The resort is build at the most impressive place on koh mak! The bar serves several drinks an Cocktails and has a awesome thai kitchen. There is a big privat beach streching over the hole resort. The rooms we have been in are have Aircon and a big bed. It is very close to a peer were some tours start from. We were really Happy staying hear! This resort is a very calm, relaxing place with just seven bungalows (the cheapest on the island) and really kind owners Michal and Riam. It's not an island like other because you don't find the night life like on the others islands but if you want to be cut from people you should definitely go there. It's really relaxing. In front of the bungalows is the sea which seems to be the best place on the island for snorkeling and also if you want to swim go on the right side of the beach and you will feel like in paradise. The only sound you hear is the sea and the jungle. The Thai food that Riam cooks herself is delicious. Definitely a place worth visiting, if you're looking for a quiet and beautiful place with very hospitable people.

Ao Pong Resort is tucked at the end of a short section of unmade road just to the south of Koh Mak’s main pier. The road has the smallest mini-mart in the world, a laundry service and a somewhat incongruous German-run steak house and bakery (with crocodile on the menu). We didn’t get the chance to try that out as we were only staying for two nights, but it looked worth a go.

The resort has a small selection of bungalows on a ridge above the beach giving views of the sunrise through the treetops. As it is East-facing you do lose the sun earlier than other parts of the island though. We were here in March and sunset on the western side was about 6pm, but it had gone from Ao Pong by about 4.30pm.

The bungalow choice is really just that of with or without air conditioning. We went ‘with’, but our first room’s AC unit had a condensation problem, so they instantly just told us we could move to the next room down.

Comfort-wise you can expect a spacious room that has been reasonably well put together, although there might be the odd tricky tap or loose screw on a bathroom shelf – nothing major though (unless you are one of those people who always expects five-star quality everywhere you go).

The beds are big and comfortable in that ‘very firm’ Thai fashion that Western backs sometimes tale a little getting used to!

Down on the beach it’s very private and big enough so that even if all the rooms were full there would be no ‘overlap’ between guests. Lots of hammocks, deck chairs and sun-loungers to choose from. The hammocks are either ‘shady’ or ‘sunny’ depending on where they are and what time of day it is – take your pick. The sun-loungers are exceptionally comfortable though.

There is a fair bit of fine white sand mixed with varying grades of coral-shingle, some of it quite sharp in places, so best wear sandles unless you have tough soles. Access to the sea is via one of two small ‘coves’ set between outcrops of volcanic rock. These ‘coves’ do still have quite stony floors to them, but once you are out past the end of the outcrops the sea floor becomes more sandy, with a few coral/rock outcrops to be aware of.

The snorkelling is quite good however a little further out because the trade-off against this not being a pure white-sand beach is that there is plenty of coral and fish life. The resort can even make an underwater video if you want a record of your undersea antics.

The bar/restaurant at the end of the beach has a good menu, although when we were here it was very quiet, so it was understandable that they hadn’t stocked up on all of the fresh fish. Tip here is to think ahead and if you want something like that then tell them at lunchtime so they can order in what you fancy. It’s worth trying out a range of the food because it really is very well cooked and presented.

There’s three hotel dogs, one of which you may find on ‘guard duty’ on your balcony some nights. Guard duty involves lying fast asleep right in front of the door chewing on a mango!

As ever, being on the edge of a mini-jungle environment you’ll hear a fair bit of nature through the night. There’s lots of bats in the trees out front early evening, some rather screaming creatures that can wake you with a bit of a start and the usual troupe of insects crawling around – although mercifully few biting ones that we encountered, a far cry from some of the other beaches where sand flies and mosquitoes seemed to be rife.

Overall service is very good indeed, and the owners really do whatever they can to make your stay pleasant. If you want a trip round the island then they will give you the guided tour and if there is anything else you want then just ask and they’ll probably come up with the goods.

It’s also worth noting that if you are ‘resort-hopping’ then most of the hotels will arrange transport for you if you let them know a little in advance where you are and when you want to get picked up.

Ao Pong Resort is a ‘peace and quiet’ option (definitely not a party place), so if quiet is what you want, then this is where you will get it.

Room Tip: Air conditioning is worth it unless you are on a tight bdget, in which case there is not much to choose from.

The ao pong is a quite little resort with only a few houses. We booked one Day in advance and was able to get a fan bungalow and an a/c bungalow. The owners of the resort are very helpfull, and did all they could in order to give us a nice stay. The fan bungalow was very basic! But it is aldo cheap compared to other resorts on the Island! But but!!! The location is terrible if you want to swim! We where expecting a White sandy Beach, but what we got was a Beach filled with rocks and waist! We even found broken glass at the beach?? Bad location - good people!!
