“Not just a game reserve...”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

We were looking forward to Africat because of the work they are involved in, and to our delight found ourselves upgraded to the Bush Camp - something we had considered but discounted because of the cost when booking our holiday. It was luxurious and a magnificent way to end our trip. Everything was great and the passion of the staff and guides was evident in all they did. Some people feel Okonjima is a bit Disney, but there's real purpose to the work they do here and that is the difference. I'm no fan of lodges where big cats are "baited", but Africat has a clear mandate of rescue and rehabilitation and that is the key difference. We would happily go back - the main camp sounds lovely but two nights in the Bush Camp was very special.

Room Tip: If you can afford the Bush Camp it's worth considering - seek out any possible upgrades!

Okonjima reserve has several types of accommodation, which seem to be all covered all by this "Okonjima Bush Camp" tripadvisor heading.

We stayed in "Okonjima Main Camp" for 2 nights. We stayed in the "view room", which was very spacious and had an excellent view on the savanna with the grazing warthogs. The room had tea/coffee making facilities and a fridge. The bathroom was very spacious too, with a separate toilet. We parked the car just behind the bungalow, which was handy. Food in the camp was very tasty. There was a free WiFi in the main area.

On the first afternoon after our arrival, we did the cheetah tracking drive. With the help of the electronic tracking device, it did not take long to find a mother with three cubs, who were resting on the road. In the evening we went for a free walk to watch the nocturnal animals from the hide and we were amazed to see the porcupines and the jackals. The following morning we did the leopard tracking drive. Since with leopards spotting one cannot leave the car, there was a lot of off road driving. The first leopards (a mother with cubs) that were tracked were on the mountain so we were not able to see them. Luckily another group that morning managed to track down one male leopard in this 20 000 ha reserve. So eventually we also tracked the same leopard, followed him for a while until he got too hot and lazy and just lied down and did not care about us any more. Our tour with the guide Jonas continued in the afternoon to the AfriCat clinic and the education centre and finally we also went to see three cheetahs placed in a small reserve. They can't be released into the nature any more as they never learnt to hunt and have to be fed. Our active stay in this camp finished with a night drive with Jonas, spotting an owl, spring hares and many sleeping antilopes. Jonas was a very good guide, he knew a lot about the animals and was also a skilful off road driver.

Our second day was booked on all inclusive rate, so all our safari drives were included and we did them in a small group.

We are glad we stayed 2 days and did all the activities. We spent 4 nights in Etosha but it was only here where we managed to see cheetahs and a leopard, and also some nocturnal animals. It was a nice end to our holiday in Namibia.

Okonjima main camp (Africat Foundation) was the first stop on our Namibian self-drive safari and it was a great introduction to the abundant wildlife of that country. We were able to see both cheetah and leopard thanks to good guides and, of course, the radio collars. A highlight was the night hide where we saw porcupines and honey badgers. We stayed in a garden room and, as others have indicated, those rooms are getting a bit tired, notably the sliding bathroom door that protested loudly at each movement. That said, it was very comfortable and well appointed. I understand these rooms will be used for tour guides next year and all the guest rooms will be view rooms. The staff were all very courteous and helpful even reorganizing tables for us when we wanted to dine with another couple we had befriended. It was a pleasure to help support this organization which is doing so much to protect the big cats.

We spent two nights here and could have stayed longer.
We stayed in the main camp which I understand are being converted to be used by guides. We found the room very nice and actually liked being near the lodge.
Our guide Martin was wonderful and overall the service was great and everyone was friendly and attentive.
Would definitely go back and stay longer.

Okonjima is not to be missed. Wonderful accommodation, great service. The thrill of tracking the cheetahs and leopards with knowledgable guides and finding out more about a fantastic charity with a great philosophy.

We had stayed here before and had been upgraded 8 years previously to one of the newer rooms. This time we were in the garden rooms in the main camp which were really a little tired so I would recommend paying a little extra for the better rooms. The lodge was full - dinner a well organised if corporate affair served at mixed tables. Staff were excellent and the leopard tracking drive was fascinating by committed and well informed staff. If you're visiting Namibia and simply planning to 'do' Etosha then this is well worth a visit on the way.

A fantastic place to finish our trip. We were upgraded to the bush suite, absolutely marvellous. service and food were all excellent. Our guide was experienced ,it took him only 30 minutes to find a leopard with a cub. It is easy, every leopard and cheetah has a collar with a radio transmitter. Very ugly. At night we did not take the porcupine drive, we were to tired. The next day cheetah’s “on the menu”. Also easy. But we would love to return to Okonjima one day. Next time we will stay 2 nights. Radio transmitter in a collar is a very old-fashioned technique. Shoot a small chip under their skin. Very effective.

Room Tip: the bush suite. It costs an arm and a leg, but it is worth.
