Cheap natural delicious drinks. Best poncha we drink in Madeira. When you buy the drinks you get also peanuts which are well made and crispy.

A wonderful place to visit.
We were brought here by a local and tried many different types poncha which were all freshly made in front of us.
The bar is not modern or aesthetically pleasing but it is worth going to for the experience.
The poncha comes with a tub of monkey nuts. When you eat a monkey nut the, apparently appropriate, thing to do is throw the shell on the floor. This took practice, I kept aiming to put mine in the bin!
Be warned - After 3 ponchas I was well and truly tipsy, it is strong stuff but absolutely delicious and a world away from the poncha that can be bought ready made in bottles.

Poncha or rum punch is the traditional drink of Madeirans. The Taberna is the perfect stop for this drink. Rustic and truly Madeiran, you will not regret stopping in for a poncha!

This Taberna is very well known in Madeira. It is mentioned in guides and recommended among locals.
"Poncha" is a local mix made out of rhum, fruit juices and sugarcane honey. They serve them with passion fruit, orange & lemon, and tangerine juices. Depending on the fruit juice, the rhum's alcohol content is different: 40% for the passion fruit and 50% for the orange & lemon.
They make the poncha on the spot, with freshly squeezed juices, and offer peanuts to munch while having the ponchas.
The staff is very friendly.
