Hereford is a delightful city with an ancient history, dominated by a beautiful 11th century cathedral and situated along the river Wye.  The cathedral (well worth a visit) has an excellent chained library with many important manuscripts and has been the home of one of the earliest maps, the mappamundi.  A new museum has been built to house the mappamundi and many other historical documents.  The centre of this picturesque city is very attractive, with numerous shops and restaurants.  In recent years an attractive modern development has been built near the old bridge (replacing some dilapidated commercial buildings), the development features a pleasant bar/restaurant with stunning river views and interesting shops.  Hereford may not be an easy destination to reach from London, but the city is a gem and the county of Herefordshire is glorious, with some of the most picturesque villages in Britain.  Music aficionados will also find that every three years Hereford hosts ' The Three Choirs Festival '  - the annual music meeting of the three neighbouring cathedral cities of Hereford, Worcester and Gloucester.
