Southampton is one of the safer cities of England. However, all the normal tips apply. It is not recommended to take a walk  through the Common or other parks on ones own after dusk. Mugging and rapes have been reported in those areas. CCTV operates in the main streets of the City Centre and is effective in stopping much crime. One should also be careful walking around the City Centre with regard to tripping up on loose paving slabs. This is a recent problem following some landslide problems a few years ago. In the evenings there are mobile emergency services and some excellent hospitals on hand at any time should any serious accidents occur.
