This Danish fort built between 1752 and 1760 was
the site of the most important event in St. Croix
history. 8,000 slaves marched from
nearby Estate LaGrange to Fort
Fredrik and demanded
their freedom. Standing on the ramparts
on July 3, 1848, Governor Von Scholten gave in to the crowd’s demands. Like Fort
Christiansvaern, Fort Fredrik
was built to protect the island from pirates.
