Travelling to Bath is very easy by train. The main station is Bath Spa, located at the south of the city centre 5-10 minutes walk from the abbey and roman baths. Most trains are operated by First Great Western and the timetable on their site will show all arrivals. Typical arrivals & departures are as such:
Bristol: 4 trains/hour, 15 minutes journey, c. £5.50 standard off-peak return
London: 2 /hour, 1h 20m, £45*
Cardiff: 1-2/hour, 1h, £16*
Southampton/Portsmouth, 1h 30min/2h, £20*
Weymouth, 2hr, £18
Connections are available every half hour through Bristol to the midlands, north east and south west. *Cheaper fares are available by booking in advance on their website above. Railcards qualify off-peak fares for a 33% discount.
Bath is signposted from the M4, A37 & A303, and lies on the A4 and A36 trunk roads. Bath is a very congested city and unless you have a hotel reservation, using the Park & Rides signposted from the North (M4), West (A4-Bristol) and South (A367/A37) is usually much quicker and less stressful than negotiating the notorious one-way system.
As of Dec 2015 Park and Ride siging is poor on some routes, thus hard to find, research this in advance. Car Park sigining is also poor or faulty with Free Space signs indicating many free spaces when there are none, it's best to arrive early to have a chance of getting a space. Some alternative car parking signs lead nowhere, it seems old signs left in place. Use another form of transport if possible, it's easy to waste an hour or two trying to park in the city.
The nearest airport is Bristol International, with Easyjet and Flybe being the principle scheduled operators, linking most major cities of Europe daily. A link to Dubai is being considered by Emirates for the near future.
Bristol International is linked to Bristol Temple Meads railway station every 15 minutes by the Bristol International Flyer coach service, with total travel time from Bath of about 60 minutes.
The London Airports are also possible to get to/from for long-haul travellers, with rail connections taking between 2-4 hours depending on time of day and airport served. Heathrow being the closest. The National Express coach service runs to Heathrow and to London.
