Stone Willow Inn
Ranked #7 of 7 St. Marys B&B and Inns
Reviewed 26 August 2013

The Stone Willow has large, well lit rooms. Our room was clean, had a small fridge, and the sink was outside the bathroom, which is very useful for two people. The continental breakfast was good, if not stellar. There is cereal, baked goods, including home made muffins; yogurt, make your own waffles, mainly melon fruit salad, and good coffee. Considering it is included, that's pretty nice. The deal breaker for us is that our room had a communicating door; and it was like sharing our room with another couple. We could hear their discussion of when to leave for the show, hear big yawns, hear the tv game show, etc. That is unacceptable. They were not having a party. This needs to be fixed, or we would never stay in such a room again. Not all rooms have communicating doors; we asked. Unfortunately, they were full up, so we couldn't change. The heavy duvet on the bed, while luxurious, was too hot for us. Simply by asking, it was changed to regular sheet and blanket. Very good service. The air conditioner is fairly old and loud. Really too bad about these faults, because otherwise the place is a real find in this area. St. Mary's is also called 'Stonetown', and has a couple of blocks of beautiful old stone stores downtown. There is a great little booklet, very well done, to guide you on a walk. (You will see the original 'Eaton' store! And it's not quite who you think) There is a really nice 13km nature trail on old railway right of way which is a great walk, and you can do shorter sections. It is convenient to Stratford, about 15-20 min. away on good road. We would definitely stay here again, but only if guaranteed a room without communicating door.

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms with communicating doors!!

Stayed one night. The room was large with two Queen size beds and lots of amenities. The room was impeccably clean ( I make a point of checking under the bed and along the corners.) We did not eat at the restaurant but did have the complimentary breakfast which was a little disappointing. It was interesting to watch the reaction of other guests as the arrived for the breakfast. Over all a great place to stay.

We seemed to be the first couple to use the Samba Days gift coupon for a one-night stay at the Stone Willow Inn. Our king size room had a single red rose, some home made truffles and a bottle of wine waiting for us when we checked in. The coupon included dinner as well. We had a couple of drinks at the bar before dinner and enjoyed chatting with the bartender on what St. Mary's has to offer visitors. We did go for a short drive to check out the town but it was a sweltering day so we decided to stay indoors. Dinner included appetizer, entree and dessert. Oh.. did I mention that when I said it was my birthday while we were sitting at the bar, one of the chefs brought out a treat of chocolate pate with peanut butter mousse, chocolate torte and whipped cream with raspberry sauce - decadent and yummy! I had the three beet and orange salad, hubby had the roasted watermelon and buffalo mozerella salad. I ordered the 6-hour braised lamb with the cherry marsala glaze; hubby ordered the coconut chicken with strawberries.. both were deeeelish!! Since I'd already savoured the chocolate treat earlier I skipped dessert but had a couple of spoonfuls of hubby's lemon ice cream and coconut tuille. It was great to know that the food was local and fresh. The staff were very efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. The breakfast was adequate although the pastries seemed stale.. after the great dinner I supposed I expected some home baked fresh pastries. If anything, I would have liked to enjoy a pool and wonder if that is in the works for the future enjoyment of the patrons.

I am overdue in writing this review. We have stayed at this hotel two times now (Sept. 2010 and Aug. 2012) for the Stratford Festival. It is about a 15-20 minute drive to downtown Stratford, but for us that was worth it given the price and availability of rooms. You'll definitely save some money over staying right in Stratford and there's plenty of free parking in Stratford so that was never an issue either. The hotel rooms are a nice size, very comfortable and clean. The hotel staff have always been friendly and helpful. The free breakfast is a nice bonus and pretty decent, too. Overall, we are very likely to continue using this hotel for our Stratford Shakespeare Festival visits.

Had the pleasure of staying at the Stone Willow Inn in St Mary's during a recent trip to the area. The staff is always there to assist and the free breakfast in the morning, though it is a bit small, serves the purpose. The restaurant has great meals. If you go there make sure you hit steak night. The chef cuts the size of steak you want right at your table and you pay so much per ounce. Get the tenderloin, you can cut it with a fork almost. Also try their potato/bacon chowder, as it is the best I have ever tasted. I look forward to staying there during my trip in April this year. See you then. Keep up the good work.

My fiancee and I stayed on a Saturday night in January 2012 in the winter using a group buy voucher. I was curious to see the stone architecture in St. Marys and this place seemed like a romantic place to stay. It was quite nice. We had a jacuzzi, and the bed was quite nice and comfy. The room itself was large and clean. The restaurant had all you can eat steak that night and I stuffed myself silly. I recommend this place.

We just stayed for the night; it was a good option near to Stratford. I can just tell you about the room, which it was spacious and clean. But, on the not so good side, there was no heat in the bathroom, so it made difficult to even want to get a shower!
As well, we didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the restaurant since they closed at 9 as well as the bar so we had to drive again (we had spent the day with friends in Stratford) to get fed! The continental breakfast was limited.
