INTRODUCTION

Generally speaking,  prices at restaurants 'within the city' increase as you move from west to east  -  from the Peninsula de las Playas and Old Acapulco (around and near the city square,  el zócalo) to the comparatively newer sections of the city (the Golden ZoneCosta Azul,  and along the Carretera Escénica).

Most of the following restaurants serve (and cook with) purified water and ice;  but travelers would be well-advised to avoid tap water and ice in some of the city's smaller  'off-the-beaten-path'  local eateries  -  unless one has factual knowledge of an eatery's practices.  Try a classic (local) beverage for a change  -  such as agua de jamaica (made from flowers,  which gives it its ruby-red color and a bit of a tang) or agua de horchata (made from rice,  with a bit of cinnamon and a touch of lime).   If you have an especially sensitive stomach,  avoid undercooked and/or raw foods  -  such as ceviche,  pulpo enamorado,  and sushi.

The following restaurants and local eateries are but a few of the scores of dining establishments spread throughout the city,  some of which rely heavily on tourists  -  and others which primarily attract resident patrons (and a small number of tourists who've taken the time to seek them out).

Information is current as of January / 2010,  but subject to changes and corrections.  Restaurants in Acapulco come and go quite frequently,  from one month to the next  -  and from one trip to the next.  Some close up while new ones open their doors;  some move to a new location while a few may decide to change their names (or adopt a different theme or menu).  The dining scene here is in a constant state of flux,  and travelers should always try to verify their choices prior to arrival.

UPSCALE RESTAURANTS   -   $$$$$

With only one exception,  these top-notch restaurants can be found along the Carretera Escénica (the city's Scenic Highway,  which stretches along the eastern shore of Acapulco Bay) or in Zona Diamante (over the hill,  southeastward,  from the bay area toward Puerto Marqués and the airport).  Many of these establishments offer an al fresco dining experience,  attentive service,  and panoramic views of Acapulco Bay.  As a group,  they are the city's best fine-dining options.

LESS EXPENSIVE AND/OR ECONOMICAL   -   $$ / $

Many of these restaurants and eateries are centrally located along ( or not far from ) the Costera Miguel Alemán,  from one end of the city to the other;  and the majority offer traditional made-from-scratch Mexican fare or specialize in local seafood dishes ( primarily fish or shrimp ).  To find some of them might be a bit of a challenge;  but ask around and a local will undoubtedly point you in the right direction.

Several of these restaurants have been  'discovered'  by foreign tourists and are now fairly popular and well-known.  Others are still hidden gems which are mostly frequented by four groups of people  -  local residents,  veteran travelers who've become familiar with the city,  snowbirds who regularly winter in Acapulco,  and national tourists  'in the know'  who seek out good Mexican fare.   For the most part,  attire is  'very casual'   -   i.e.  shorts,  tee-shirts,  and sandals are usually fine.  In some cases you'll find  'Spanish only'  menus and a staff which speaks and understands a limited amount of English;  but with a bit of patience and a rudimentary grasp of the Spanish language,  most foreign travelers should have no problem communicating their desires.  Expect  'the tab'  at these restaurants to be very reasonable ( sometimes unbelievably low )  -  and at a few of the smaller more-local eateries,  be prepared to pay with   'cash'  ( i.e.  no credit cards ).

In the end,  most  walk away with a bellyful of good food  -  perhaps shaking their heads in disbelief at how inexpensive it was.
