During a recent vacation and family reunion in Bulgaria, we spent one night in Samokov at the Sonata Hotel. Arriving without reservations, the polite and friendly staff showed us several rooms that could accommodate our family of five. One room with a Queen, the other with three singles. The price was right, the rooms comfortable and clean. We opted for the additional fee for a Continental breakfast which was a simple fare of meats, local cheeses, cereal, hard boiled eggs, coffee, tea and breads. The hotel has a spa & massage facility, a small work out gym, restaurant and in the summer a wonderful little outdoor garden and sitting area. The outside temperatures were at -22c and snowing, so we appreciated the fact the rooms were warm, the beds comfortable and our overall impression of this small little family run Hotel were very good.

We've only stopped in Borovets once, and after discovering the Sonata & Samokov town we would not stay in the resort again. We discovered this hotel about five years ago in the Rough Guide and on My Bulgaria & have been going once a year since. There is a regular, if tatty bus, that runs up to Borovets every hour for 2 leva per person each way, which means we get to enjoy the skiing or hiking and come away for some peace and quiet in this great hotel.

Despite language difficulties we have always found the owners, their family & staff warm and welcoming. The room rates are good value for money, & they're always clean and well serviced. There's a mini fridge in each room to keep drinks cool. Some of the rooms have great views of the mountains, which with the heat of this year (at least most of the time), meant it was nice to relax on the balcony with a drink and watch the sun go down. Other rooms have jacuzzi baths which is particularly welcome after a day's skiing.

The restaurant is also very good value & very tasty. It has a good selection for omnivores, but if your vegetarian the choice is quite limited – though well worth trying. If you've not been to Bulgaria before, be prepared for the food to come when it's ready, rather than starter, main course and so on, and don't expect to always eat together either. We had lunch one day and I had almost finished my meal before my partner's had arrived, but in our experience that's not unusual anywhere we have been in Bulgaria.

The Hotel is easy to find and well sign posted - it is in the central part of the town, the signs for the hotel are clearly visible. Parking is free for the guests. The room was clean, tidy, sunny and very quiet- we slept really well. The restaurant is lovely too- very good food and good value! The staff were friendly and helpful. I would happily stay there again!

This is a lovely little hotel set back from the main road through Samokov. Family run, the owners and staff all were very friendly and tried hard to accomodate any requests and considering the language barrier, always came up with whatever you asked for.
From the start we are husband, wife, mother-in-law and two young children were picked up from Sofia airport using the hotels transfer service which at 70 BGN (£35) is very reasonable by the owner himself. On arrival at the hotel (which was an hours drive) we were greeted by the very charming landlady (whos English is quite good) and she gave us a choice of the available rooms. All of which were spotlessly clean, bright and each diifferent shapes and sizes. So we were able to pick which best suited us and the children. A cot was provided on request and much care and attention was paid by our hosts to ensure that it was comfortable for the little one. A television is in each room and although not the best for signal reception it was watchable with English speaking channels Boomerang for the kids, Discovery and BBC World News. The bathroom was very clean and we had a jacuzzi bath in our room, great after a days skiing!
The prices varied depending on which room but around 20 Euros each bed and breakfast is excellent value considering how much you would pay just up the road in Borovets resort.
The restaurant provided standard breakfast fayre in the mornings from cereals to a full English and always very nice. On an evening the menu gave a wide choice of local and traditional food. This was always cooked to a high standard and we never had a bad meal during our stay. Needless to say the prices were much cheaper (at least 50%) and the standard much higher than if you were to stay in resort.
Taxis up to Borovets which is about 10k further up the road were 15BGN (£7.50) eachway. This made the odd night out to take in the lively nightlife affordable whilst still getting away from all the noise. For those staying in resort, a trip down to Samokov for a meal in the Sonata would make for a nice change and the cost of taxis would be more than compensated by the lower prices.
Car hire obviously would be needed, we were lucky in that we have family who have moved from the UK to live in Samokov so were driven up to the slopes most days but car hire was available in town and when I enquired about it the landlord found out prices for me. But then offered me the hire of his own personal vehicle for only 20BGN not much more than one taxi ride! Apparently all ok and legal with the laws there. This was an amazing gesture which we gratefully accepted.
The spa centre, sauna and gym were a bit small but ok for a look, we did have a massage which also was fine for the price of just 30BGN.
Altogether a lovely little hotel that is owned and run by people who are really trying to make it a success and I have no doubt they will. I highly recommend trying it out before the crowds in Borovets realise how much they are being ripped off and discover Samokov.
I hope this helps you make your accomodation choice, this was our 5th visit in as many years to Borovets/Samokov.

Just returned from my latest trip to Samokov where I had the pleasure of again staying, as I have many times before, in this small but extremely adequate family run Hotel. I was as always been made to feel very much at home, as indeed all my family previously have. Nothing is too much trouble for both the proprietors and their staff. Conveniently situated just 1 hour travel direct from Sofia airport and just 15 Minutes from the ski resort of Borovets, which easily reached by bus or taxi. Eat competitively priced well cooked traditional Bulgarian food in the restaurant. I would highly recommend this Hotel for both business and pleasure.

I have recently had the pleasure to stay in this lovely family run hotel once again in Feb 2009.
My second stay, which by far is a more comfortable option than staying in the expensive ski resort of Borovets,
There is a local bus that you can use into the ski resort or take a taxi it is still cheaper. Eat in the Hotels' restaurant - typical bulgarian food and always tasty and reasonable price.

Hotel deserves it;s three start and is fantastic value for money in comparison to Borovets.
