By plane: In general, travelers head to Port Antonio after first exploring one of the major Jamaican travel destinations of Kingston (
) or Ocho Rios (
). Travelers flying in to Kingston fly in to the Norman Manley International Airport. Travelers flying in to Ocho Rios fly in to the Donald Sangster Airport. From either location, most travelers opt to rent a car to continue on to Port Antonio.
By car: The Kingston airport is the bigger of the two airports. It is located approximately two hours drive from Port Antonio. Travelers coming through Ocho Rios usually take the scenic, but relatively quick, route along Highway A4. The highways may be in bad condition so visitors are strongly advised to obtain maximum car rental insurance if renting cars in the area.
Travelers who wish to avoid car rental in the area will it possible, although not necessarily preferable, to get a taxi from the airport to Port Antonio.
The distance between Port Antonio and either airport is long enough to make the drive somewhat expensive.
Car rental is almost always the better choice.
Jamaican visitors who are traveling on a budget and who are interested in exploring numerous locations in the area frequently get to Port Antonio by bus.
