Went with a friend and found cafe to be truly wonderful. Coffee was sensational and so was my chocolate filled eclair. Atmosphere was peaceful and just the place to visit with a friend for a chat. Seemed to be plenty of beautiful desserts from which to choose on next visit. Will return for sure!

It's like being in regional France. The French baking is sensational. It's standard fare when we entertain at home. Baking with love is so obvious in every morsel, whether eaten at Gateaux or taken home to be enjoyed later.

So let’s start with croissant.. in France they are not oily – in Australia they are – at Gateaux THEY ARE NOT. Enough said really, these guys bake like you are in France in every way possible.
If the great friendly reception or the whimsy of some French flags in the tree out the front isn’t enough to make you smile then the coffee, or hot chocolate, or the friendly staff will ..... and then you will “eat cake” ... surely if gateaux tasted like this those pesky peasants should have been happy with no bread ?
It’s quite simple – it’s all great, if you like crepes they are superb, if you want some small cakes to finish a special meal at home, this is the place to buy them, if you want to practice your French before you go again, this is a nice place to do it 

I visited Gateaux having purchased a Living Social deal.

The staff are absolutely delightful. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and the deal was explained to us.

Despite the deal being for either a coffee or a hot chocolate, the staff were more than happy to make it an iced coffee and a peppermint tea.

The croque monsieur (like a toasted sandwich with bechamel, ham, and cheese, with a side salad) was not bad, but somewhat rich. Depends what you are used to eating I suppose.

We were then able to choose either a cake or pastry (which we were kindly allowed to take home). We chose a lemon meringue cake and a chocolate raspberry mousse cake. Both were absolutely delicious.

I don't know that I'd bother with their lunch items, but their cakes are fantastic, and as already stated, the staff are lovely.

Owners delightful, staff helpful and pleasant. Best croissants I've had anywhere in Melbourne and the desserts available are to die for! Trained patisserie chef tell you anything?!! Coffee is Di Manfredi (which is my favourite). Devonshire Tea available on weekends-scones are light, crispy and delicious and they make their own jams. Kitchen is clean as a whistle and bathroom is too. They have occasional special events and offer conversational French classes too. If I had one critcism it would be the bench seating being too high for the tables, but all in all it's a very pleasant experience.
