“Clean and relatively cheap”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

We were looking for a place to spend the night in Pontorson. A lot of the B&B's were full or too expensive. This one is pretty cheap, but clean, nice service, decent French breakfast and great Wifi connection. Good to spend a night or two, but not for an entire week.

Stopped off here touring around by Motorcycle, it was OK, clean and tidy. The rooms were a bit small and the one we had was a bit noisy due to people going up and down the external staircase. The owner didn't seem all that welcoming, and dont think he uttered a word to us once we had checked in. It had secure parking for the bike and was in easy reach of Mt St Michel. There were a few restaurants within walking distance and the one we chose was really good. Dont think we would stop here again.

TRAINS NOT OPERATING TO/FROM PONTORSON

If going to Mont Saint Michel, using public transport and staying overnight, DON'T stay at Pontorson. Why? Trains from Paris stop at Rennes and you then need to take a Keolis bus from there that WON’T let you off at Pontorson.

At the end of April, 2014 when we visited the Mont with accommodation booked at Pontorson, we did not know in advance that work was being done on the tracks and the line from Rennes to Pontorson was closed. Not clear when it will be operational again.

This meant for us:
• A train to Rennes
• Then a 1 hr 15 mins Keolis bus all the way to Mont St Michel that WOULD NOT stop and let us off at Pontorson even 'though it goes straight through there and within 100m of our hotel.
• Then we had to turn around and get a local bus (another 15 mins) back to Pontorson to get to the hotel. It was only €3.10 but the irritation was the time taken in unnecessary travel and also extra wait time for connections.

Then, when departing Pontorson after our 3 night stay,
• the same thing had to happen in reverse with first a wait then trek by local bus down to the Mont; followed by almost an hour wait at Mont Saint Michel carpark (in the cold and the rain) for the Rennes bus connection (that then went back through Pontorson).
• We have written to Keolis Customer Service to suggest they make an exception to their "no drop offs" policy for travellers to Mont Saint Michel who are staying at Pontorson, just until the Pontorson train service to/from Rennes resumes. So far, they have not replied.

HOTEL AU JARDIN ST MICHEL NEEDS WORK

We are retired and have travelled extensively over 40+ years, staying always in budget accommodation.

+VE COMMENTS
* Room warm & quiet
* Non smoking room
* Clean sheets
* Fresh towels daily
* Free wifi
* A flat screen TV
* With prior request, kindly loaned us a hairdryer

-VE COMMENTS
* Room very tatty with serious peeling paint in toilet and minimal furniture giving the same effect.
* An odd inclusion of a plastic undersheet that crackled and made us sweat, similar to those used in hospitals to protect mattresses against wetting and soiling.
* No fan in toilet.
* No fan or light in shower
* Only 1 chair & 1 bedside table in bedroom (for two people)
* No garbage bin in bedroom
* Also no jug, mini fridge, tea/coffee makings, tissues
* No towel rail or hooks in basin area.
* No power outlet in the toilet/over the basin for the hairdryer where the sole mirror was positioned.
* At the start of a 3 night stay, we had 1/4 of a toilet roll. The next morning, we placed it on the toilet seat as a hint that we needed more. We returned after the room had been "serviced", no more toilet paper!
* No soap nor shampoo sachets, day 2

3. IN SUMMARY
In recommending to others, the prime test is always .... Would you go back and visit again? Our response .... NO!!

Spontaneously stopped in this small local restaurant outside of Mont Ste Michel and were pleasantly surprised with pleasant decor (homey like a French bistro in the 50's). Pizza Margharita was excellent and the beef bourgignon was terrific (melt in your mouth beef cubes and al dente carrots). Owner's daughter speaks functional English and was very pleasant. Recommend this restaurant.

I've been staying in hotels all over France for 35 years now, but this is the worst. Not only as regards the hotel itself but also as regards the rudeness and incivility of the owner and his daughter.
The hotel is a sort of 'battery farm' for visitors to Mont Saint Michel as added to the original small hotel building is a sort of 'motel' extension of small hutches.
We arrived at about 8p.m., and the smell of rancid cooking oil from the kitchens which coagulated around the outside dining patch ('area' is too grand a word) was truly nauseating. The diners were all jammed together on a tiny area of decking, which was supposedly the outside dining "terrasse", right next to the car park. The food looked distinctly unappetising, and so we ate elsewhere.
But the worst aspect is the rudeness of the owner. I speak fluent French, having worked in France for over 14 years, but I'd hate to be a foreign visitor here. His rudeness and incivility was by far the worst I've experienced.
This hotel should be avoided - unless you're absolutely desperate.

Having a property in the area I have visited many of the restuarants in Pontorson this is one that I will not be revisting . No mustard ( its actually next to supermarket so I think that could have been easily remedied),half the items on the menu were unavailable.

More or less good breakfast

Very poor room, very heavy staircases, the hotel seems similiar to American Motel 6/8, but there are no condition and you have no privacy
