Sanctuary in the Cove
Reviewed 8 July 2013

We had our wedding and reception at Sanctuary during February 2013. Despite getting the only rain in the middle of a drought it was a perfect day. Bruce was helpful at all times and even had a good supply of nice white umbrellas just in case.

The venue couldn't have been better and easily accommodated the 110 people present. We hired an 18m X 15m stretch marquee that fit perfectly in front of Cove Cottage. The cottages were great for the Bridal and Groom parties to get ready in and were useful accommodation for selected members of the wedding party.

The garage was suitable for the excellent catering we received through Food at Wharepuke who came out from Kerikeri.

Overall it was everything we could have wanted in a venue for the type of wedding we had planned. We got many positive comments from our friends and family who attended.

Our second visit to Pohutakawa cottage was as perfect as the first. The cottage is extremely well equipped right down to fluffy white bathrobes and the important husband essential - SKY sport channels! The private water front situation, accessed via a long drive through beautiful grounds, makes self catering a pleasure. We brought most supplies with us and bought the remainder at the smallish well laid out supermarket in Cooper's Beach (the staff here are friendly and helpful), only 15 minutes walk from the property. Historic Mangonui and its famous wharf fish shop, old hotel and good cafes are ten minutes drive or an hour's walk away - the walk along beautiful Cooper's beach and over the hill to Mill Bay is rewarding. If you like deserted beaches take a picnic up to Matai Bay (Karikari peninsula) on a fine winters day. Thanks again to our friendly, helpful but unobtrusive host, Bruce. We are already planning a return to launch those kayaks.

Four nights in February were not enough. Delightful cottages - both are good - and really well equipped. Relaxed and welcoming host. Good location for exploring the north of Northland - don't miss the Karikari peninsula if you like beaches to yourself.

We stayed last year for 5 nights and after thoroughly enjoying our experience, we booked for 7 nights this year (February 2013).
We just love this place and have already booked for another week in January 2014. We stayed in the Cove Cottage on both occasions.

What we really like about it is that :
- It is located on a quiet cove that is rarely visited by anyone else (between Coopers Beach and Cable Bay)
- There is no road noise whatsoever
- There is no surf noise as the cove has calm conditions prevalent in most weather situations
- It is just 25 paces from the lounge across the lawn to the water's edge at high tide, just step off the grass and onto the strip of sand and one more step into the water
- You can walk 150 metres straight out from the cottage when the rocks are uncovered, throw in a fishing line and catch legal sized snapper
- You can paddle around the cove at high tide in the two kayaks provided for each cottage and even go a couple of hundred metres up a small creek, at the eastern end of the cove which is surrounded by mangroves, this is an amazing experience
- You can take a row boat out a few hundred metres and fish in more inviting spots for that night's meal, oars and an anchor are provided. The owner will even take you out fishing for 3-4 hours and provide all equipment (at a cost of course)
- It is always fascinating to watch the tide come in and go out over the rocky ground in the cove and it has a sort of a wilderness feel about it
- The fabulous water garden is a delightful spot to take a few nibbles and some liquid refreshments to and relax in "tropical paradise" like surroundings
- When you feel the need to go off the premises and do something else, there is a wide range of opportunities available
- Coppers Beach and Cable Bay are barely 1 km away and are both superb sandy swimming beaches. Coppers Beach is lined with pohutukawa trees along most of its length which provides shelter from the summer sun.

Both cottages have a great view at high tide but we prefer Cove cottage due to its proximity to the part of the cove that still has water in it at low tide.

Pohutukawa cottage is closer to the small stream that you can paddle up at high tide. You can park your car right next to this cottage and it has a dining table and six chairs and is slightly more spacious than Cove cottage.

Cove cottage is slightly smaller and does not have a dining table and chairs inside (there is outdoor table and chairs though) but does have a breakfast bar, a huge corner spa bath in the bathroom and views of the cove from both bedrooms, lounge and kitchen. We usually eat dinner in front of the TV at home so no dining table as such, was not a problem to us. The Cove cottage carpark is about 60 metres away from the cottage itself and is reached by a short "bushwalk" through the garden. The owner Bruce is only too happy to help with any luggage.

Both cottages are up to the same high standard inside and are tastefully decorated, clean, comfortable, have nice views of the cove and have all the amenities you will ever need on holiday. There is SKY TV (sport but no movies) and there is a stereo player (take your CD's and MP3 discs) and DVD/VHS player and some DVD's provided if you feel the need to watch movies. Both cottages have outdoor furniture and gas BBQ's so come along with some nice steak to cook like we did.

I played golf at Kauri Cliffs and Carrington (fantastic courses but go on a calm day if possible) and Bruce can get you a discount at both places. My wife drove the golf cart at Kauri Cliffs (she is not a golf fan) and thoroughly enjoyed that and the special lunch in the lodge that followed!

There is currently a two nigh minimum stay and after you have seen this place, you will understand why this is necessary and you won't want to leave in a hurry! It would be a great place to stay anytime of the year if you don't really care too much about swimming in the sea.

Must stop writing now - cannot wait to return in January 2014 for more relaxation in the wonderful sanctuary!!!!

This hidden sanctuary was the perfect weekend escape for my partner and I. Quiet, beautiful and romantic, with water coming up to the edge of lawn. A great place to unwind and enjoy nature with a BBQ and a glass of wine watching the ocean! Recommended for couples looking for something unique. Beautiful Coopers Beach just around the bay and perfect for swimming. Thanks for a lovely weekend.

Private, peaceful and relaxing. Stunning views and a beautifully appointed cottage. 2 Kayaks were fun to use....but it was very muddy underfoot....take water shoes! Maybe not the best place for swimming (if that`s what you`re looking for) but if you just want to relax and look at the sea this is perfect! Also, the large gardens attract lots of bird life which we enjoyed. The kitchen had everything we needed with an adjacent sizeable dinning room. The bedrooms and living room were very comfortable. Just wanted to stay longer!

We spent two nights here and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Bruce was very welcoming and made us feel at home in his very special slice of Coopers Beach.
The two private beaches are either side of his private home and both overlook the cove. Each are extremely private and are fully self contained with kitchen, laundery etc. ... A home away from home!
We were there for too shorter time to use the kayaks and fishing dinghy but will hopefully be back to enjoy during another stay.

Room Tip: Each Bach is very private and have specatcular views but I think The Cove would have better swimming...
