“Unbeatable price, quality and service”
Review of Au Vieux Duluth

Been going there for years & Tasso (Manager) offers the best price, food quality & service of any restaurant on the West Island. Great variety- meat, fish, chicken.., fresh, BYOB & excellent service, all the time, every time. Puts others in the Vieux Duluth & Casa Grec chains to shame.

For the fisherman who lived in Greece, who slammed it & called it the McDonalds of "Greek food", OK its not a 100% authentic, back home, on the dock Greek resto. On the other hand were in DDO, Canada, not on the docks on the Greek island of Sifnos. "Fresh figs with honey & wine or fresh fruit with honey dip..", give me a break!!! For the rest of us, who aren't pseudo historians of Greek cooking, this particular resto is by far the best of all those out there. You said it- " ..they have modified the original flavors, tastes and ingredients to suit local preferences."

It's at the end of our street so no need to cook. It's what you would expect and no surprises with a nice decor.

Au Vieux Duluth calls itself a Greek restaurant. Well, actually, it’s not. It’s actually a chain (franchisee-driven) restaurant serving stuff that has become ‘Greek’ by endless repetition. Here’s what I mean. When you think of Greek food you think of meat, salad, rice, potatoes and bread. In other words, quantity over quality. This isn’t Greek food. This is the Greek food cliché.
The problem with Greek food is that it’s so ubiquitous. The world’s oldest cookbook was written by (the Greek) Archestratos in 320 B.C. That’s a lot of time for menus to be respected, modified and mangled. Check a good Greek recipe book and you’ll see things you’ll never see at Au Vieux Duluth: dolmades, avgolemono, stuffed calamari, chicken & olives or lamb sausages with tomato sauce. For dessert Au Vieux Duluth offers a baklava but how about other Greek desserts like fresh figs with honey & wine or fresh fruit with honey dip?

The problem is that Greeks have opened restaurants around the world and, over the centuries, they have modified the original flavours, tastes and ingredients to suit local preferences. So who’s to know what is really Greek? I’m a little different. I used to live on the Greek Island of Sifnos and every day my food came from whatever was available from the sea or the land (or mainland Greece). In fact, I fished every morning with my friend Nickolaki and I knew what would be on the plate that day there on the dock.
Sure. Go to Au Vieux Duluth in Dollard or any of the other locations. It’s as reliable and predictable as McDonald’s. It’s cheap and you can bring your own wine. Just don’t call it a ‘Greek’ restaurant.

We visited this restaurant last weekend after hearing that they were offering a special on the scampi for $15. It sounded good however, the plate was taken up with rice, potato wedges and lettuce - not even any tomato or cucumber - just lettuce! And trying to remove the tiniest amount of scampi from the shells was a challenge. The taste was great, but hardly filling. The only thing we got full on was the bread, rice & potato.

A group of friends met for lunch. There is ample parking around the restaurant. We all ordered from the lunch menu. The main platter comes with house salad, rice, home fries, soup and hot beverage. Dessert is extra but the price is reasonable. I have tasted better food at other places but the staff is friendly with attentive service. We enjoyed the baklava with hot herbal tea. It had an inviting ambiance that we stayed past the lunch hour. We enjoyed our lunch outing.
