At first I could not quite get over the price of this place, but you are really paying for the secluded location and privacy. Hard to comprehend for a person like myself from Hong Kong the size of this place except that at 6000 acres, this place is 35x the size of Ocean Park in HK, 1 of our largest amusement park, shared by only 24 rooms /suites of guests. To really appreciate this the quad bike ride is a highlight and a must, to see the various gannet colonies, splash through riverbeds, explore the different corners of the working farm & see the stunning coastlines. I'm not a golfer but another way to explore this property is to take the walks, I tried 3 of the shortest walks: the lavender trail from the lodge through a lavender field, pinetree forest to an ocean cliff (40 min each way), the walk to the black reef gannet colony for solo time with the enchanting birds (3 hr roundtrip), or the hour each way hill top walk.
What I really enjoyed:
- Excellent tasting menu utilizing the best local ingredients- best of the 3 J. Robertson lodges.
- No check in
-Lovely charming room with heated bathroom floor, suite 8 was at the end of a row of suites which I liked for the added privacy, room had a superb view of the main lodge, the lake, the lavender field, pines, rolling hills, & the ocean (ie though views were not as amazing as Matakauri).
Room for improvement:
- the room was very clean but I never ended up using the bathtub as there were hair follicles in the tub on multiple nights... kind of my pet peeve with hotels I guess ...
This was not an issue at Matakauri nor Kauri Cliffs.
