Estancia VIK Jose Ignacio

I was in Estancia VIK last year and so impressed I wanted to show it to my wife. This place is unique and impressive . The owners have taste and they show it. But also build wise it's quite astonishing, starting from the hidden huge underground garage to double glass Schuko doors.
Unfortunately the second time service was far away from expectations and such a unique place . It looked more like a group of students where running the place, nice but not really knowledgeable. I found out by accident this second trip that they had a gym as no one bothered to tell.
The restaurant kept us busy with the exactly same menu for all 3 nights. Being there with small kids restricted our options to go out in the evening , so we where happy not to stay longer, especially as the food was good but not really great.

Leaving the place was a bit chaotic as no one was even there to say goodbye. Definitely the management needs some improvement.

Never less If you go to Uruguay this is one of the finest most unique hotels to go.

Hotell; absolutely stunning architecture with personality and carisma. Great to have all artists designed interiour.
Service; excellent! Inpressed by Young students From BA taking care of us. Great to have the possibility to utilize plays vik for bathing and lunch.
Rooms had great views over the pampas cows and horses. Enjoyed good ridingtours to the lake. Saw LOT of birds.
Tried polo on Their polo Fields which i highly reccommend.
Starters for dinner was poor for that price. Main course mainly Lamb and steak was excellent. Fish so and so.

Lots has been written already about Estancia Vik but it would be wrong not to add more words of praise for what is a stunning property and unlike anything I imagine you will find anywhere else. The building itself is gorgeous and the communal areas are amazing. We were fortunate enough to be upgraded to the Master Suite Daglio which meant we were on the first floor with even more impressive views from the wraparound terrace.

The service is just faultless and every member of staff genuinely makes you feel as if they want you to be as at home as possible and it works.

The only things you really need to know are the practicalities which are that it is relatively remote...20 mins drive to Jose Ignacio and 45-60 mins from Punta del Este...but doesn't somehow feel isolated. Plus it is not a hotel in the traditional sense in that there isn't a proper restaurant or bar as it much more like residing in a huge luxurious villa and whenever you want something a member of staff is there to bring it for you.

Breakfast is more than generous with plenty of fresh fruit, cold meats and cheese and yogurts with cooked options available if you want. We didn't actually have lunch at the hotel but dined twice and on both occasions it was excellent. There are only 2 choices for each course but sufficiently varied that we didn't find it a problem and since we were there slightly out of season, it's possible that in high season there is more choice. The wine cellar is fabulous and with tons of choice at reasonable prices. We also had a minibar fridge in our room with soft drinks and enough space to store things we bought.

Because we were there in Spring many restaurants in Jose Ignacio were closed during the week but we found enough options to eat our 3 times, including one evening in Punta del Este.

This is a really unique, special, welcoming, friendly, comfortable and luxurious place that you should visit if you are lucky enough to have the chance.

We spent about a week at Estancia Vik last March. We had a fabulous time and can't wait to return.

The website does not do justice to the property. It is simply stunning. Fabulous setting, with rolling green hills and rivers in the distance. A magnificent grand house. The rooms are all incredibly well done, to the smallest detail. Each is different. We had the opportunity to see most of them and each is like a small story board. Each is a bit like a mini modern museum. Staff at the hotel could not be nicer or more welcoming. It is very much like traveling to a friend's home. Nothing is too much trouble, recommendations are plentiful and you get the feeling they want you to enjoy your time with them as much, or more, as you do. They are all very proud of the property, as they should be. Max, the manager, is very professional. We did not see any details over looked. Daniela is warm and welcoming.

Breakfast is relatively simple, but good. Outstanding fresh baked banana bread and jams, great coffee. Cheeses, hams, etc. They will make eggs or whatever else to order. We had the parilla lunch one day and it was excellent, a big spread. Lots of fun and very interesting to watch the parillada being prepared and cooked. Dinner one night also was very good, though selections are limited. The pool is a good size. The other outdoor spaces are all very well done, the grand living room is something you would like to take home with you. It is the sort of place which, if you want to relax, you can check into for a few weeks and call home. Internet service was fast, free and reliable. Bottled water was left in the room day and night. The bedroom we had was large, with comfy beds, a great bathroom and and sliding door that opened up to the grounds of the Estancia, as every room on the ground floor does. The rooms on the 2d floor have sweeping views. Every morning we would awake to the most beautiful horses right outside our door. I mean ten or twenty feet. Just munching, sleeping, or relaxing. The cows also came by to visit. We had some great horse rides through the grounds and saw many other animals, darting by near and far. There is a well stocked game room on the property.

Location wise, you are about a ten minute drive down to Jose Ignacio. It is an easy drive, though at night the road is not lighted. That is not a big deal. Of note, as you drive out of the hotel at night you pass dozens of cows and horses (the healthiest and happiest cows and horses we have ever seen) to get to the main gate that connects to the road to town. As the headlights from the car shine on each animal you get a terrific sight of them simply sleeping, resting, relaxing and then turning to look at your car as you pass. It is very cool. Each night when we returned to the Estancia they were like a welcoming committee. Very memorable. We thought Jose Ignacio was the best location, town, in the PDE area. It is very small but has a terrific vibe. Like a small European beach town. The beach is very nice, wide and open, you can rent chairs and umbrellas. In mid March we had excellent, warm beach weather and swam in the ocean. La Huella, the famous restaurant there, we thought was excellent too. We ate there a few times, both lunch and dinner. Expensive but excellent quality, and atmosphere. The restaurant has a very different feeling during the day versus the night. There are a few other restaurants in Jose Ignacio but, out of season, as mid March was, many are closed. The town really has an incredibly short season. Yet, with a rental car, which you need, it is easy to get to La Barra, etc., for dining options. In PDE there are many more restaurants, we tried just a couple. But we did have an outstanding chivito in PDE at La Pasiva, one of the best sandwiches we've ever had anywhere. Travel wise, we flew to MVD and rented a car there. The drive to the hotel is under two hours. Easy highway. In fact, all of the main roads are excellent. Uruguay, the parts of it we saw, really is like the Switzerland of South America. In terms of architecture, the homes in and around Jose Ignacio are something to see. Very impressive. The area is booming. It looks like there is a real estate office on every corner.

In short, if you are thinking about the hotel, just go. We had wanted to combine the beach and an estancia. Those are incredibly hard to find. By leaps and bounds it is the best option in the area. They have also just finished Playa Vik, which we had the opportunity to see just as it was being finished. It too was very impressive. Huge rooms, excellent design, an infinity pool out of a travel magazine and a location right in Jose Ignacio. We will be back.

We stayed at Estancia Vik for 3 nights and 4 days. The place is truly one of a kind. Twenty Uruguayan artists filled this boutique hotel with a plethora of art coming from diverse artistic backgrounds and styles, and then the owners and a curator made this incredible place a very comfortable and unique place to rest and enjoy. Each room is truly a work of art.
We enjoyed riding in the super friendly horses around the estancia with the very professional Fabio who guided us around.
The general manager, Maximiliano, was extremely warm and professional, he gave us a tour of the place and took the time to help us find restaurants and sites to see. Daniela was excelente with all her support, as well Gonzalo, Lorena, Marcelo and Nenina. All of them were super competent, friendly and always ready to offer great service.
Waking up and seeing horses next to the windows of the room, or looking at the stars in the middle of the night and breathing an incredible pure fresh air was an incredible relaxing and soulful experience. It is one of the best boutique hotel experiences in the world.

We stayed here for 1 night in December in the Trujillo Suite. While our room was great & it is hard to complain about the grounds or facilities, the hotel was somehow missing a bit of character & warmth - it felt like a huge resort plopped down in the middle of a massive, sparsely grown field - while the service was mixed & the dinner we had was very disappointing. It is worth trying, however, as it may grow into itself more over time.

The hotel's rooms are built on a large scale, with high ceilings & large outdoor spaces. Somehow this serves to magnify the empty feeling in its corridors, perhaps because the surrounding landscape is also huge & quite empty, with no hills or mountains to serve as contrast, & no plants grown around the hotel itself. On the other hand, this means that the pool area is spacious & open to a wide sky, while at sunset one can see past horses grazing all the way to the sun setting over the sea, which is beautiful.

Our room was spacious, with a huge comfortable bed, good subtle lighting, walk-in closet, & large bathroom with big soaking tub & separate rain shower. A very nice touch was the sliding door which opened directly onto the hotel patio, facing west, so that we could sit in the patio chair or even lie on our bed & watch the beautiful sunset. I would definitely recommend requesting a west-facing room if you like sunsets. The huge nude paintings on our walls were very graphic, which some might find uncomfortable. But in general, we loved the artworks scattered around the property.

The central pool area is spacious, but there aren't enough deck chairs. There is a small gym. The free wi-fi service worked well in our room as well as at the pool.

The service was mixed; all of the staff were friendly, but some weren't very helpful, while others were overly familiar. We decided to eat at the hotel the night we arrived, because we were tired & had been eating out for days on end. The dinner we were served was paltry in terms of portions & completely unmemorable in terms of content. To be fair, we had not given them advance notice that we wanted dinner, but on the other hand, they could have just explained that there wasn't much available in the larder; we would have gone out instead. There is a large wine cellar, but the selection of wines contained therein was very thin. On the other hand, the lunch we had the next day was quite good, with a delicious set of grilled vegetables, though the salad & pasta were just ok. The breakfast was alright, not amazing. They do have an excellent selection of local teas though. I guess the upshot of this is that they expect guests to largely eat out, as there are many good restaurants in the area.

Overall, in 6 weeks of travelling around South America, this was not one of our favorite hotels. But if you are planning to go to Jose Ignacio, it is worth staying in for a couple of nights, especially as there don't seem to be many (any?) alternatives in this category in the area.
