This small Caribbean church (aka St. John's Figtree Church) is perhaps best known for its church register, in which is recorded the marriage of Horatio Nelson to Frances Nisbet, as follows:
"1787 March 11th. Horatio Nelson, Esquire. Captain of His Majesty's Ship the Boreas, to Frances Herbert Nisbet, Widow."
The church, St. John's Figtree, is located between the villages of Fig Tree and Church Ground, which are on the main road about two miles east of Charlestown, in the southern part of the island of Nevis. The church was originally built in the 1680s; however the current building dates from 1838. The churchyard has many gravestones dating from the 17th century.
