly between Koh Chang and Koh Kood. Koh Chang is more commercial due mainly to the ease of access i.e. ferry, road network, convenience stores, banks, etc. Koh Kood is the furthest south with handful of hotels/property with 1 hour boat ride and pre-paid package that exclusively give you room, meals and round-trip speed boat to the mainland. Koh Mak, on the other hand, used to be backpacker’s heavens due to the more laid back and no major piers.
Koh Mak today has changed a little, although the still the least developed, it offers broader range of accommodations nowadays as evidenced here at Phubpla.
Once step into Phubpla, there’s a word upscale all over the place. From the entrance to check in area, lobby (also dining area) all made up in style that greets you with the boutique feeling. All rooms are spacious though not all with full screen sea view. The way the rates work are simple, the beach front is the most expensive and the one in the back in the cheapest. For hassle-free stay, we decided to go with the package. The package price was also reasonable when compared with others.
With clean and upscale property and no no-kids policy, this place is more suitable for couples. Only moderate size swimming pool could not accommodate everyone during our stay. We were there on regular weekends and the property did not seem to have 100% occupancy. Still, guests were fighting for beach chairs. Beach was rocky so guests had no other choice but stay around the pool.
Staff or management consisted of two ladies. One work mostly behind the scene and the other do the PR. They were attentive at check-in but gone during guests’ conflicts.
Family run is not bad but amateur with no sense of service is bad. This property is relatively new. The first promotion they did was in last October with brochure of unfinished pool printed on the ads. Hopefully they’ll pick up skill along with time.
All in all, great place for Koh Mak that suits more toward couples rather family or solo. It’s romantic, it’s boutique, but low on the service side and rocky beach.
