“Best place in Santa Fé”
Reviewed 8 April 2014 via mobile

We checked 4 options in Santa Fé and we think "Anachoreo" is by far the best option in town: spacious rooms, quiet, all 4 rooms have excellent views, great breakfast, good/hot shower, delicious combodian food, highly recommended!!

Hartelijke groeten!

We stayed two nights in the place, and it was the best decision we could do it. The breakfast is fantastic and the views make it better. The food is really tasty. The rooms are huge and clean.Highly recommended.

We anticipated our stay in Santa Few would be the highlight of our trip, but instead it was the worst part. One room in the inn was being remodeled and we would hear banging late at night. Still not sure if it was working or something else. I wrote the inn to inquire about tours, but never received a reply -- figured it was a language problem. Upon arrival found out they were unavailable because the hosts vehicle was out of commission. Received no recommendations for other tours, but were handed a book with information. To our hosts credit, he did answer questions when asked about the information in the book.
Wrote the week of our stay to ask whether we would need to make reservations for dinner (the food sounded wonderful), but were informed that, despite that their webpage said that breakfast, lunch and dinner were available to guests, the restaurant was closed on Monday and Tuesday (the nights of our stays), but they would refer us to other places. On arrival we were told that, while we couldn't stay at the hotel another night, if we could find another place to stay (do most people go places like this without a reservation for the rest of their time in country?!!) we could eat at their restaurant when it was open). We even offered to pre-order and give an exact time, but were told 'no'. There were 2 other restaurants in town open (all closes during carnival). Ate at one the first night (Santa Fe hotel - really liked their ceviche and the fried chicken). The second night we were told about another place, which was closed. One would think that if you weren't serving food, you'd know where else was. This was not the case. Another restaurant had lost their cook somehow, and the restaurant from the first night was full to bursting. Markets in the area did not have food for self-catering really - but for food preparation. As we had no access to cooking facilities, this didn't work well. At least I can say I've had canned deviled ham, now. Yippee.
I was reasonably satisfied by the room, but the people we were traveling with thought theirs was a little dirty (dirt dirt). No cleaning of rooms during the stay. I was ok with that but for one thing. As toilet paper was to be disposed of in the trash can, it would have been nice if that had been emptied daily. I did note that the trash can in the public access toilet was completely full (and given that I only used it once during the two stays, and the only other person I saw go in was an employee, can only guess at how long it was since that had been emptied).
Breakfast was good.
The four of us came up with the description of 'lackadaisical'. It was almost as if we were interrupting something. It was carnival -- but given that our hosts knew everything closed down then, they might have been a bit more accommodating, rather than less accommodating. We were literally scrambling to find things to eat (and while going without might be a good thing for me, it wasn't what we expected to do) and things to do (coffee plantation closed too).
The bed was ok. Pillows thin.
If you go - find out exactly what is and isn't available prior to booking. Also, while I was not able to avail myself, I was told by one of our traveling friends that the masseuse was 'awesome'.

Room Tip: There are only four rooms. Might not want to locate near the kitchen, but our experience was that t...

Dear Sandra,

My apologies that your stay was not satisfactory. I noticed the restaurant information on our website was outdated and I have corrected it. We were very happy that Santa Fe hotel was able to serve you dinner on those days and glad you enjoyed their meals. Carnival is a busy time even in rural Panama, as many non-carnival lovers will flock to pretty mountain towns like Santa Fe. Many people take time off to spend time with their loved ones, or partake in the festivities in other towns. Therefore there were no guided tours available and some restaurants were closed. The email correspondence January 29 indicated you "might" wanted to go on a tour. But it was not a reservation.

Perhaps you are unaware of how popular our restaurant is when we are open. Consequently, we have to do a lot of stocking up and make preparations on Monday and Tuesday. The banging that disturbed you (for which I apologize) was probably the sound of frozen meat being cut and prepared. We would like to make exceptions and cook for our guests on the days that we are closed but it is not always possible. My wife and I made the decision to inform you on time: by email prior to your stay, as well as when you arrived. Insisting on an exception does make it hard for us to be accommodating.

I am pleased your room and bed was satisfactory, you enjoyed our breakfast and your friend enjoyed her massage. My apologies for not clarifying that room service is 'on demand' and included in the room rates if our guests require it.

We are happy to host you should you find yourself in Santa Fe again.

We stayed here for 4 nights and absolutely loved it.

The bedrooms were spacious, very clean and had a lovely bathroom.

The food was absolutely amazing, breakfast was delicious and so was the Cambodian food offered for evening meals. I recommend the fish curry - it was the tastiest dish I had in months.

The garden is gorgeous and easily enjoyed while swinging in a hammock!

The hotel is ideally situated to wonder around the local area. The hosts have prepared some info sheets on possible hikes to attempt - we completed a couple and the scenery was absolutely beautiful!

Fully recommended!

Thank you John for your wonderful review. My wife and I are very happy we were able to offer you such a great experience. The fish curry has become our signature dish, but we certainly encourage future guest to travel through other regions of our dinner menu as well :)

Beautiful views from this fairly new 4 room hotel. Outdoor seats and hammocks allow you to take in the hill side scenery and gardens. The on-site restaurant is popular and serves fresh tasty Cambodian meals. The included breakfast is delicious. Rooms are very spacious with nice bathrooms.

This small restaurant and inn (3 room) has fantastic views of the coastal Panamanian Caribbean mountain range, its cloud forests and valleys. This changes by the moment with the dances of clouds and light across the slopes and peaks. Sitting on the patio sipping locally grown coffee could easily become a full time occupation. This becomes even more tempting after enjoying a breakfast (full) or dinner which are meticulously prepared on order and served either in the small dining room or on the patio.

The inn was custom built by the current owner/operators within the last couple of years. A forth room is still being completed. The location is about 500 meters uphill from the Coffee Mountain Inn and the view here is probably substantially better than there. This inn is also further from the road and more secluded than the Coffee Mountain facility and other in-town options. From what we could see it also has more in the way of developed gardens. The rooms are large and the bathrooms equipped with a full baths and showers which have unique artistic ceramic tiling and hot water on demand. There are no wall decorations and furnishings are sparse, limited to a comfortable queen sized bed, 1 night table, a couple of chars and a table There are adequate hooks and hangers for clothing and towels, but no stands or chests of drawers on which to put luggage. The doors to all four rooms and the dinning room share the patio and privacy could be an issue for some if guests do not use the central entry through the dining room / reception area.

This place is the focus of this couples lives right now and it shows. The garden and building are well situated and show planning and attention. The couple have owned and operated two facilities in Santa Fe and know the area well. They seem to respect the community and this seems to be returned; important for foreigners running a business in a small town.

On the whole we enjoyed our brief three night stay and short visits with the owners and I would not hesitate to recommend it to travelers to this region. I particularly enjoyed taking pictures in the changing light and trying to capture images of the fast moving hummingbirds and giant bumble bees in the garden. In order to get a 5 rating out of me the road in would need to be a little more easily driven (we had a Yaris & made it over the rocks and through the mud without damage), the rooms more completely furnished and a little more noise dampening added to the rooms (we could here conversations 2 rooms away). These are things that will no doubt be worked out as the owners get the kinks solved and get into full operational mode for the coming tourist season.

I have no hesitation in recommending thi

Thank you Bruce for your charming and honest review. As you indicate we are aware of some of the deficiencies and working on improving those. Our carpenter just finished the remaining bedside tables and we finally found a woodworker artist to do our build-in closets. I am sure you will appreciate the end result should you come by another time. Too bad our impromptu jam-session fell on your last night, we would have loved to hear you play the guitar. Thank you for the pictures: patience (and skill) does pay. Have fun on your travels and Alláh-u-Abhá.

Sineth & Marnix are a lovely couple who have a gorgeous little B&B. It is very clean, beautiful, relaxing and they use fresh produce from the garden for their cooking. The included brekkie and Cambodian dinner at additional cost is the best food we've had in Panama. I would definitely recommend this place!

Make sure you book in for a one hour massage for only $15 at the property and also head over to Maria y Chon's farm for an organic lunch and tour of their property.

Thanks for the awesome experience!

Eva and Katie (Germany and Australia).
