Previous reviews had us reserved in our expectations This is our 6th visit to India in 6 years. We had delayed Hampi because of accommodation. We were extremely happy with this Royal Orchid. Our room had a huge comfortable king size bed with wonderfully soft pillows, was luxuriously appointed and spanking clean- as was the bathroom. A guide was arranged for us for Hampi (who was excellent with English and Information) We were given a warm welcome and invited to the Diwali firework display they put on. As senior travelers with some stomach issues more a la carte European food would have been appreciated but they did go out of their way to assist us and we felt would have prepared anything we requested- also packed lunch for us for Hampi Currently one of 3 planned restaurants is open. We felt when custom picked up (only been open a year) those other options would be available. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: The rooms encircling the inviting swimming pool are both large and , we were told quieter. Hospet is...

We stayed two nights before season started. Some of the staff needed some hints what should be done. Good food, especially the local food, clean rooms, quite elegant furnishing.
Nice clean bathroom, we had no problem with the a/c as previous guests mentioned.
Good choice in Hospet.

It was a great holiday spent at the resort. Except for switching of rooms twice due to technical problem in the air conditioning plant, we were satisfied with everything else. Service was excellent and food suited our taste buds. Finally, we moved to a room with a separate a/c, but with two single beds. They were under pressure in full occupancy!! It claims to be a 5-star hotel, but I would not rate it beyond a 3-star. They still need to go a long way to match the 5-starish luxury and service. We had an excellent time in the swimming pool with our 19-month old son. We were served customised food for our son. The surroundings are not that scenic. Of course, it has the benefit of closer proximity to Hampi.

Room Tip: Rooms or cottages along the pool side are good with separate air conditioners.

In USA or Europe this hotel would earn at best 2.5/3of5. The only thing holding it back from 5of5 (for its class) is the poor maintenance & lack of attention that is SO VERY typical in India - especially the smaller cities. So I split difference with a 4. For small-city India this is so close to being a real polsihed gem. (Is "in the rough" now) Good for 1 or 2 night biz traveler. Maybe fun Indian family outing???-has interesting pool/courtyard. THE BAD (for room 711): very loose/broken sink tap; stained & worn shower curtain & towels; slight odor to wet bath towels (bleaching would cure); bedside alarm didn't work for me; no clothes iron; floor needs a scrubbing; A/C blows on beds; low-railing balcony is death wish. THE GOOD: Staff very good for me (manager escorted us to room with bellhop); comfy beds/pillows that were actually clean & free of stains!; the lobby & resturant are nice & modern "Indian-chic"; penne arabitta was good from wide menu; check-in process complete with wet-towel, cola in stemware, and Bindi (forehead "spot") application as a welcome! (a memorable first for me); they prepared simple breakfast "to-go" in a bag for our 5:30am departure; water temp & bath fixtures good (except sink tap loose); mini-bar, complementary water & coffee/tea ample.
In summary: this place is certainly better than Hotel Maligi across town. For biz traveler I'd be surprised if you could do better within a ~200km radius. (This is better than Hubli hotels...) For leisure traveler, I wouldn't go to India (just joking)....wouldn't go to a smaller market with the expectation of finding sophisticated "luxury" comparable to large-market, Int'l 5-star hotels. happy/safe travels

Room Tip: If you can climb stairs try room across pool from main hotel. Don't know where noise is/isn'...

We stayed at the "Royal Orchid Kireeti" in Hospet for 2 nights while visiting the nearby ruins of Hampi. While we thoroughly enjoyed Hampi and wandering around the ruins we were rather less enthusiastic about the hotel, which failed to live up to its own lofty aspirations or to provide the relaxing weekend away we'd hoped for.

The hotel clearly promotes itself as a "luxurious" "five star" experience. While the infrastructure is of a decent standard - comfortable clean modern room with a/c, swimming pool etc - we found the whole experience rather frustrating - largely on account of the poor service & dishonest representation of their food & beverage options.

We arrived after a 6 hour drive from Bangalore and our first impression was quite positive. Reception was friendly and they provided us with a cold face towel & a soda. We were shown to our room (at the front of the property) and when we asked whether it was possible to move to the back of the hotel (away from the road and overlooking green fields rather than the rather unattractive town) our request was swiftly accommodated and we were shown to a room in what they call the "cottage area" at the back of the property surrounding the pool.

The room was a decent size, bathroom was clean & furnished with the hotel's own brand of toiletries and the balcony overlooked a big green field - a good place to chill out with a book...or so we thought.

It wasn't until we returned from an afternoon of sightseeing that we realised our balcony was shared with the room next door and that there were only a couple of chairs - which our neighbours monopolized both evenings. We decided to sit by the pool instead, but the three sun loungers (yes three - shared between 134 rooms....) and handful of chairs were all fully occupied. The same scene was replayed several times during our stay and we never did manage to sit by the pool with a book. (The photo was taken as we were heading out for an afternoon of sightseeing) Given the number of rooms in the hotel they could definitely afford to invest in a few more chairs both around the pool and on the balconies.

Having a room close to the pool also proved to be a mixed blessing as we were woken by shrieking kids in the pool before 6:30 each morning. Admittedly there is little the hotel can do about noisy kids (except restrict the opening hours of the pool) but the hotel itself also played thumping dance music in the pool area for most of the day & into the evening. Just before going to bed we dropped by reception to politely ask if the music could be turned down - which didn't seem to be an unreasonable request given that the pool area was in any case deserted and it was after 10pm. When they still hadn't taken any action after half a hour we called from the room - and then finally we just gave up and resorted to ear plugs. This was probably a wise choice anyway since the nearby train line generated a hooting/whistling noise ever 5 minutes from about 6am onwards. The hotel's proximity to the train station would presumably be a plus for those arriving by train. I can only speculate but perhaps the rooms in the main building are better insulated against the noise.

The hotel's website claims that it offers (and I quote) "a variety of food and beverage options with Echo-the 24 hour coffee shop, Ginseng, the Oriental restaurant, The Regal Garden – An Open-Air Garden Restaurant and Lounge with Local Delicacies, Mix- signature lounge bar, a pool side bar and rooftop specialty restaurant Twilight that serves mouth watering Indian delicacies"

Our experience was somewhat different:

On the first afternoon, we tried to get a late afternoon drink & snack. We couldn't get service outside by the pool, the Mix bar was closed and we ended up sitting in the empty buffet restaurant while a host of staff clattered around setting up for dinner. The veg pakora was quite tasty but it took them more than 20 minutes to bring two fresh lime sodas and nearly 10 minutes standing at the cash register to sign for the bill.

The pool side bar was completely deserted - no staff around & no drinks available for the duration of our stay.

The much promoted rooftop restaurant "Twilight" was closed or has not yet opened - it wasn't really clear but there was only one table up there and the decorating didn't look finished.

"Ginseng" was oriental in terms of decor only - when we asked to see the menu we were informed it just served the same Indian buffet as the adjoining main restaurant (!) More of an overflow area when the main restaurant ran out of seats than a separate restaurant.

"Mix" lounge bar - which had been specially pointed out by reception as they showed us around - was closed all day and didn't open until around 7pm. The room was almost pitch black except for a huge projector screen showing the cricket . A couple of smokers puffing away in the corner didn't do much to improve the ambience so we ended up skipping it altogether.

The open air garden restaurant was just the lawn at the front of the property as far as we could see - which had plenty of tables but no service staff. We tried to have breakfast there on our second day since it was noisy & crowded inside, but it appeared there was no service outside so we returned to the chaotic buffet inside.

So in fact despite the "variety of options" claimed by the hotel website - the only place to eat was the buffet restaurant where both breakfast & dinner was served. Although they claim to have an al-carte menu, it is identical to the room service menu & wait staff seemed somewhat reluctant to let us have anything except the buffet until we insisted.

The Indian dinner buffet was pretty average - fairly limited range of dishes - mostly vegetarian and all served lukewarm. What little meat was on offer (mutton) was chewy & full of bones. An ice-cream scoop and a "butterscotch ice-cream" label was tantalizingly set out on the dessert buffet - but no actual ice cream appeared. Drink service was farcically slow - on our second night we ordered a bottle of cold water, a beer & a pineapple juice and it didn't appear until after we'd finished our meal. The waiter was very apologetic and provided the juice "on the house" - but sort of missed the point that it was just no longer wanted or needed. Thank goodness it was a buffet or we might have gone hungry too.

The breakfast buffet was almost exclusively Indian options. The only "continental" options were some sliced watermelon & pineapple (still partially wrapped in cling film), DIY toast, mini muffins or corn/choco flakes with milk. On the first morning there were some grey hard boiled eggs but these disappeared the second day. Staff struggled to keep dishes filled so it was a bit hit & miss what was available - you could get jam or bread but not both at the same time. On the first morning there was fresh watermelon juice but on the second morning they'd reverted to a slightly chemical tasting packaged juice. Coffee was served by a member of staff wandering around - but he managed to ignore us until after we'd finished eating on both mornings. Tables were set with only a fork & spoon so on both days I had to chase down a member of staff to get a knife, before pinching a couple of napkins from a neighbouring table. On the morning we departed it took three requests to three different staff to get a bottle of drinking water to take with us. (There was complimentary water in the room on arrival but this was not replenished during our stay)

We tried to order an omelette (which appeared on the al-carte/room service menu) but were refused - breakfast is buffet only. Although we did not attempt to order from room service, given how "oversold" the other dining options were I am highly doubtful that some of the described options (bacon, brioche etc) would actually have materialized.

The hotel attempts to compensate for it's rather sterile atmosphere by putting on a traditional puppet show during dinner. While the kids in attendance seemed entertained, the high pitched whistle that accompanied the puppet show was extremely loud & irritating for anyone like us just wanting a quiet meal.

The hotel also claims a gym (one treadmill and a few weights) and a spa which had apparently just opened a few days before our visit. I visited the spa for a Balinese massage which was very professionally executed but the whole "zen" experience was let down somewhat by un-atmospheric surroundings (the massage was given in a small bare room with fluro lighting - I had to ask for the rather noisy wall fan to be switched off - the room for couples massages looked nicer with a big window & a view) and by the cleanliness of the changing & showering facilities (hair in the drain, previous client's disposable knickers lying in a puddle in the corner). The spa's towels shed fluff over everything – including me - which meant towards the end of the massage it felt rather like being rubbed down with sandpaper. The following day, the spa rang our room before 9am to ask if I'd like to make another appointment. In my book there is no excuse for ringing a hotel guest before 9am unless a. they've booked a wake up call or b. the hotel is being evacuated. Maybe they just figured that no one sleeps through the train arrival anyway.

We waited more than 15 minutes to check out as five staff flapped about inefficiently behind the desk helping the two customers in front of us. The traditional drummer who was greeting guests as they arrived was a nice touch in theory but the extra noise became rather grating by the end of our wait to check out.

Overall I would have accepted many of the quirks of this hotel had they pitched themselves as a standard modern 3 star hotel with an Indian buffet restaurant. It it their overselling of a "luxurious" experience with a variety of different dining options, coupled with a lack of staff training that lets them down.

I've rated this hotel as average rather than poor because the rooms & surroundings are clean, modern & comfortable and it would probably suit a family with young kids. There is very little else of an international standard in the area. If you're happy to sleep with earplugs in and wait ages to be served mediocre food it's a perfectly acceptable choice. For couples seeking a quiet relaxing weekend away - look elsewhere.

We were a group of 3 families with small children during the Independence Day weekend. The hotel rooms are very well done up (wooden flooring, nice bathrooms) and very comfortable. The service does leave a little bit to be desired especially when the hotel is full. The staff however are very friendly and make up for any inefficiencies.

For families wanting to visit Hampi, I would strongly recommend this place.

With a few friends after 2 days of wandering round the sights of Hampi we went in to the Royal Orchid for a nice dinner before we headed back to Bangalore on the train.

We had dinner in the Lobby from a restricted menu as it was 5 in the afternoon when we arrived. We had pastas, burgers and sandwiches which were very nice and around 130Rs each.

Service was a little slow, despite the fact we were the only ones in the restaurant, but we were in no hurry.

They also offer a swimming pool and brunch package on a Sunday between 1 and 4 in the afternoon which would have been nice if we had been there a bit earlier.
