We stayed for 2 nights in a 3 bedroom apartment (Spurway) and this place was ideal, Fiona greeted us and was an great host, very friendly and helpful with a lot of local knowledge. The apartment had every conceivable thing you would need and more, it was like home from home. The beach is a stones throw away down the steps and the views from the 2 balconies out over the bay delightful. Would highly recommend these apartments, the only complaint I have is that we didn't book to stay longer, would love to go back in the summer.
Thank you Fiona for making our stay memorable.

Friendly welcome awaits, plus a bottle of wine and some goodies. We were upgraded from the studio to the 2 bedroom appt. WOW. Fantastic balcony. Fantastic views over the ocean. Greenery and flowers abundant. You do need a car to get to anywhere. Right on the beach so calming sea waves to lull you to sleep after a lovely sunset. Helpful owners. Fantastic stay and would LOVE to go again and for longer. (For ever!!)

We stayed here for 4 nights 2 weeks ago having booked months ago. Lived up to every expectation and more - appartment was superb, loacation on the beach and near to other activities. The price for what you got (lots) was also excellent and far better value than other places we stayed in that did not compare. Could not recommend too highly, and if back again would be an automatic choice.

Anne appeared on the deck on our arrival, with a warm welcome - and it set the tone for our entire visit to Coopers Beach. The weather was warm but iffy, and she felt that the studio apartment which we had booked would be too small for us if we were trapped by bad weather - so upgraded us to a superior apartment on the first floor, with amazing views over the Bay, regardless of the storm clouds on the horizon!

The suite was huge, clean, with tasteful decor and every mod con known to man (or woman), and magnificent views from every window. We slept (very comfortably) at night listening to the sea crashing on the beach below, and woke to the generous breakfast hamper supplied by Anne and Ted. That had included a bottle of wine which we had polished off the night before. They invited us to join them for canapes and more wine the following evening!

Staying at By the Bay is more like staying with friends (who happen to have excellent taste, and a penchant for attention to detail), and it is a real joy to have found them via Trip Advisor. Thanks to those who pointed us in their direction. We were only sorry not to have been staying longer. (And the sun came out on our final day!).

By the Bay is better than its name- it's right on the beach at Coopers Beach with the most stunning views of the bay.
The accommodation is fabulously well-appointed; every mod con and consideration for a guest has been thought of.

We found By the Beach to be a fantastic place to use as a base for the far north - we did a day trip to Cape Reinga from here; played golf at the fabulous Carrington golf course and had a great meal; had fish & chips the next day from the famous Mangonui - 5 mins drive- we ate this on our deck watching the boats on the sea, listening to the waves gently lap, and the people stroll along the beach. You could also drive down to Paihia and explore Russell from here very easily.
For our family with 2 teenagers this was spacious and very comfortable accommodation; but if you are travelling as a couple there is a room for you too. Of all the places we have stayed this was a stand-out, comfortable and spacious and so we had to get onto trip advsior and let others know.

Our brief stay at 'By the Bay' over New Year was wonderful. Kay and Charles are warm and generous hosts (Anne and Ted were away during our stay). They even invited all of their guests down for dinner on New Year's Eve and a lovely time was had by all. At midnight, we watched fireworks being set off on the beach below.
Having arrived in Northland towards the end of our 4 week tour of the North Island without booking accommodation ahead, we (my wife and I) were extremely lucky to find a three night gap due to a late cancellation. We paid NZ$340 per night inclusive of GST (Goods & Services Tax @ 12.5%), which included a complimentary bottle of wine, and the fridge was stocked with basic breakfast goods on arrival.
Our apartment, 'Spurway' (No. 1), was spacious (for the two of us), spotless and very well equipped, consisting of a small laundry room, kitchen, lounge/dining room, hallway, bathroom and double bedroom. A single bed was occupying the hallway but there was still plenty of room. The kitchen has all the appliances you would expect, and shortly after we arrived, a new espresso machine appeared on the doorstep! A selection of games (chess, draughts, backgammon, etc), magazines, DVDs and videos are available. The large balcony adjoining the lounge overlooks the rear of the property, the huge deck and the beach. We didn't see inside any of the other apartments, but there are larger ones suitable for families of 5 or more.
You couldn't ask for a better location, with a short flight of steps from the lawn down to the long sandy (few shells, no pebbles) and quiet beach, lined with Pohutukawa trees. There are kayaks and a boat available for those who want to explore the bay from the water.
A short drive away, The Galley restaurant and bar in Mangonui serves fine food in a relaxed atmosphere, and we liked it so much that we went back again. Mangonui also boasts the 'World Famous' Mangonui Fish Shop which seemed to be doing good trade whenever we passed, although we didn't partake ourselves.
A 2 hour drive gets you right up to Cape Reinga at the northern tip of New Zealand, although stopping on the way to see Ninety Mile Beach (via a suitable access road) and the massive sand dunes at Te Paki is well worthwhile. (Note that the last 21km to Cape Reinga and access roads to the beach are unsealed, and that rental cars are generally not insured to drive on Ninety Mile Beach itself. Plenty of coach tours are available, though.) Sand tobogganing down the sand dunes is highly recommended (NZ$10 per board for one hour if you don't have your own), though walking back up is very hard work!
A 40 minute drive away at Ahipara, a 3 hour quad biking tour (with Tua Tua Tours) passing through Kauri gumfields and more huge sand dunes was definitely a highlight of our holiday.
We wish we could have stayed longer, but couldn't as we had to head on back to Auckland to fly home to the UK.
Overall, very highly recommended for couples or families looking for a relaxing retreat.

Just returned from a 4 night stay at By the Bay and loved every minute. The hosts, Anne and Ted were very hospitable and made us feel very welcome during our stay. The winter package included a welcome basket of wine and nibbles which arrived in time for us to settle on the balcony and watch the sunset. The basket also included breakfast goodies including bread and fresh coffee. One evening meal was also included which was cooked by the hosts and brought to our apartment, Anne's cooking was fantastic! The accommodation was easy to find from the main road and enjoys a fantastic position in a cul de sac where the garden meets the beach. The balcony stretched the length of our one bedroomed apartment from which we enjoyed uninterupted views of the bay. The apartment was home from home and had fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities, lounge with TV, DVD, video and hi fi. The beach was accessible from the garden and the shops were either a walk along the beach or a short drive away. Should we return to the Northland we would definitely return to the By the Bay and would have no hesitation in recommending these apartments.
