Mirissa, a curved shaped small beach town located in the Southern coastal side of the tropical island nation “Sri Lanka” can be named as one of the best beach cities in the world. Untouched by many, particularly by the locals Mirissa is a perfect getaway where you could have a laidback relaxed vacation.
The beach and the sea itself is one of a kind during the season (November to March). The beach is sandy as ever. The sea is calm and quiet and the water is clean and clear. There are no dangerous waves at all that makes it a wonderful place to swim and dive. You can walk out into the water for about 25 meters before the water becomes waist deep. The sea in Mirissa is naturally a safe heaven and it makes much safer with the life guard watch points situated.
It’s a wonderful feeling to watch the bright sun rise in the morning and the breathtaking sunset in the evening. The colorfulness of the sky and the sea will certainly ease your mind and soul. Having a chilled beer or a cocktail while enjoying the atmosphere is a norm practiced by many.
Hotels to stay
There are plenty of beach hotels (From star class to budget) just by the beach and finding shelter would not be difficult unless it is overcrowded during the season hence recommended to make a reservation in advance.
Dining / Food
Dining would never be an issue in Mirissa. All the beachfront hotels in Mirissa operates their own sea food restaurants / Bars in the evening until around midnight. The entire stretch converts in to a food court with bubbly lights and some with a romantic outlook of candle lights. Grilled or BBQ fish / Lobster is a dish that you should try no matter what!
Apart from the delicious sea food dishes there are many places across the road that offers typical Sri Lankan rice and spicy curry or you could even try the ever famous Koththu Rotty.

Whale and dolphin watching
Whale and dolphin watching is the most popular attraction of the town. Mirissa is one of the hot spots in the world for blue whales and sperm whales. Blue whales are thought to be the largest animal ever to live on Earth. They reach lengths up to about 100 feet and weights of an amazing 100-150 tons. Flocks of dolphins roaming around are also a common sight in the Mirissa sea.
The journey through the Indian Ocean takes around 3 to 5 hours starting at about 7.00 am in the morning from the fishing harbor of Mirissa. The boats are well equipped with all the modern facilities and safety kits and friendly crew members who have experience of battling the sea for many years. Tea and breakfast is also provided by the boat as well.
Surfing is an extremely popular activity in the beach town where it has attracted surfers from all over the world. You can rent surfing boards from the hotels and even get a few surfing lessons as well. If you are a diehard surfing fan would recommend going to Weligama, a bay just 1.5 KM away from Mirissa (5 min drive or 15 min walk).
Snorkeling and Diving
Even though Mirissa is not highlighted as a Snorkeling and Diving area it does have an amazing colourful coral reef and beautiful fish of its own. If you have the passion of snorkeling and diving why not garbing the opportunity of exploring the hidden wonders of the Mirissa sea? Give it a try, you will be amazed!
Partying and Clubbing
Mirissa is not a crazy party destination as neighboring towns Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna. But it does have a very few parties during Friday and Saturdays that goes until the break of the dawn.
Apart from enjoying the Sea, Sun and Sands of Mirissa you could visit the Yala national park ( 2.5 hours drive), Galle fort (45 min drive) and few historical temples in and around Mirissa.
Mirissa is a perfect getaway for the young and old whether, it’s for fun, tranquility or romance. The ambiance of this beach and its hidden treasures, friendly and genuine hospitality of people would give you the experience of a life time where you would want to visit there over and over!!!
