“A Great Stay at Le Chardon”
Reviewed 3 October 2008

We recently stayed at Le Chardon whilst travelling through Burgundy. We were warmly greeted by Rebecca, and enjoyed a glass (or two) of the delicious local wine.

Our room 'the Chardonnay' was very comfortable, the en-suite had a great shower, as well as a bath to relax in.

We were invited to join Rebecca for a walk with her two golden retrievers up the hills surrounding the inn, and along the paths through the vineyards. The views were lovely, gentle rolling hills, vineyards everywhere, looking down on the little village of Chardonnay.

Afterwards, drinks and a delicious dinner cooked by Nick in the welcoming bar/restaurant, with a cosy woodburning stove. The food was very tasty, and we sampled a few of the local wines.

Breakfast next morning was very good - juices, croissants, cereals, home-made jams, fruits, yoghurts etc etc.

We would highly recommend Le Chardon, as a great place to stay in a lovely area with lots of interesting places to visit, we will return when we have the opportunity.

After leaving we purchased some wine locally, great value and very good quality.

Thanks Nick and Rebecca for making us so welcome.

If a nicer bed and breakfast exists in France, it would be hard to imagine. Rebecca and Nick are the friendliest hosts one could hope for, and extremely helpful, too, with orienting tourists regarding the wonderful local sights (the castles at Brancion and Cormatin, the religious and artistic sites of Cluny and Tournus, etc.) and the many fantastic vineyards in the area. The rooms are new, modern, and charming, and the restaurant is very good; the breakfasts (at individual, not communal, tables) are great and the three-course menu is both reasonable and tasty. We will soon go back for the third time this year with our five-year old daughter (who absolutely loves the place), and we hope to return many more times in the future.

This homely, friendly and inviting environment is one of Chardonnay's hidden gems. During our one week break in the sleepy village of Chardonnay we relaxed in the simplicity and laid back way of life after the hussle and bustle of the city. Staying in a nearby gite we soon abandoned home cooking for the culinary delights cooked up every night at Le Chardon. Nick and Rebecca have created an amazing mix of English and French traditions to create an outstanding business which genuinely makes you feel welcome. The cosy bar area is a delightful space with a warm feel on those cold nights with the wood burner adding the personal touch in the corner of the room. By day the restaurant catches the best of the light and there were many times when we found ourselves spending most of the evening in Nick and Rebecca's company. There are wonderful walks and cycle tracks surrounding Le Chardon and fantastic views across the endless fields of world reknowned vines. We made many day trips to the historic and picturesque villages and towns in the area and would recommend Chardonnay to anyone looking for some peace and tranquility. Le Chardon is truly one in a million and we will DEFINATELY be visiting them again next year.

Great experiences make for great holidays. Our experience at Le Chardon was fantastic. A great place to base yourself for touring the Burgundy Region or even crossing the border and visiting Geneva (about 1-2 hrs away). The rooms were excellent with top of the range bathroom fittings and the downstairs bar/restaurant area beckons you to linger longer and enjoy the cooking of Nick and the refreshing Chardonnays of the region. Judging by the large number of locals who eat and drink at the restaurant, something must be very special about Le Chardon and it's English owners. We were a group of four from Perth, Western Australia and would all recommend Le Chardon as a place to stay and enjoy.
In fact we (Sue and I) enjoyed it so much we are planning to go back for a longer stay in 2009. We will use it as a base to do day trips throughout the Burgundy region and see as much of this beautiful countryside as is possible.

Whilst passing through the village of Chardonnay, we stopped for lunch at Le Chardon. What a supprise it was to find it run by an English couple, Nick and Becca Harman, such warm and lovely people. They have rescued this very old local eatery with a full restoration. The bar/restaurant area is simple and very rural French, where Nick serves up his culinary masterpieses and Becca makes sure you never develope a thirst. The wine list is very good.
The rooms are so tasteful and supprising and very very comfortable.
My wife and I stopped for lunch, and stayed for three days. Nick and Becca are such warm and friendly people and so helpful. Only having four letting rooms in the hotel, allows more time for Nick and Becca with their guests. Le Chardon is a place where friendships are born.
We shall return.
Bernie & Anne.

I can highly recommend this B&B if you find yourself in the area of Chardonnay. It is located in the actual village of Chardonnay in the heart of the wine tasting region and was only opened in the summer of 2007 by its owners Becca and Nick. We were a party of 6 and on recommendation we stayed there for 5 nights from the 28th December 2007, there were also a couple from Holland staying there for the same period, apparently they have stayed there many times since it opened whilst house hunting in the region. The B&B has 4 double bedrooms but this adds to its charm as it allows the owners Becca and Nick to spend time making you feel welcome, we certainly felt like old friends by the time we left. Nick is an excellent cook and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the cost of the rooms, food and drink. The three rooms that we occupied were tastefully decorated and the bathrooms were modern with lovely power showers, greatly needed after all the walking. The downstairs is a restaurant for both guests, customers and locals, of which there were many because being English owners they remained open when the surrounding area closed down in the usual French fashion. This became apparent when we used to go out for a drive around the surrounding area and found that around 13.00 when we wanted to eat everywhere had closed or they would only serve coffee and cake as it was to late to serve a meal, so we ended up having to go back to Le Chardon, but knowing the food was good this really wasn’t a problem, however I suggest that you either have an early breakfast so that your ready to eat by 12.00 if you want to eat whilst out and about. The area is unspoilt with some pretty towns and I know where I’ll be staying the next time I find myself visiting this region of France again.
