Chinese / Vietnamese
One of the best places here is called cafe soya , in the Arcadian Centre (70 Hurst Street). They also have a new much bigger place opposite the markets (just around the corner). Ask for directions if there isn't room in the original place as it's always very busy! Recommended are the roast pork steamed pancake rolls (3) £3.80 and the Vietnamese meat spring rolls (3). Other great choices are spring rolls with pork, fresh prawns, mung bean vermicelli and bean sprouts, which are crispy deep-fried and served with fruity sweet and sour sauce. £3.50.
Also pay a visit to The Big Wok, in the heart of China Town, around the Arcadian, which is extremely popular both day and night. Between 12noon-5pm they offer an all you can eat buffet, with a choice of over 50 dishes, for only £4.99.
Festival Balti in the Arcadian serves delicious Indian cuisine at reasonable prices
As with any other city in the UK, head to Wetherspoons for cheap pub food.... if you can get a table, that is! It is very busy all day and all evening. If you are around Aston University, head to Sacks of Potatoes which is a small pub on campus that serves surprisingly tasty, and very cheap, pub food. Unlike the Gosta Green pub over the road, you do not need to be a student to eat in Sacks. Many lecturers can be found there, so if you are over 30 you won't be annoyed by too many drunken 20 year old students, either! If you're looking for a traditional pub, check out The Bull in Price Street, B4 6JU, a bit tricky to find and the area is a bit derelict at night, but the pub gives a warm welcome and has very good bar food. www.beerintheevening.com has a helpful review and comments about this pub.
