Altura is a small town of located in the mountains of Castellon, near Segorbe. It is famous for the Sanctuary of the Holy Cave (Santuario de la Cueva Santa), which is located 12 km from the town. One has to go down stairs in the cave to see the sanctuary. Inside is a small relief of the Virgin made of plaster that was made by San Bonifacio Ferrer, the brother of San Vicente Ferrer. The legend is that a shepherd took refuge in the cave and left the image of the Virgin. A hundred years later another shepherd slept in the cave and the Virgin Mary appeared to him in a dream and told him where her image could be found. The image measures 20 cm by 10 cm and shows an old Virgin.
