Forchheim is not the fist place which comes to mind when one lookes for a place to stay in the area.
However (if one avoids the horrid looks of the industrial areas which crowd the town), Forchheim is an ideal spot for staying and exporing.
The Kaiserpflaz has a looong history. it actually predates the Castle of Nuremberg.
Before th clever burghers of Nurenberg bribed the Emperor by building him a pretty castle, Forchheim was a town for large conventions of nobles and on two occasions in the early 900eds kings were elected in Forchheim.
The Kaiserpfalz which one can visit today is not the medieval building, though some remains exist. todays building is the prince-bishop’s palace from the 14th century.
This year a new muesum has been opned just a few steps away, which gives insight into the workings of the impressive fortifications.
