In winter the situation on the Icefields Parkway requires even more careful planning. From the middle of October through the middle of April, there are no restaurants, gasoline stations or flush toilets along the Icefields Parkway. According to the Parks Canada Road Reports website, "winter highway maintenance occurs during daytime hours only" and the road is not patrolled by highway crews after 3:30 p.m. If you choose to drive the Icefields Parkway in winter, the winter emergency survival kit that you should have obtained even before you reached Jasper takes on added importance. Be aware that cell phones do not work along much of the Icefields Parkway, and be conscious of how few hours of daylight there are in winter.
