Nose Hill Park is a Natural Environment park that covers  2,784 acres (11,267 hectacres) of mostly grassland, and wasn't protected until the 1980's, in the 1940's development of the park into residential neighbourhoods was planned. There are many hiking paths through the park, from which there are scenic veiws of the city surrounding it, and of the Rocky Mountains to the West. There is a rare fescue grassland ecosystem within the park, which is home to over 100 species of birds and 27 species of mammals.
