“Tranquility in Wine Country”
Reviewed 1 October 2013 for a stay in September 2013

Chateau de Claribes is situated in the heart of the Bordeaux Region wine country about 40 kilometers from the city of Bordeaux. Claribes is owned by Nick and Helen, Brit ex-pats who have devoted themselves to running a winery. Meticulously trimmed grapevines lush with grapes march off in the distance as far as the eye can see. The gite, or apartment, is attached to the end of the chateau complex and has been restored and modernized without destroying its historical integrity retaining the tile roof, stone walls, and massive interior beams. The downstairs is an open plan with a comfortable seating area and bookcase filled with an eclectic collection of books on one side and a dining area and modern kitchen on the other. The itchen is equipped with a refrigerator, stove and oven, dishwasher, and separate freezer. Utensils, dishes, glassware, flatware, and table linen are furnished.

The Chateau is very rural and tranquil but only a couple of kilometers from the quaint and picturesque village of Gensac which has a small supermarket where you can pick up the basics such as coffee, milk, juice, and sliced-to-order cheese and jambon. There's also a wonderful boulangerie where you can buy your morning croissants, pastries, and baguettes; 2 boucheries, although we never managed to find them open; and a couple of restaurants serving rustic French food, particularly duck confit a specialty of the region.

Claribes is a destination in itself if you're interested in just relaxing, reading, or hiking, but it is also in the center of the Bordeaux region with many attractions within driving distance. Helen has thoughtfully provided a notebook filled with suggested destinations, town and city market days, and restaurant descriptions in and around Gensac. Places of interest we visited during our week stay include the villages of Pessac s Durdogne and Castillon la Bataille, Castle Rauzan, the magnificent caves of Lascaux (a two-hour trip but worth it), Saint-Emilion, the market in Libourne, the Sauternes region, the city of Bordeaux, Bergerac and a boat tour on the Dordogne, and Jardins de Sardy. Of course, wine is a major reason for visiting the Bordeaux area, and there are many wineries open for degustiation or wine tastings. You may get to taste seveal wines, and it is polite to buy a bottle afterwards. Don't miss Helen's wine tour of Claribes. She is very informative and interesting as you learn about the quirks and rules about producing wine in Bordeaux.

In short, Chateau Claribes is an ideal spot to enjoy the beauty and bounty of southwest France.

“Perfect!”
Reviewed 23 September 2013 for a stay in September 2013

we have just returned from a stay at chateau claribes. Helen and Nick were perfect hosts. Everything was just as advertised and we had a wonderful time. The house is in a lovely scenic area and close to the pretty town of Gensac. We particularly enjoyed the wine tasting and vineyard tour organised by Helen and sampling their lovely wines. The cottage is very comfortable and beautifully refurbished. Highly recommended.

Arrived late evening on Thursday to be greeted by Helen and shown the accommadation which was ideal for my wife & 2 x adult daughters. It was " kitted out " with everything required for our 4 day stay as we attended a wedding in the area. We relaxed in the mornings enjoying our coffee and fresh bread outside and returned in the evenings to sample their delicious Sav. Blanc and their fruity rich reds.Would recommend their house highly for being absolute spotless and ideal for a vacation in their region. 5 star stay.

“Beautiful, relaxing stay with wonderful hosts”
Reviewed 17 December 2012 for a stay in October 2012

We stayed at Claribes for a week in October 2012, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone - we have been singing its praises to friends and family non-stop! We were incredibly lucky with the weather, with blue skies and sunshine all week, but the cottage is so cosy that it would be a wonderful place to stay even if the weather wasn't kind. It is beautifully kitted out, and we wanted for nothing. And as others have said, Helen is a wodnerful hostess, and the family dog Belle really made our holiday.

The location is simply fantastic - close enough to walk to the nearest village, Gensac, with its small supermarket, butchers and bakers, but with uninterrupted views over the countryside. It was so peaceful and tranquil we found ourselves accidentally sleeping in most mornings! There is so much to do on your doorstep - Bergerac and St Emilion especially were highlights.

We would encourage everyone to do a tasting with either Helen or Nick - it was so interesting seeing the inside of the winery, and their wine is really very delicious. We managed to get quite a few bottles back in our suitcase, and fully intend to order some more soon. Indeed, we very much hope to arrange a return visit to Claribes soon.

“A glorious honeymoon in beautiful countryside”
Reviewed 21 September 2012 for a stay in September 2012

We just returned from Claribes. Helen and Nick were wonderful hosts - responded quickly and helpfully to all my emails when booking and provided generous, helpful advice throughout our stay on the best places to go and explore, without intruding on our stay.

The house was stylish and spacious (especially as we stayed just the two of us in the house) with private spaces and trees to lounge under (stargazing at night a treat!), backing onto the vineyard – and their friendly, family dog, Belle, for company. Claribes is in a tiny, peaceful village - but only 20-30 mins walk from Gensac a charming, sleepy French village - so you have the feeling of isolation, but are in reach by foot of coffee and baguettes or by car through beautiful countryside of hypermarches, sights, local food markets and shops. Longer day trips can take you out to the Atlantic coast for some seaside, though we were mainly happy staying local for picnicking, book reading and swimming at the local lake or ten mins drive from thouse down on the banks of the river Dordoyne.

We really had the feeling of having SW France to ourselves in this tucked-away corner. I'm not sure that I have ever been somewhere which is quite so peaceful to watch the season change and harvest spring into action: it is a real retreat.

Do ask for a tour of the vineyard while you are there, Nick's passion for his organic wine is infectious and you won't be able to resist bringing some home after tasting it! We had a glorious honeymoon escape - and encourage anyone thinking about going to book!

“Tranquility among the vineyards”
Reviewed 13 September 2012 for a stay in August 2012

Very well appointed and comfortable accommodation. An excellent place to stay if you want to get away from the hurly-burly of urban Britain. Well situated for visits to such places as St Emilion and Duras. The nearby village of Gensac has a very good supermarket, and has several good eating places. I would recommend Claribes to anyone looking for a place to stay in France.

“A wonderful house in beautiful surroundings”
Reviewed 21 August 2012 for a stay in August 2012

The house is beautifully decorated and furnished and is set in magical surroundings; the peace, quiet and tranquility are amazing. Helen is so helpful and friendly and made every effort to make our stay as good as possible. She gave us a fantastic tour of the vineyard and wine tasting. We spent a week here and both of us have never felt so relaxed. The house is lovely and spacious so we spent much time just relaxing and reading and cooking in the very well equipped kitchen. Eating in the garden that leads onto the vineyard was lovely. We also ventured into Bordeaux for antiques shopping, sunbathed and swam in a nearby lake with a sand beach and went to one of the numerous night markets in the area. You can do as much as you want or as little as you want here and still have a wonderful holiday. We loved it here and hope to go back!

Management Response
7 Oct 2012
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of the holiday house at Chateau de Claribes. We're so pleased you found your holiday relaxing and enjoyed the surroundings as well as the facilities in the house.

We particularly appreciate the suggestions you made about how we could improve the bedding and facilities to make a stay more comfortable during extremely hot weather - I think it was mostly around 40°C whilst you were here!. We have already provided the light weight cotton sheets - I'm sure this addition will provide more flexibility for bed coverings in the hot weather, alongside the summer grade duvets. We have bought electric fans to help keep the air circulating in the bedrooms as you suggested and we'll buy sun loungers for the garden as soon as they're available in the shops in summer 2013!

Thanks again for taking time to e-mail the suggestions - they're very helpful.

We very much look forward to seeing you again!
