Arrival in the Dominican Republic

As soon as the plane lands in The Dominican Republic and the doors open, you will know you are in the Caribbean by the wonderful smell of the heat and humidity.

The first stop is the Immigration area where you purchase your Tourist Card for $10 each (or if you have one, skip this stop) and turn in your Tourist Card and show your Passports. Have these ready, it'll save a lot of time.

IMPORTANT: Highly Recommended to purchase on line to avoid line and not deal with cash on arrival! Everyone (except Dominican Born, Legal Residents and citizens of Argentinca, Chilie, Peru, Uruguay and Ecuador) must purchase a tourist card which costs $10 in cash per person (children included). You can buy this as you enter the immigration control hall which takes a lot of time or it can be purchased in advance on line for $10 USD at https://www.dgii.gov.do/Tturistaweb/O....  Just print it out and you are ready to go, no names or signatures needed. Then you turn it in at passport control.

After going through Immigration, get your luggage, and then head to Customs. Customs seldom stops tourists, but if they do cooperate with them. Then look for someone holding a sign with your Tour operator's name on it and they will direct you to your bus, transfer or pre-booked van. Taxis are also waiting for you outside of Customs.

Airport porters will try and carry your luggage for you - a firm "NO Gracias" a couple of times will dissuade them. If you do allow them to carry your luggage, keep tabs on it and make sure you see it loaded on your bus. $2 per bag is a generous tip for their service.
