I have lived in SA for many years and on a recent trip back, to visit family, we decided to stay at the Halyards. When it opened it was known as a good hotel, and despite the many negative reviews online, we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, all the negative reviews were right. The hotel is well situated, but really badly neglected. We were told it is under new ownership, a church group now runs it. I think they should stick to religion, because the hotel management is not up to standard: examples-
During a big rain storm my roof leaked resulting in hug wet patches on the carpet and there was a river of water running down the walls!
The breakfast buffet was very limited and there were never any clean coffee mugs. One morning when we came to breakfast early we discovered why- the entire front desk staff and dining-room staff were having breakfast in the dining-room!!
There was one computer in the hotel lobby for guest use- we were never told that there was a charge for using it. At the end of our stay all our minutes had been itemized and we were charged!! There was a sign advertising wireless costs, but nothing about using the "guest" computer!! This is appalling considering there is no internet in the rooms.
The tv sets have 6 channels with such a snowy picture that it was hardly worth switching them on.
On the plus side, the staff were always friendly and always tried to help when there was a problem (the leaking roof was seen to).
If you want something very basic,at about a 2 star level, then you will be satisfied.
